Drawn out. More for the 20 y/o crowd.

I struggled for this book to be over. Good but too drawn out. I would recommend for a younger set. Like an adult fairy tale.

I am a Mary Monroe fan but
Revisado: 05-07-23
This was the worst. Narration was beyond horrible. Both Hubert and Jesse sounded as if something was wrong with them. Story line was very long and drawn out and then in the end after Hubert’s confession of infidelity and Jesse although a wee bit upset basically dismissed it. Totally unreal. I asked myself whether the narrators changed their voices to read this book as it was so bad. Please, no sequel to this because it can’t get much worst. Total disappointment.

Historia
In 1969 Dixie Dupree is 11 years old and already an expert liar. Sometimes the lies are for her mama Evie's sake - to explain away a bruise brought on by her quick-as-lightning temper. And sometimes the lies are to spite Evie, who longs to leave her unhappy marriage in Perry County, Alabama, and return to her beloved New Hampshire. But for Dixie and her brother, Alabama is home, a place of pine-scented breezes and hot, languid afternoons.

A hard listen. Unrealistic
Revisado: 03-24-23
This book was hard to listen to. Too unrealistic considering the main character is an 11 year old that was too grown for her years. Her vocabulary was also too grown for her years. I did not feel sorry for her plight. She needed something to shut her up since her mother would not give her the back of her hand across her mouth. Also a mother being raped by her brother, bearing her brother’s son yet allowing that same brother now a man to come and live with her and her daughter. Unbelievable.

Story line is good
Revisado: 12-07-21
As it involves 2 females fighting over one guy but the narration is horrible. So many times I struggled to continue. Everyone sounds so fake except Nina. Cat, William and Mat are hard to take. I will listen to another by this author if the people reading it are different.

The only other author that I enjoyed this much is MARY MONROE. The story and narration were both on point. I am sad to see that this author has no other books. This was really great.

Story was good but
Revisado: 07-02-21
I cringed as the narration to me was so bad. Opal is a few days away from 18 yet the narrator made her sound like a 10 year old. She sounded so very young and her actions and responses were so immature. I could not wait for the book to be over. Even the last few chapters, I could not wait for Opal to either grow up or the story to just be over. It needed a more mature sounding narrator as the subject matter is mature.

Disappointing....I have now listened to the series
Revisado: 04-22-21
Narration was awful. Lola and Joan were too old to be so stupid and naive. I continued to listen because of Calvin. Both ladies were in their thirties and acted like girls in there late teens. Sylvia was also unbearable to listen to. Then they are sound so “country” although the book try’s to paint a picture of some fairly well-to-do people. Have listened to many of Monroe’s books but this series was a let down. Ms. Wiggins was very good.

Enjoyable enough to listen to all 3 books again
Revisado: 12-05-20
I listened to book 1 a while back before the sequels were written. Got tired of waiting for book 2 so I listened to many other books. It was just recently when I needed another good listen that I stumbled back across book 1 and did some research to see if book 2 was out yet just to find not only book 2 but a third book. There was a questionable review for book 2 on this site so I did not get it but got book 3 instead. I thoroughly enjoyed book 3 to the point that I went back and got book 2.
Now after listening to book 1 then book 3 then book 2 in that order, I am going back to listen to book 3 again. I enjoyed them all......Odell was a dog! Very Good!!
