Historia
Former spy Maggie Bird came to the seaside village of Purity, Maine, eager to put the past behind her after a mission went tragically wrong. These days, she’s living quietly on her chicken farm, still wary of blowback from the events that forced her early retirement. But when a body turns up in Maggie’s driveway, she knows it’s a message from former foes who haven’t forgotten her. Maggie turns to her local circle of old friends—all retirees from the CIA—to help uncover the truth about who is trying to kill her, and why.

Great, complex plot and characters. And I appreciated the ages of the “stars”! I hope there is a sequel.

Historia
Iceland, 1956. Fourteen-year-old Lára decides to spend the summer working for a couple on the small island of Videy, just off the coast of Reykjavík. In early August, the girl disappears without a trace. Time passes, and the mystery becomes Iceland‘s most infamous unsolved case. What happened to the young girl? Is she still alive? Did she leave the island, or did something happen to her there? Thirty years later, as the city of Reykjavík celebrates its 200th anniversary, journalist Valur Robertsson begins his own investigation into Lára's case.

Historia
When a years-long case against a powerful mobster finally cracks and an unimpeachable witness takes the stand, federal prosecutor Nora Carleton is looking forward to putting the defendant away for good. The mobster, though, has other plans. As the witness's testimony concludes, a note is passed to the prosecution offering up information into the assassination of a disgraced former New York governor, murdered in his penthouse apartment just days before. It's enough to blow the case wide open, and to send Nora into a high-stakes investigation of conspiracy, corruption, and danger.

Great story, but he needs a new narrator
Revisado: 06-20-24
The story kept me engaged and intrigued. Well done! But I hated that Nora’s voice, which as portrayed by the narrator (in both this and Comey’s second book), was so whiny. There’s another book I listened to several years ago that suffered from the same problem. Why take a competent and powerful woman and turn her into a wimp?! Please consider a new narrator who has a higher vision for her.

In the summer of 1994, a workman at the historic mansion of railroad baron James J. Hill in St. Paul, Minnesota, stumbles on a long-hidden wall safe. When experts arrive to open the safe and examine its contents, they make an astonishing discovery. There, inside, is a handwritten manuscript bearing the signature of John H. Watson, MD. The manuscript contains the story of how Sherlock Holmes and Watson traveled to Minnesota to track a murderous arsonist - known only as the Red Demon - who is threatening both Hill and his Great Northern Railway.

Historia
When Dr. Philip Taiwo is called on by a powerful Nigerian politician to investigate the torture and murder of three university students in Port Harcourt, he has no idea that he’s about to be enveloped by a perilous case that is far from cold. Philip is not a detective. He’s an investigative psychologist, an academic more interested in figuring out the why of a crime than actually solving it. But when he steps off the plane and into the frenzy of the provincial airport, he soon realizes that the murder of the Okriki Three isn't as straightforward as he thought.

Highly recommend this book!
Revisado: 02-21-22
I enjoyed this book, a real departure from my usual British mysteries. With that said, in spite of some cultural differences, which were interesting, I found the plot intriguing. It kept me engaged until the conclusion and looking forward to the next book by this author. In the meantime, I’m planning to do some research on Nigeria so I’m more able to picture scenes in the book. Thanks!

Want the facts about the U.S.’s healthcare system? Read this!
Revisado: 12-02-21
First of all thank you, Thom Hartmann, for so clearly spelling out the truth of our “healthcare” system. I’m just afraid that the people who need to read/listen to this won’t. But lucky me: I’ve had the benefit of Mr. Hartman’s research and will share it with my friends, including a number of retired docs.
It gets nauseating listening to the AMA, insurance companies, and their lackeys in Congress bleat about the U.S. having the best medical system in the world every time there is a suggestion that it be spread to everyone. Oh, horrors! It might mean the dreaded socialism (has it ever occurred to anyone that our military is the world’s largest socialist organization???) is taking over our (selfish) country.
Just think: Insurance company executives deprived of their $23 million dream homes (that Thom reveals), or doctors retiring to gated communities. Sadly, their comfort comes at our expense. What you say? They’re supposed to be the protectors of human life. Well, the joke’s on us.
This is clearly laid out in Hartmann’s book. Please read it! Get the education that the “powers that be” would prefer you not have.

Sweet story, mediocre narration
Revisado: 11-25-21
The story felt contrived, but the message made it worth the listen. Which brings me to the narration. This narrator needs some training. She never did manage an English accent. Most importantly, the young women all sound the same, and to make it worse they all sound like wimps. Admittedly, Lil and Fiona were at the mercy of self-centered, manipulative “Freddy,” so perhaps sounding like wimps was appropriate. But it was also sad. They were both emotional captives of the man. I was glad when Fiona more or less broke away and stood her ground.
In closing, for future books, please find a new narrator. It’s important for accurately conveying the story.

Historia
The Reckoning will examine America’s national trauma, rooted in our history but dramatically exacerbated by the impact of current events and the Trump administration’s corrupt and immoral policies. Our failure to acknowledge this trauma, let alone root it out, has allowed it to metastasize. Whether it manifests itself in rising levels of rage and hatred, or hopelessness and apathy, the stress of living in a country we no longer recognize has affected all of us. America is suffering from PTSD - a new leader alone cannot fix us.

A very important book
Revisado: 09-04-21
My husband and I listened to “The Reckoning” in the car as we drove around our area on errands, etc. We found ourselves creating trips so we could continue listening, perhaps not a good idea given climate change, but we drive a hybrid and since the material was so compelling decided to carry on.
Mary Trump obviously got all the brains in that shallow and vacuous family. The research that she put into “The Reckoning” is impressive. But the way she wove the tragic treatment of the Native Americans and African slaves, from our beginning to present day, and was able to tie in the horrors that “Donald” visited on us, was nothing short of amazing.
Dr. Trump’s words opened our eyes and helped us to understand more clearly how deeply affected and traumatized Native & African Americans are to this day, from what they suffered at the hands of their white conquerors and enslavers and Jim Crow practitioners, and how racism is still an insidious force in everyone (yes, all of us!) in this country. We now understand more clearly how white people bear the responsibility of understanding how the actions of our ancestors shaped the tragic conditions of our fellow citizens today, and bear responsibility for working to bring true democracy and equality to everyone in this country.
As far as Donald, the damage he did to race relations in the United States may take years to fully comprehend and mitigate. This book is also a powerful effort to shed light on and right his wrongs and redirect the course of our democracy to truly make the U.S. a country for all.
Thank you, Dr. Trump, for your powerful message.
