OMG. I thought this book was going to talk about the story of Jesus and how it radically changed, particularly in the hands of Paul after Jesus’ death and the destruction of Jerusalem. Nope.

This isn’t even really a book. I swear it was written by some unhinged AI. It rambles about genitals and trees with genitals and how sex is dirty…because genitals. Then it moves on to how old people got in the Bible and how they all had different bones. It’s antisemitic and completely unaligned with anything biblical. Or historical. Or sane.

Someone please confirm that there really is an author by this name. If there is and he’s human, lock him up. Immediately.

I would love this series! In less than an hour this author built a live triangle, a world of dangerous dragons, a heroine with powerful love and loyalty to her family, and elves. I would read this. Please write it! I love your voice!

I've had several Henty books in my library for a while and after reading many books on the Roman Empire and the early settling and fight for what today is Britain, I was happy to listen to this historical fiction. The reviews are fantastic and it wasn't until I got through the first chapter that I looked at when it was published and did a little homework on the author. Published in the late 1800s, this book is written in the traditional writing style of the period. While most of the historical events are "accurate," this book is like having a Viking tale written by Jane Austen. It's completely inauthentic. Additionally, this book is meant to be educational for children. So the story is "gentled" by having the Romans truly wish they COULD be kinder colonizers, but the darn tribal residents of the island just won't get in line and are forcing the Romans to be cruel. I got two thirds of the way through and just had to stop. Henty introduces too many inaccuracies and prejudices of early historians and general society of the day. My time will be better spent on Bernard Cornwell and other modern authors for my historical fiction.

Fantastically written comparison of the business entrepreneurship of Johannes Gutenberg in the development of the printing press, the legal battle with business investors and his determination to make his process available for all. Fascinating history of Gutenberg comparing his exploits to those we commonly see in Silicon Valley. It's a very short piece. Educational and fun. Relatable and interesting.

Charlie Tuesday back at it!

I've really enjoyed this series. Charlie Tuesday, the orphan turned private investigator, or thief taker, is fun to follow as he's solving crimes for the poor and deserving. The backdrop of London during the Great Fire, told in tandem with story line about the royal family is fascinating. I love this imperfect hero and his love interest (or not?) Lili, the gypsy catholic spy. From what I've read in other reviews, the historical details aren't perfect, so if you are an historian, perhaps this isn't the book for you, but if you love historical fiction and don't mind small liberties to be taken to improve the story, this is an exciting and educational mystery with intrigue and puzzles galore. The storyline with the Royals and court is interesting and gives perspective of the challenges of a monarchy completely out of touch with the common people. Lili's gypsy status and Catholic persuasion highlights religious and class persecution. The narrator is wonderful, too. Can't wait for more in this series!

Spellmonger

Revisado: 11-14-17

Minalan is a Spellmonger, otherwise known as a local magician, in a small rural farm community, when his local town is attacked by a horde of Gurvani (called Goblins, but not your traditional goblins). He and his apprentice jump into the fray to protect the townspeople. It soon becomes evident that these Gurvani are strangely armed with magical items and are bent on destroying humanity.

The Pluses: Terry Mancoeur has created magical creatures that are unique and quite frankly, hilarious. The goblins are small hairy little man-like, unintelligent creatures, not at all like any goblins I've run into in stories. Minalan's descriptions are very funny, but he also has a sensitivity for these creatures that I found touching, until they started trying to kill all of mankind, then, he was a little less kind...but that's to be expected.

Minalan has a sarcastic wit that is entertaining and strangely balances his egocentric voice with his honestly about his own insecurities.

While he's a bit cocky, it does turn out that he does have quite a heroic background giving him a little credibility for some arrogance. He jumps right into helping the village and surrounding peoples by grouping them in the liege lord's castle for protection when the goblins overrun the valley.

The minuses: Rating this book was difficult for me because I almost gave up on this book so many times. The story was fine, but over and over I kept thinking I'd rather read this myself rather than listen to the voice/persona chosen by the narrator. All I could think was how pompous and self-aggrandizing he was, but he seemed to think he was self deprecating. It really rubbed me the wrong way. But I stuck with it and over time I got used to it. If you're sensitive to narration, make sure you listen to the sample because it's a long book.

Song of Shattered Sands

I wonder how many times I've been tempted to start a review with this may be my new favorite series of all times or my new favorite author... There are some really amazing worlds and magic-systems out there, and this one is one of the best. I hesitated to read it because of several negative reviews on Audible and I'm so glad I went with my gut and grabbed this book, because I ended up really loving it! I can't give it 5 stars all the way across because it took me a little bit to get used to the narrator. That seems to be the complaint of others as well. Honestly, though, by the end, I couldn't imagine anyone else's voice doing the narration. Just stick it out, it's a great story.

The story begins in medias res, so the reader needs to be patient and let the story unfold the way Beaulieu tells it. We start with Ceda, a tough-as-nails teen orphan girl who has taken to pit fighting to make her way on the streets of Sharakhai. We learn about the life of the poor of children Sharakhai, the gutter wrens, the Kings who rule, the Maidens who guard the Kings, and the Asirim who are the monsterous and mysterious dangerous slaves of the Kings.

There are a large number of story lines, all somehow tied to Ceda and as the story unfolds, her role and importance to the city becomes increasingy understandable.

There is a little love story blooming with her childhood friend Emre, creating a little angst and suspense.

To wrap up...This may end up being my new favorite series of all time. We'll have to see:)

For those who care: yes, there is sex, drugs, cursing in the book. It's not like Game of Thrones, but it's not clean.

Alex Fletcher is the ultimate suburban prepper. We met this ex-marine, technologist in the first book in the series and now his family is finding themselves in even more dire straits.

Steven Konkoly has written the ultimate EOTWAWKI novel with both a fascinating story, and a good example of how prepping can be done in a suburban environment. In the Jakarta Pandemic, a pandemic takes out the America economy and now the country has been hit by an EMP. Alex Fletcher and company group with friends and neighbors, travel to locate missing family members and deal with ongoing social and infrastructure decay. Love this series. Learning a lot and really like the characters!
