Cha Ming is back in Verdant Crossroads, and for now, his allies are safe. The Thread Seer has chosen to honor her promise and has begun crafting a new body for the Monkey King. Her seclusion has not gone unnoticed, however. Verdant Crossroads’ traditional allies are giving them the cold shoulder, and their neighbor, the Republic of Fendal, is now eyeing their territory. It falls to the junior Thread Seer, Clever Dusk, to cobble together a defense—and to Cha Ming, her teacher, to help her.

Aamon continues to grow in strength while Lusam and his party attempt to forge new alliances with the dragons of Podrana. New Netherworld horrors are created and unleashed by Aamon while he makes his final preparations for escape. Humanity’s only hope of finally sealing The Rift and preventing the world’s destruction now lies in Lusam’s ability to find a dragon willing to bond with him, so that he, too, can become a fully-fledged Guardian. But they soon discover that the dragon’s homeland of Eindryl has changed a great deal since Arlo and Ryuu were last there.

After accidentally discovering the possible existence of a second Guardian book, Lusam and his party are remorselessly hunted high into the Elveen mountains by the Empire agents, who are intent on killing or capturing them. What they discover there may very well change the balance of power in their favor against the Thule Empire. But their discovery will count for nothing if they cannot reach Lamuria in time to try and stop the massive invasion force sent by Lord Zelroth.
