Just to be clear I loved this book! I always kind of dread book 1 of a new series. It always feels like that hurdle you have to get passed before the series good. That isn’t the case with this book. It was engaging from the get go. It doesn’t get bogged down by over explaining the world. More importantly, it doesn’t have the common problem seen in many sci-fi books I’ve read in the past. This book doesn’t spend chapter after chapter explaining the science or pseudo science. It’s really well balanced. The characters are awesome. I rarely read a book where I like all of the characters, I found it difficult to pick a favorite because I loved them all. I really enjoyed the pop culture references also. It isn’t forced or used as a distraction. You can tell that Robert Ross really loves blade runner and Star Trek. It all feels really genuine. The motivations of the antagonist aliens are elusive to say the least. I don’t want to spoil anything, but I’m looking forward to a clearer understanding of their motives in the books to come. Shout out to Nick for the fantastic narration as always. You seem to outshine yourself every time you narrate a new book. I really am looking forward to continuing the series.

This book was the volume I finished the quickest and have the hardest time writing a review on. I had a few very sincere emotions while reading this book. Let’s start with hate. I know this is odd because I left a 5 star review, but let me clarify. I hate Marius the Sentinel of Chaos more than I can explain in this brief review. Basically, the only villain I have ever hated as much as Marius, is Commodus from the Ridley Scott film Gladiator. The next strongest emotion I felt was sadness. I despise spoilers, so you will not find any here. Just heed my warning and be prepared to feel significant sadness. Lastly, joy was another emotion I felt. Joy caused by laughter, but more strongly, is joy caused by displays of affection that so many of the characters have for each other. Now go read this book and be confident that you will find your self fully invested in this series.

Even better than the first

Recently finished book 2, and I have to say, these books just keep getting better. This book still has the fantastic pace, humor and character building that I loved about the first book. However, what makes this book transcend the previous one is the new characters that the author has added. In the first book, the characters very much owned the characters you would expect them to have based on their “nature.” In book 2 new characters are introduced that act in surprisingly complex ways that often are at odds with their nature. Those that you expected to be good because of what they are may have nefarious objectives, and those that you expect to be of chaos maybe the truest and best of allies. This made the book extremely entertaining and very hard to put down. You never knew how you would be surprised next. Now go read these books. You won’t regret it.

This book was fantastic. I love the fast pace and the vivid world created. It’s great because time is not wasted on over explaining the features of a from scratch world. The author builds off many of the stories and mythology most readers are already familiar with. This makes for an easy to consume foundation. The characters are all interesting. Each has a unique quality that makes it easy to empathize with them. I laughed out loud frequently. The authors references to things like Doctor Who shows he is actually a fan, and not just trying to play to what he thinks the readers want to hear. I loved book 1 from the start which is rare for me. I listened to the audio book and Nick Podehl was a fantastic narrator. His voice changes are seamless and appreciated. Now stop reading this and go read or listen to this book!!!
