In 1866, tragedy strikes the exclusive Windfield School when a young student drowns in a mysterious accident. His death and its aftermath initiate a spiraling circle of treachery that will span three decades and entwine many lives. From the exclusive men’s clubs and brothels that cater to every dark desire of London’s upper class to the dazzling ballrooms and mahogany-paneled suites of the manipulators of the world’s wealth, one family is splintered by a shared legacy.

Of it’s time?
Revisado: 04-16-25
Listener, what can say?
For a story about banking, bank success, nor not, intermingled with a family drama, Follett did a-fine job of keeping the reader/listener engaged.
If this book was written today, i hope Follett would approach his women characters and the characters from outside England in a different way. Maybe less like caricatures and stereotypes?
The recording was made in the mid ‘90s and has the quality to available and the narrator’s approach to the craft are very much from that time. For most of the narrative and most characters that’s fine. For some of the characters, including the women, the audio portrayal is regrettable.

Enjoying a summer read in the doldrums of winter
Revisado: 03-15-25
Listener, My first foray into the Nantucket world of Elin Hilderbrand kept me guessing, and so much fun. Every two or three chapters, I second guessed the ending, and kept looking forward to how the Chief would wrap up his last case. Recommend, even if you haven’t read the earlier books in the series.

Historia
Don't call this mermaid "little"—call her "captain," unless you want to walk the plank. Mary is in love with the so-called prince of Charles Town, except he doesn't love her back. Which is inconvenient. Since she's a mermaid, being brokenhearted means she'll—poof!—turn into sea-foam. But instead, Mary finds herself pulled out of the sea and up onto a pirate ship. To survive, she joins them.

Historia
Fourteen-year-old Mona isn't like the wizards charged with defending the city. She can't control lightning or speak to water. Her familiar is a sourdough starter, and her magic only works on bread. She has a comfortable life in her aunt's bakery making gingerbread men dance. But Mona's life is turned upside down when she finds a dead body on the bakery floor. An assassin is stalking the streets of Mona's city, preying on magic folk, and it appears that Mona is his next target. And in an embattled city suddenly bereft of wizards, the assassin may be the least of Mona's worries.

Baking... while baking
Revisado: 12-15-24
Listener, What a fun read during the holidays! Not actually a holiday story, but with it's fun to have a book with baking and hijinks while I'm, well... baking!
Patricia Santomasso's narration is perfectly balanced with hints of character, while not overpowering the storyline.

Historia
You are born to a king, but marry a tyrant. You stand helplessly as he sacrifices your child to placate the gods. You watch him wage war on a foreign shore and you comfort yourself with violent thoughts of your own. You play the part, fooling enemies who deny you justice. And slowly, you plot. But when your husband returns in triumph, what then? Acceptance or vengeance—death follows both. So you bide your time and force the gods' hands in a wretched game of vengeance.

Clytemnestra
Revisado: 12-15-24
Listener, I've been on a Greek heroines kick for a while, and thought that this book would be run-of-the-expected. I was wrong, and happily! It was fantastic!
The narration was spot-on. There was nuance and differentiation, but without over- doing the the dramatics. Olivia Vinall let the story carry the drama and she gave Clytemnestra a voice that transcended the page.
Constanza Casati wove a perfect story for Clytemnestra, giving us glimpses to the beats of her life, how her relationships would have grown and changed as she aged, and subtle insights to the choices she would have made.
By chance, I'm listening to Pat Barker's The Voyage Home right after this, and noticing how these two authors view Clytemnestra, sometimes similarly and sometimes vastly differently. It's fun and fascinating!

When Everleigh Dangerfield’s baking disaster necessitates a call to 911, firefighter Griffin Brantley douses the flames in the kitchen, but the ones he stokes in Everleigh are an entirely different story. Unfortunately, Everleigh’s only visiting and doesn’t do casual hookups, no matter how smoldering the temptation. But Everleigh’s holiday mishaps have just begun. And Griffin is seemingly always on call. If Everleigh is game for a change of plans, he can give her the merriest Christmas of her life.

Frustrating and borderline offensive
Revisado: 11-30-24
Listener, I get it that holiday and especially Christmas romcoms are formulaic, but this book was too much. The ‘friendly’ retired neighbors weren’t cute when berating the main character about her single-hood - how ‘could’ a single woman live in a SFH alone(!) let alone an apartment (!gasp!) alone. No, this isn’t set in 1950, but today. It goes on this and finally I could not finish. DNF. 😔

Ashley Perrin is fresh out of college and starting a job as a community liaison for the Third District–the city’s only sector with more alien residents than humans. Ashley’s barely found where the paper clips are kept when she’s beset with constituent complaints–from too much noise at the Annual Lupidian Celebration Parade to a trip-and-fall chicken to a very particular type of alien hornet that threatens the very city itself. And if that’s not terrifying enough, Ashley is next up at the office karaoke night.

Sweet
Revisado: 01-25-24
Sweet. The Narrator gave everyone their own voice, with just enough whimsy to match the story. The multiple POVs gave just enough zaniness to match the many (sometimes delightfully corny, sometimes laugh-out-loud) references to other stories. I especially enjoyed the Princess Bride nods.
Listener, try this one!
