Great Story With Much Information
Revisado: 04-25-25
Few books like this deliver both a fantastic story and enormous insight on the environment and its inhabitants (birds and whales). I wasn’t really sure whether I would enjoy a book that delved into “seed valts”, but the story was actually focused upon an individual family who were all emotionally broken after experiencing great loss, and the location of the island and the work the family did just added more to the plot itself. I will certainly be recommending this audiobook to everyone, and also plan on purchasing the hard cover to include in my home library. 👍🏼👍🏼

Historia
Beth and her gentle, kind husband Frank are happily married, but their relationship relies on the past staying buried. But when Beth’s brother-in-law shoots a dog going after their sheep, Beth doesn’t realize that the gunshot will alter the course of their lives. For the dog belonged to none other than Gabriel Wolfe, the man Beth loved as a teenager—the man who broke her heart years ago. Gabriel has returned to the village with his young son Leo, a boy who reminds Beth very much of her own son, who died in a tragic accident.

I stumbled upon this title and after listening to the publisher’s summary and the sample, I knew I had to purchase the audiobook and see for myself what so many book podcasters are talking about… The story is well told and narrated, and there are certainly a few twists and turns along the way. I do think that Broken Country is a book worth trying, and should be recommended to family and friends. Also, based on its subject matter, Broken Country could be a great selection for your book club, since hard topics are addressed and will make for interesting group discussions. Enjoy👍🏼👍🏼🙂 !

Historia
Isaac is at a crossroads in his young life. Growing up in Missouri, the son of a caustic, hard-driving father, he was conditioned to suppress his artistic pursuits and physical desires, notions that didn’t align with a traditional view of masculinity. But now, in late ’80s Chicago, Isaac has finally carved out a life of his own. He is sensitive and tenderhearted and has built up the courage to seek out a community. Yet just as he begins to embrace who he is, two social catalysts—the AIDS crisis and Rodney King’s attack—collectively extinguish his hard-earned joy.

Another Amazing Book
Revisado: 04-09-25
Wow! This author and the narrator are both terrific!!! I could not stop listening, and in fact, I stayed up super late last night to finish it because I needed to know how it ended. It really touched my heart and brought tears to my eyes. This is definitely a story worth hearing and preferably, listening to if possible. I look forward to future books from Dr. Black. 👍🏼👍🏼❤️

Perfection!!!
Revisado: 04-01-25
Everything about this audiobook is wonderful, from the actual story to Robin Miles performance… I loved it all and could not get enough! There are few audiobooks that manage to deliver in both areas, so I tend to dislike most of what I listen to, but with Harlem Rhapsody, the novel flowed beautifully and the narration was like music to my ears. I learned a lot about that period of time, and about several of the writers and poets from then as well… W.e.b. Du Bois and Jessie Redmon Fauset’s work and personal relationship. Please take the chance and see for yourself. Also, Personal Librarian is fabulous too!!! 👍🏼👍🏼

Pretty Close To Perfect!!!
Revisado: 03-21-25
I took a chance with this audiobook as something that might be good for listeners preferring Historical Fiction and a wonderful performance, and after just finishing the story, I can truly say that this selection is worth your time and purchase. Despite the sample sounding great, the narrator actually managed to bring us that same kind of believability throughout the entire read. Also, I was a bit hesitant about the story having a ghost and the ghost appearing every so often to speak with one of the characters, but this aspect of the story never got out of hand nor made me question why I would want to continue with the book… Much to my surprise, the ghost portion worked well and didn’t feel at all silly. This audiobook looks at domestic abuse, LGBTQ, what does friendship really mean, and family bonds. Enjoy!.

After listening to the book sample a few nights ago, I really jumped at the chance to purchase the audiobook and also order an online copy of the hard back for my library shelves. Both the story and narration are well told, and sincerely made me wanting more from this author and the performer.

Not Her Best!
Revisado: 02-20-25
Sadly, I just didn’t enjoy this book from an author I usually read/listen to. The story really dragged along and wasn’t what I had expected… Frankly, it was pretty boring! As for these narrators, they are both terrific performers, but I think with this book, they had very little to work with, and could not engage the listener.

Unrealistic!
Revisado: 02-09-25
I’m still trying to get through the last hour of this audiobook, but sadly, I keep saying to myself, “why am I even continuing with it, especially when the story is so insanely farfetched”… Details would never in a million years pan out like the author is hoping you might believe. To enjoy this book, you definitely need to suspend reality. As for the actual narration, I’ve liked the performer when she recorded The Teacher by the same author, but I’m not at all impressed with her doing this audiobook. Perhaps, it’s more to do though with the plot, and the narrator had little to work with because of that. Just hoping I can make it to the finish line.

Cate Kay knows how to craft a story. As the creator of a bestselling book trilogy that struck box office gold as a film series, she’s one of the most successful authors of her generation. The thing is, Cate Kay doesn’t really exist. She’s never attended author events or granted any interviews. Her real identity had been a closely guarded secret, until now.

A wonderful Listen!
Revisado: 02-05-25
This story is beautifully told; it drew me in and would not let go! It was really heartfelt, and brought to the surface how true friendships stand the test of time, despite some serious bumps in the road and what seems like obstacles you can’t get past. The book is reminiscent of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, another incredible read worth getting.👍🏼

Expected More!
Revisado: 01-27-25
Both performers did a wonderful job of bringing their characters to life and allowing us to really get a sense of who they were, but unfortunately, I just couldn’t appreciate the story itself… It had twists and turns and kept the reader/listener trying to figure out who did what, but the premise was simply absurd and definitely not worth my time! This book was my first from the author, and based on my impressions, I probably won’t be interested in sampling any others.
