Historia
On Winston Churchill’s first day as prime minister, Adolf Hitler invaded Holland and Belgium. Poland and Czechoslovakia had already fallen, and the Dunkirk evacuation was just two weeks away. For the next 12 months, Hitler would wage a relentless bombing campaign, killing 45,000 Britons. It was up to Churchill to hold his country together and persuade President Franklin Roosevelt that Britain was a worthy ally - and willing to fight to the end. In The Splendid and the Vile, Erik Larson shows how Churchill taught the British people "the art of being fearless."

The terrible narrator
Revisado: 03-22-25
I assume this is a good book. I usually enjoy Erik Larson’s work. But I didn’t get very far because I found the narrator to be monotonous and somewhat annoying.

Historia
Romain Curtis sneaks into St. George’s Gardens one evening with his date, planning to show her the stars. A centuries-old burial ground, the small, quiet park is the perfect place to be alone. Yet the night takes a chilling turn when the two teenagers spy a strange figure rising from among the tombstones: a corpse emerging from the grave. Suffice it to say that wherever there’s a dead man walking, Bryant and May and the Peculiar Crimes Unit are never far behind.

Love the narration

One of the most interesting Bryant and May plots. The details hooked in so well to historic persons who lived in London’s Bloomsbury in the 1800’s

Good story
Revisado: 08-21-14
Is there anything you would change about this book?
A different narrator. Her style is breathless and bumpy.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Susan Duerden?
Davina Porter
Do you think The Prime Minister's Secret Agent needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
Yes, of course. We need to see Maggie in the US, find out what path her mother follows, and see how her half sister gets released from Germany.

Couldn't Suspend my Disbelief
Revisado: 08-15-12
I kept thinking about the theory that memory formation is dependent on the development of language and the concept of "thinking in pictures". These twin distractions prevented me from enjoying the book. The fault probably lies with me and not the author. Oddly, the concept of canine re-incarnation didn't make me pause, but I couldn't get past the doggy narration.

Historia
Headstrong and beautiful, the young housemaid Sally Jupp is put rudely in her place, strangled in her bed behind a bolted door. Coolly brilliant policeman Adam Dalgliesh of Scotland Yard must find her killer among a houseful of suspects, most of whom had very good reason to wish her ill. Cover Her Face is P. D. James' electric debut novel, an ingeniously plotted mystery that immediately placed her among the masters of suspense.

A Bit slow
Revisado: 05-24-12
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
I understand that this is the debut of Inspector Dalgleish. The plot was a bit slow, and the narrator even more so. I found listening at 1 1/2 speed to be about right. the audio sounded like it had been recorded over a phone, and there was a slight ground loop hum in the background. Overall, I wish I had read this book rather than listened to it. I should have listened more closely to sample. Even so, I plan on reading or listening to more P D James.
Would you recommend Cover Her Face to your friends? Why or why not?
I would recommend the book, not the recording.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Penelope Dellaporta?
Katherine Kellgren or Donada Peters
Do you think Cover Her Face needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
I believe it has several.

Historia
Alexis de Tocqueville's renowned analysis of American democracy still has relevance today. In 1831 de Tocqueville was sent to America by the French government to study the U.S. penal system, but his real aim was to observe a democratic republic firsthand to see if such an entity could function with dignity and humanity. His travels, which took him to the cities of the Northeast, to the frontier and the Great Lakes, down the Mississippi and through the South, showed him a great deal about the United States. In 1834, he wrote Democracy in America, in which he examines the advantages and pitfalls of democracy, the conditions and conflicts among the races, and the movements that grip the country.

Wonderful View from the Outside

"Democracy in America" is a wonderful snapshot of the American republic taken by a European tourist and scholar. The audio rendition is so-so, but the text carries the day.

Wooden Reader
Revisado: 07-30-08
I have openly wept reading these essays with their vision of what our republic could be and what it could turn into if we make the wrong choices. So I was predisposed to enjoy this audio book, but the reader was so dry and seemingly uninvolved that I can't recommend this one.

Historia
America is starkly divided between the haves and the have-nots. A Republican president seeks reelection in the afterglow of a war many view as unnecessary and imperialistic. He is bankrolled by millionaires, with every step of his career orchestrated by a political mastermind. Religious extremists crusade against the nation’s moral collapse. Terrorists plot the assassination of leaders around the world. And a lonely, disturbed revolutionary stalks the President.... It all happened. One hundred years ago. It all comes to life in The Temple of Music.
