No bond is more sacred than the one between a mother and child. And no figure is more sympathetic than a mother whose child faces a life-threatening illness. But what if the mother is the reason for the illness? What if the sympathy is the point? With help from some of the top MBP experts in the world, Dunlop and Weber uncover the complex maze of psychological, systemic, and cultural issues that compound MBP and offer solutions for how we might find our way out.

Good enough, but not more than the free podcast

A decent view of modern medical child abuse, but pretty much an add free paid version of Dunlops podcast. I wouldn’t suggest purchasing

Historia
An unforgettable spiritual autobiography about a search for meaning that begins alongside one of the great religious icons of our time and ends with a return to the secular world. At seventeen, Mary Johnson saw Mother Teresa’s face on the cover of Time and experienced her calling. Eighteen months later, she entered a convent in the South Bronx to begin her religious training. Not without difficulty, this bright, independent-minded Texas teenager eventually adapted to the sisters’ austere life of poverty and devotion, and in time became close to Mother Teresa herself.

Middle ok
Revisado: 11-15-24
Interesting while also being quite frustrating with the ever increasing “humble brags” that accumulated over the many instances of blaming others while “taking responsibility” for poor behavior. Of course she was the best teacher, the only one sisters could trust, the only true moral compass to be seen. It was clear the author felt she had something to prove and to counter the stigma of leaving a vocation. It just felt disingenuous. Book could have been great without all that clouding it

Historia
Derek Martell finds himself on a contract job in Iraq when the newly formed Islamic Caliphate unleashes a genetic weapon - to devastating effect. Eighty percent of the non-Arab global population is wiped out overnight. As Derek and his crew struggle to escape the Middle East ahead of an expected nuclear counterstrike, questions plague him. Why are military personnel seemingly unaffected? How far-reaching is the weapon? And is there still a United States to return to?

So asinine and clearly Islamophobic, narrow and dull, in no way worth the time. I wish i could get mine back

Historia
The Psychopath Test is a fascinating journey through the minds of madness. Jon Ronson's exploration of a potential hoax being played on the world's top neurologists takes him, unexpectedly, into the heart of the madness industry. An influential psychologist who is convinced that many important CEOs and politicians are, in fact, psychopaths teaches Ronson how to spot these high-flying individuals by looking out for little telltale verbal and nonverbal clues. And so Ronson, armed with his new psychopath-spotting abilities, enters the corridors of power.

Good read
Revisado: 06-28-23
Overall really enjoyed this. I don’t read as often as i should or have in the past so I’ll say it’s significant that i finished this. My background As a social worker likely made it more interesting than the other reviewer who was bored, but I’m used to the tedious language of the field and appreciated the accessible and interesting nature of the stories and appreciated the deviation from the norm of the one sharing information taking the role of “blank slate” fallacy. The author is human and honest. Nothing is perfect, but i do hope the author is proud of this work

Historia
From across the Hudson River in New Jersey, residents witnessed the events of 9/11 as they were on the school run or morning commute. For Karina Vigo and her fellow students from Kearny High School in Kearny, NJ, they saw it unfold from their classroom window before teachers intervened and pulled down the blinds. Reliving the day, she reveals a loss of innocence from 9/11 as students didn't understand what was happening in the city just across the water where they would visit when cutting school. This is her story, told in her words.

Go for it
Revisado: 06-17-23
Very interesting stories that are decently nuanced, thoughtful. I thought the sound design was odd, the choice to add staged coughing or background subs weren’t integrated cleanly enough to be successful, didn’t melt enough into everything to enhance it. It felt a bit jarring. But i did appreciate the commitment to let people take full control over their experiences and not really doing other talking or narrating. And i do wish there were more episodes. Thank you!
