Historia
If Joe and Vicky had known what relocating to a tiny mountain village in Andalucía would really be like, they might have hesitated. They can have no idea of the culture shock in store for them...no idea they'll become reluctant chicken farmers and own the most dangerous cockerel in Spain...no idea they'll help capture a vulture and be rescued by a mule. Will they stay, or will they return to the relative sanity of England?

Funniest book

This is one of the funniest book I have EVER read or listened to. The author is so colorful with the way she strings phrases together and describes everything. I laughed out loud till I cried!

I can’t stop listening. And Simon Prebble is one of the best narrators ever!! He IS the character. The emotions, the flow, he captures it all perfectly. If I could give this book more stars I would.

Historia
Sid Halley’s career as a jockey—and his marriage—were brought to a sudden end by a heartbreaking accident. His glory days are over, but now, as a private investigator, he still finds a certain satisfaction in successfully solving a case. His latest one, though, could prove to be his undoing. Rosemary Casper, wife of an elite racehorse trainer, has begged for his help in figuring out why her husband’s most promising horses have been performing so poorly. Halley thinks she’s overreacting at first. Then hints of deceit and brutal danger make him think twice.

Dick Francis is always excellent
Revisado: 08-09-24
I read most of Dick Francis’s books in the 1990’s and loved them. I’ve just now started listening to them and they are as good-or better- the second time around! You don’t have to be a horse lover to love his books- but it does make it great for those of us who do live and love horses.

Historia
When the enslaved Jim overhears that he is about to be sold to a man in New Orleans, separated from his wife and daughter forever, he decides to hide on nearby Jackson Island until he can formulate a plan. Meanwhile, Huck Finn has faked his own death to escape his violent father, recently returned to town. As all readers of American literature know, thus begins the dangerous and transcendent journey by raft down the Mississippi River toward the elusive and too-often-unreliable promise of the Free States and beyond.

Divisive
Revisado: 07-27-24
Interesting premise, excellent narration. I love Huck Finn, and this book wove in a lot of that plot from Jim’s perspective. But in here all whites are bad and have no conscience. Only Huck was a descent white, but even that is a twist in the plot. This just stokes the fire of racism— both black’s and white’s—and we don’t need more hate and division in this country.

Historia
In 1943, as the war against Nazi Germany raged abroad, President Franklin Roosevelt had a critical goal: a face-to-face sit-down with his allies Joseph Stalin and Winston Churchill. This first-ever meeting of the Big Three in Tehran, Iran, would decide some of the most crucial strategic details of the war. Yet when the Nazis found out about the meeting, their own secret plan took shape—an assassination plot that would’ve changed history.

So much I didn’t know!
Revisado: 07-20-24
I am an avid reader / listener of WWII books, both historical fiction and nonfiction. But Brad Meltzer shed light on the sheer numbers who died in that war. I had no idea! He says that Americans and English always tout their own parts in the war, which of course were significant, but the number of Soviets who died to stop Hitler was simply staggering and unimaginable. And the loss of innocent non-combatants is so hard to wrap one’s mind around.
Brad Meltzer has impressed me again. He’s always so great! And Scott Brick is one of the best narrators in the business.
Loved this book!

Not as good as previous novels
Revisado: 06-06-24
I am a huge Follett fan. I’ve enjoyed reading many of his novels in the past. I love the history melded with fictional characters to make me feel like I’m THERE in history. I always learn so much while being entertained! And the narrator is great!
Therefore, I was a bit disappointed in this novel. It did cover an era in time I’m not familiar with—the years leading up to the Napoleonic wars. Very interesting. But so much of the novel was steeped in politics, with liberal socialism portrayed as the loving benevolence of selfless philanthropists and the clergy and business entrepreneurs as evil capitalists and hypocrites.
Granted not all characters fit into those stereotypes; some were a mix of both. But as with many of Follett’s books, the rich are evil rapists and users, and the poor are generous and hard working. I don’t think mankind throughout all the centuries that Follett’s books cover, can be so easily categorized. There is good and bad in ALL walks of life, users, hypocrites, and saints in every societal group.
Follett’s previous books, I believe, allowed for these differences. But this novel, not so much.

I’m hooked!
Revisado: 05-24-24
I am now absolutely hooked on Jack Dempsey novels. I started with one of Audible’s freebies and loved it and now am purchasing them all! The authors are real pros, both in writing and context! I am riveted from start to finish and can’t wait to start the next one!
I haven’t tried the authors’ other series yet, but I sure plan to, once I’m caught all up on the Dempsey/Ember novels.
And the scariest thing is that it’s all WAYYYY too real.
