Historia
No electricity, no family, no connection to the outside world. For eight years, Cooper and his young daughter, Finch, have lived in isolation in a remote cabin in the northern Appalachian woods. And that's exactly the way Cooper wants it, because he's got a lot to hide. Finch has been raised on the books filling the cabin’s shelves and the beautiful but brutal code of life in the wilderness. But she’s starting to push back against the sheltered life Cooper has created for her - and he’s still haunted by the painful truth of what it took to get them there.

Beautiful story that will stay with you
Revisado: 06-08-24
I had no idea what to expect going into this novel, but what a wonderful treat it was. Intense at times, poignant and thought provoking at others. Captivating characters. I will be following this author closely. This was an amazing book, and one I will be recommending highly to friends and family.

Encouraging read
Revisado: 12-29-22
This book is great for making decisions on time management. The author helps you come up.with questions to ask yourself before committing your time to something. I am often bad about saying yes to everything, so this was a helpful exercise. There are a lot of great points in this book and it really helped me work through my priorities.

Historia
When the great red star Calamity appeared in the sky, some believed the end had come. They were right. Calamity created the Epics: humans with incredible powers they didn't deserve. They could have saved mankind. They could have lifted us into harmony and prosperity. Instead they burned. They slaughtered. They conquered. And then they ruled. Jax has learned all of this the hard way. Orphaned at an early age, he's spent most of his childhood training to be a Reckoner - determined to find the Epics' weaknesses, unlock their secrets, and protect those of us who are still left.

Could have really used a military consultant. I loved the Reckoners series but this just didn’t capture the same magic.

Not terribly exciting
Revisado: 04-04-20
I really had to force myself to finish this one. None of the characters were very interesting, and the murder mystery was lackluster as well. The narration was fairly well done. I just didn't enjoy this book very much.
There was a small amount of profanity in this book, but otherwise it was fairly clean.
I might try another Grimes book in the future, but it will have to hook me from the beginning.

My parents told me how crowded the world used to be, before all the people went away. But we were never lonely on our remote island. We had each other and our dogs. Then the thief came.

Disdainful of religion
Revisado: 02-09-20
The author clearly feels disdain for religion (especially Christianity) that comes through clearly throughout the book. Here are some examples: "We had no time for gods where I grew up. It had passed. They had passed... Gods are just stories... Stories to make sense of lives of someone who wanted someone else to take charge of them rather than cut their own way."
So if you are religious or have respect (not condescension) for those who are; you might be better off skipping this one.
Aside from the patronizing way religion is discussed, the book was just downright boring. There are a few parts that were a little suspenseful, but mostly, it's a lot of tedious inner dialogue. The character building was seriously lacking. I really couldn't find myself caring for the protagonist. I was also really disappointed in the relationship between the boy and his dog. It just wasn't portrayed in a deep/meaningful way.
I regret wasting a credit on this one. I definitely won't be reading anything else by this author.

I am thoroughly enjoying this series. Excellent characterization and plot development. You really come to care deeply about the characters. At times it is hard to stop listening, even when you need to do other things. Kate Rudd is a fantastic narrator. Can't wait to start book 4.

Beautiful, clean romance novel
Revisado: 01-07-19
Harmon is such a talented storyteller. She creates dynamic characters that you truly care about, and she weaves together intricate, page turning plotlines. I have read several of her books, and this was one of my favorites. Other than a few minor curses, this was a very clean romance novel. That's hard to find these days, so it makes me appreciate this novel even more. The narration was excellent as well.

very engaging read
Revisado: 10-23-18
I enjoyed the dual stories of Sierra and Mary Katherine. They were both strong women who made mistakes, but learned from them. They loved fiercely, and you quickly come to care about them and their relationships. I always enjoy Francine Rivers, and this book was no exception.
I thought the narrator did a good job as well.

Knowledge is power. That would be the motto of Lander University, had it not been snatched up and used to death by others long before the school was founded. For while Lander offers a full range of courses to nearly all students, it also offers a small number of specialty classes to a very select few. Lander is home to the Hero Certification Program, a curriculum designed to develop students with superhuman capabilities, commonly known as Supers, into official Heroes.

Not Family Friendly
Revisado: 08-20-18
I had high hopes for this book. The summary sounded fun.and interesting. Once I started reading, I was disappointed by the cursing. The kids (main characters) used most of the curse words you can think of, including the f word. There were also sexual situations involved (think college style promiscuity). The characters and story line just didn't pull me in like I had hoped. By chapter 19, I was looking to see how many chapters were left. When I saw there were over 100, I was not happy. That's how you know a good book...if you are excited to see you still have a lot of chapters left. With this one, I groaned.
I am always on the lookout for family friendly titles I can listen to with my children. This one did not fit the bill. And unfortunately, it didn't work for me. Too slow and I just didn't care about the characters.
