Condescending content and inconsistent narration
Revisado: 06-10-19
Like other reviewers said, the narration is so difficult to understand because of the cadence. At first I thought I was going crazy cause I couldn’t understand it. Feels like a trick to make you think you have ADD.
The content of the book was not much better either. It could have been the way the narrator read it, but I also felt like he was talking down to me on several occasions. His attitude feels like, “well can’t you see the problem here? It’s obvious!” He talked trash on Tesla because he get he didn’t reach the level of fame he wanted. Weird, right?
Finally, some of the content in the interviews sound straight up made up for theatrical purposes. I felt he threw in extra perverted tidbits for unnecessary reasons. He wrote, “she looked up and batted her eyes at me, but how will I ever change?” like his patients are flirting with him and they need him. Seeing as his patients are 15-30 years old and he’s been in the business for 20-25 years, it made me uncomfortable thinking this is how he recalls his sessions.
I made it to that point before I decided to call it quits. Don’t believe everything someone tells you because they have a PhD. They’re just as messed up as anyone else.

Not a fan of all the God talk
Revisado: 12-31-17
I thought I was getting an insightful book. It turned out to be a lot of talk of how God is good and can bless you.

Eye opener
Revisado: 12-31-17
I’ve spent a lot of my life trying to figure out why basic tasks felt so difficult but I was able to complete complex tasks with much less effort. I’ve been trying to fit into the “norm” when I wasn’t wired to work that way. I still had issues with accepting this path. His book helped me see I’ve made the right decision, which I am thankful for.

A quick motivational speech
Revisado: 05-11-17
At first, I hated it. He sounded like a pushy sales guy. Yet, I went on. I ended up agreeing with most of what he said. There were lots of tips I felt worthy of writing down. Overall it was a great listen to motivate yourself. I could see coming back to it later when I need a pick-me-up.

Meh
Revisado: 03-30-17
This felt like a big waste of time. Most of the book is a sales guy telling you how awesome he is at sales. The tips I heard were obvious, always coming back to "work harder". I actually fell asleep for a while and dreamt I was at a ponsi scheme pitch. If you're a typical sales person you'd probably love it.

This book spoke to me, but it won't speak to everyone
Revisado: 01-05-17
I think creatives, wanderers, vagabonds, and anyone with A.D.D. will enjoy this book. It's helped me understand the reasons I'm not so great in corporate world, though I do have skills to provide the world. It covers lots of topics: travel, business, education, friendships, and even some financials. All areas have a non-conformist way to them, though you don't need to adopt all. Keep what makes sense and forget the rest.

Jam packed with life advice
Revisado: 09-13-16
I enjoyed the no-nonsense advice. Doesn't try to hand-hold you, and the narrator helps vocalize it. I feel a slight confidence boost and motivated to start making my life the way I want it. I'll have another listen and see if I still feel that way.

Excellent hypnotherapy listen
Revisado: 08-29-16
I really enjoy listening to this when heading to sleep or if I need to calm down and can pull this out. His voice is soothing and the more times I listen the quicker I calm down.
My only gripe is the narrator comes back in after being silent for a while and it startles me every time. Also, the end of the book announces the Audible message and will wake me up if I was a sleep. That might be a benefit for some people.
Joel has a ton of different books on Audible. I'm trying out the 8hr version next.

A great, quick motivator
Revisado: 03-09-16
The information in this book is par for any other book I've read in this category. I could've sworn I even heard line for line paragraphs from other books I've read. It used a lot of the same popular quotes you'll hear elsewhere too.
However, I still enjoyed it. It's a quick listen -- easily completed in a day -- and the speakers voice is easy to follow. I got it on a daily deal so the price was great. I'll gladly use this book as a quick pick-me-up if I'm feeling discouraged about achieving my dreams. Might be worthwhile to re-read every few months to make sure I'm staying on track to my dream as well.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a well-tested collection of practical techniques for managing moods and modifying undesirable behaviors through self-awareness, critical analysis, and goal-oriented change. Better than relying on a Therapist
Revisado: 03-06-16
What did you love best about Cognitive Behavioral Therapy?
I suffer from Severe Anxiety and some minor Depression. I looked to this book as a solution for solving the problems on my own since therapy wasn't helping.
After reading this book I feel I've learned all I need to make a significant difference in my life. Even practicing in small amounts (now that I've just started), I feel a slight improvement, hoping to grow it more over time.
Although I've been to therapists who claim to be practicing CBT, all they did was sit and listen to me. They never tried any of the exercises outlined in the book. Seems like I've been wasting my money looking to them for help when all I really need is to know what I should be doing, then working on that.
If you are a self-motivated learner, this book can help you take advantage of CBT on your own.
If you are the kind of person to rely on someone else to help fix you, this book is still a good overview of what your therapist SHOULD be doing. If they aren't following these exercises, ditch them and find someone who will.
What other book might you compare Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to and why?
I've also been exploring practicing Mindfulness and Mind-Body related topics. My problems are generally stemming from my overactive mind, so these categories work well for me. I'd encourage you to search for some of those topics as well.
What about Professor Jason M. Satterfield’s performance did you like?
He sounds very caring -- even too caring at times. But how could you talk bad of a person like that? He covers both lecture style, and recorded sessions with real patients which was very insightful. It helps to look at them from the other side and imagine that's what you are like when you're there.
What did you learn from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy that you would use in your daily life?
Breathing exercises, thought journals, increasing self-awareness. Some great exercises in the book.
