Lovely and introspective biography
Revisado: 04-20-25
Written by her son, but told with both an insiders perspective and a view towards finding the true humanity of a woman without borders. Lee Miller was a creature of her time, but also a woman on a mission, setting about to tackle the world and escape her personal demons in the process. Beautifully narrated, and wonderfully written. Highly recommend.

Historia
One of history’s most iconic figures, Cleopatra is rightly remembered as a clever and charismatic ruler. But few today realize that she was the last in a long line of Egyptian queens who bore that name. In The Cleopatras, historian Lloyd Llewellyn-Jones tells the dramatic story of these seven incomparable women, vividly recapturing the lost world of Hellenistic Egypt and tracing the kingdom’s final centuries before its fall to Rome.

Revisado: 04-05-25
Wonderfully narrated by the author and reads like a soap opera of the finest levels of chaos. I had a professor tell me once, there were many more Cleopatras far more attesting than Cleopatra VII (THAT Cleopatra) and boy was he correct. Absolutely riveting in terms of bringing depth and humanity to this colorful dynasty. Highly recommend!

Historia
The voyage of the Mayflower and the founding of Plymouth Colony is one of the seminal events in world history. But the poorly equipped group of English Puritans who ventured across the Atlantic in the early autumn of 1620 had no sense they would pass into legend. They had 80 casks of butter and two dogs but no cattle for milk, meat, or ploughing. They were ill prepared for the brutal journey and the new land that few of them could comprehend.

The American Revolution was a naval war of immense scope and variety, including no less than 22 navies fighting on five oceans - to say nothing of rivers and lakes. In no other war were so many large-scale fleet battles fought, one of which was the most strategically significant naval battle in all of British, French, and American history.

Revisado: 02-16-25
It’s an eye opening experience to understand how significant the naval war of the American Revolution really was. There was so much information that explained the world theater that encompassed the full scope of what the Revolution meant internationally. The naval power that flexed and waned during these years was confiscating to learn more at depth. Wonderfully narrated and beautifully written.

Wonderful story of Naval history
Revisado: 02-14-25
This book was wonderfully narrated and beautifully written. I’ve gone through quite a few naval books regarding the Royal Navy in the years covered in this book and I learned so much more from the little tidbits divulged, that listening was an even more interesting diversion than usual. Highly recommend for anyone interested in the sweeping narrative of the English and successive empirical naval development of the largest world power to ever rule the seas.

Historia
From the plains of ancient Mesopotamia to the rolling hills of medieval England to the vast sheep farms of modern-day Australia, sheep have been central to the human story. Starting with our Neolithic ancestors' first forays into sheep-rearing nearly 10,000 years ago, these remarkable animals have fed us, clothed us, changed our diet and languages, helped us to win wars, decorated our homes and financed the conquest of large swathes of the earth.

This was a really fun book to listen to. Told with respect and appreciation to the Mongol culture. Going through the lineage of Genghis Khan in the female line this story is a wonderful genealogy of a group of women that were constantly shuffled to the background by successive historians and scholars but have risen to be heard in spite of them. So glad I listened and the narrator gives a good accounting too. Just plain enjoyable.

Defending Heaven brings together, for the first time in one volume, a complete history of the Jin, Song, and Ming dynasties' wars fought against the Mongols. Lasting nearly two centuries, these wars, fought to defend Chinese civilization against a brutal and unrelenting foe, pitted personal heroics against the inexorable Mongol war machine and involved every part of the Chinese state.

So informative and beautifully constructed narrative.
Revisado: 01-27-25
This was a wonderful history of a tumultuous period in Chinese history. It’s amazing to realize how technologically forward these cultures were in comparison to their western counterparts. The battles were wonderfully detailed, not so militantly descriptive but in such a way that you felt the terror of the victims and the absolute conquest of the victors. The ins and outs of the imperial courts were a bit hard to follow, but that was just because of the similarity in the key figures names. So my own issue, not the narrator or writing. Beautifully narrated! Highly recommend for those interested in East Asian histories!
