Historia
In this pathbreaking work, now with a new introduction, Edward S. Herman and Noam Chomsky show that, contrary to the usual image of the news media as cantankerous, obstinate, and ubiquitous in their search for truth and defense of justice, in their actual practice they defend the economic, social, and political agendas of the privileged groups that dominate domestic society, the state, and the global order.

Historia
In the early morning of June 1, 1921, a White mob marched across the train tracks in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and into its predominantly Black Greenwood District - a thriving, affluent neighborhood known as America's Black Wall Street. They brought with them firearms, gasoline, and explosives. In a few short hours, they'd razed 35 square blocks to the ground, leaving hundreds dead. The Tulsa Race Massacre is one of the most devastating acts of racial violence in US history. But how did it come to pass?

Historia
John Turner, a young man with a chequered past, has been told he has just one year to live. He decides to use his remaining time to search of three very different men he met briefly during the war: a snobbish British pilot, a young corporal accused of murder, and a black G.I. accused of attempted rape. Along the way, Turner learns about forgiveness, tolerance, and second chances, and overcomes his fear of death.

I like the way these two main characters got hooked up. Now I can go back and revisit the other books where their cooperative relationship is already established. The performance is great and I like that I can settle in with the same, trusty voices that carry through the books for each character.

Historia
The white power movement in America wants a revolution. It has declared all-out war against the federal government and its agents, and has carried out - with military precision - an escalating campaign of terror against the American public. In Bring the War Home, Kathleen Belew gives us the first full history of the movement that consolidated in the 1970s and 1980s around a potent sense of betrayal in the Vietnam War and made tragic headlines in the 1995 bombing of the Oklahoma City federal building.

Why so much violence?
Revisado: 08-23-18
I find this book useful in trying to understand the crazy and seemingly random violence we are trying to extinguish. Documented facts are the basis of the book and they are covered and organized to show how seemingly isolated events are actually interrelated. I'll probably also get the book to use as a historical reference.

more than a story
Revisado: 08-31-14
What did you love best about The Color Purple?
Feeling like I was part of people's lives, lives different from my own.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Celie, with many others a close second. I enjoyed the way she evolved on the outside so her inner self could show. When she said men looked like frogs I just laughed because her description was so accurate.
Which scene was your favorite?
The dinner scene when women spoke their own minds.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
When Mister said Sugar acted more like a man than a women, Celie told him men don't do those things (being strong, direct, protective, etc.) and those traits were more like women.
Any additional comments?
The honesty of some of the women in this book was amazing, insightful, brave. They were so in touch with what they really felt and observed.
I also learned a lot about history and different cultures. This was an excellent book in many ways. The reading could not have been better.

Natural, wholesome (but not corny), enjoyable read
Revisado: 07-21-14
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Sure. It moves along with realistic action, so there is never a dull page. The reader can feel at peace knowing that the story will be kind to their emotions and imagination.
What did you like best about this story?
The characters are regular people making small as well as big mistakes that speak to a reader.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
When the two women, who had been sisters-in-law, met again after decades of bad feelings.
Any additional comments?
I enjoyed the quilter background story that runs throughout. In fact it inspired me to sign up for a beginner quilting class.

Well Done
Revisado: 07-03-14
What made the experience of listening to The Power of One the most enjoyable?
The reader, H. Bower, has a perfect voice for this book.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Can't answer this question.
Have you listened to any of Humphrey Bower’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
My first.
If you could take any character from The Power of One out to dinner, who would it be and why?
The Zulu "brother" and chief who appeared near the end. He is so sincere and lives for his people. Also, it would be a pleasure to eat with someone who has such beautiful, white teeth and such classy manners.
Any additional comments?
This book teaches the reader about boxing and this I had not expected. I first saw the movie, which I count among my top 10 favorites. The story is excellent, a piece of history. As an audiobook it is among my top 5 favorites.

Meandering, as is life
Revisado: 06-19-14
Would you consider the audio edition of Light in August to be better than the print version?
I've only heard the audio, but it was excellent. The characters were formed in my mind the same as when I read a good book.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Light in August?
The future being born in a specific act in the past.
What about Will Patton’s performance did you like?
The different characters's voices supported the text. His reading voice was never distracting and was pleasant to hear for several hours.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
I don't understand this question.
Any additional comments?
At first I looked for a main character or plot, but then relaxed and just trusted the author to, eventually, reveal a theme and connect the lives. I felt that I was living in the times and among the people, following threads of different lives. Faulkner's observation and description of people's actions revealed underlying currents that control people and create "truths" where there is only reaction to embedded beliefs at work. The book treats racism and religion and sexual rules of conduct directly when one, or all, surface to take over; then things settle again into routine. It was as though Faulkner was walking next to me, revealing society and letting me learn to search out and examine my own underlying currents, but never directly pointing out or judging. He respects the reader's intelligence. Faulkner is truly a master writer.
