NARRATOR HELL
Revisado: 05-09-18
I could only listen for a few minutes before deleting this whole series. The narration is TERRIBLE... so terrible that it spoiled the story for me from the 1st sentence. I have no idea if I would have enjoyed the story if it had a decent narrator. I'll be returning the set!
Peace out...

Emily B. ...HORRIBLE narrator.
Revisado: 02-04-18
OMGoddess! This Emily chick is one of the worst narrators... well... ever. Frankly, I don't know if the story is good or not; after only the 1st chapter, I deleted the book. Will be returning both Book 1 & 2 since she narrates both... AND I will make sure I have NO more books read by her! I almost never write bad reviews; I buy many books from Audible, and rarely find any that I really dislike. I love most genres and writing styles, and can usually tolerate a poor narrator if the writer is good. However, this chick is such a horrible narrator that I HAD to say domething. I'm sorry that I won't get to find out if I like the author or not. It's too bad... it looked like a fun horror series. Also, I don't mind the cussing (as mentioned in the review) if it's relevant to the nature of the character. (I learned to cuss at an early age at the knee of an alcoholic former WWII sailor dad, so nothing much shocks me!) If the author gets another narrator to reread these books, I MAY try them again.
Peace out!

Historia
At the age of 22, Jennifer Worth left her comfortable home to move into a convent and become a midwife in postwar London’s East End slums. The colorful characters she met while delivering babies all over London - from the plucky, warm-hearted nuns with whom she lived to the woman with 24 children who couldn't speak English to the prostitutes and dockers of the city’s seedier side - illuminate a fascinating time in history.

Revisado: 04-03-17
Like the PBS series of yester-year... the series spawned by this book... Worth's writings are lovely, thoughtful, and true-to-life, showing a great understanding of human nature and of the human condition. Though I don't share her particular brand of religion, I was touched by the honesty of her own personal convictions.

Bwaaaaah- hah-hah-hah-hah!!!!!
Revisado: 02-22-17
Love the Twilight Zone. In fact I have a large collection of the original TV series on tape (along with a collection of the original TV series Star Trek). What a trip it was to hear one made for radio. I'll be checking out more of this series. It's a fun... but creepy... trip back in time. They play the old original music when it starts... remember that creepy tune? Scared the crap out of my old companion bird, Petrie, when I played it. He jumped out of his open cage where he had just finished eating his breakfast and shrieked for Mama (me) to come get him. He was fine when I put him on my ahoulder, though he did climb up to the back of my chair to shriek a few more times before the story was done! We both thought it was creepy... but I enjoyed it more than Petrie!

Historia
Folksy and fresh, endearing and affecting, Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe is the now-classic novel of two women in the 1980s; of gray-headed Mrs. Threadgoode telling her life story to Evelyn, who is in the sad slump of middle age. The tale she tells is also of two women - of the irrepressibly daredevilish tomboy Idgie and her friend Rut - -who back in the thirties ran a little place in Whistle Stop, Alabama, a Southern kind of Cafe Wobegon offering good barbecue and good coffee and all kinds of love and laughter, even an occasional murder.

As good as it gets...
Revisado: 02-22-17
Here's one of the best writers of our times. Though I have this book on my shelf & have read and re-read it, I loved re-re-reading (listening this time because of eye problems) it again. Such a moving story... but not one that has you in tears throughout because of the sly humor of the author and her characters. BTW, the narrator was a knockout. She did an awesome job of changing voices in a rapid-fire manner that really enhanced the story. She and the author made a great team. Anyone who loves a good novel should genuinely love this story.

Asimov Story Good; Narration/Sound Effects Bad.
Revisado: 02-21-17
I always love Asimov's sci-fi. What more can be said about his genius as a writer... it's all been said before. However, the narration was very hard to follow much of the time due to the VERY ANNOYING, GRATING soumd effects. If the producer would just not have the actor's speak during all that terrible background noise, it would resolve this problem. Even if the producer did follow my suggestion, I could still do with MUCH LESS of those grating noises... such as the (supposed) noise of computers & of Magnifico's (so-called) musical instrument. The sound effects/background noise just plain got on my NERVES! (Isaac, if your spirit is still hanging around watching over your faithful readers & general sci-fi junkies, I still love ya Babe!!! I'll continue to read, re-read, re-re-read/re-re-listen to your awesome sci-fi till I die & give up the ghost! You are awesome, Dude!!!)

Re-Read Worthy
Revisado: 02-13-17
I've been a fan of Asimov, literally, for decades... ever since I was reading adult-level sci-fi novels waaaaay back in my gradeschool years. I love his novels now, even more. I reread his works again in my 20's & 30's, & I am now re-re-reading them in my 60's. (It is a personal project of mine to read the authors/books one more time that I have so enjoyed throughout my life... interspersed with newer/current authors/books that I find interesting now.) If you are a fan of sci-fi, I strongly recommend this & all other novels by Isaac Asimov. His books were amazing when 1st printed (this one was printed in 1950, I think), & I believe they are just as amazing and CURRENT today!

Fun & Fast
Revisado: 02-08-17
This was a fun, fast-paced, old-fashioned, detective noir... touched up with some exciting new-wave magic to spice it up. I plan to read more of this series, a longer book next time. Book noir is as spicy as film noir... Only one thing I did not care for: the hero's "American" accent was too goofy for me, and the "foreign" accents were just a bit silly, too. However, the plot was interesting enough that I'll try another book from this series.

George Orwell depicts a gray, totalitarian world dominated by Big Brother and its vast network of agents, including the Thought Police - a world in which news is manufactured according to the authorities' will and people live tepid lives by rote. Winston Smith, a hero with no heroic qualities, longs only for truth and decency. But living in a social system in which privacy does not exist and where those with unorthodox ideas are brainwashed or put to death, he knows there is no hope for him.

OMGoddess!
Revisado: 02-08-17
I haven't read this in years, but decided to read/listen to it again because of all the hoopla about it in the news...as related to the Trump the (Not My President) Rump administration. If you've never read 1984, perhaps this is a good time for it's ominous warning to all citizens who value freedom... physical, political, &... Oh My Goddess... especially spiritual!!! If we don't guard ourselves against religious persecution NOW, The Burning will begin again!!!
Don't forget about reading The Handmaid's Tale, too. I have it downloaded to read it yet again, as well. It's in the news as.related to The Rump, too.

Historia
Shiva, 'the destroyer' among the Hindu trinity (of gods), is depicted in many contradictory manners. He is an ascetic who wears animal skin, his body smeared with ashes. Contradictory to his wild nature, he is also depicted as having a family, with a beautiful wife and two children. There are many more such varied representations of Shiva, the most prominent of these being the Linga and the Nataraja. The author, Devdutt Pattanaik, introduces the readers to these varied aspects and representations.

Will Repeat...
Revisado: 12-08-16
Fascinating AND informative! So full of wisdom from Hindu spirituality, that I will keep it in my Library to experience it again and again. Though my primary spirituality is Wicca, I also incorporate the wisdom and practices of many other belief systems into my own spiritual studies and practices...and Hinduism is one of those beliefs that I have honored for decades. The narrator's lovely voice is the icing on the cake of a narrative I found to be both informative and fascinating...two valuable qualities that do not always go hand-in-hand. This is one text that raptly keeps my attention and that will not put me to sleep...no matter how many times I repeat.
