This is a quirky and warm novel. It is a fantasy but comes across quite convincing in its own way. I very much appreciated both the author’s imagination and sense of humor.

The interesting ideas don’t add up to the creation of a well constructed novel with depth. The loose structure is weighted down by over-writing in each descriptive moment. Sorry to report that I was disappointed. The reader was good.

I loved the preposterous humor in many of the situations and the fact that along with humor some serious moral issues and some history are addressed. The dialog of the Golem is made even funnier when read aloud.

An important part of Holocaust history. Very vivid. Not easy to read because of the horrific content, but I could read it in small sections over time.

Memorable protagonist. Quirky plot. Also good narrator on the audio version whose voices are better than those I would create in my own head when reading.

A nice, we’ll written interlude that made me smile. The reader does justice to the words.

The characters are strong and loving individuals who have a very hard life as very poor people — and that’s before they are assaulted by Hurricane Katrina. Wonderfully written descriptions of some extremely painful scenes.

A powerful and clear call to look at the state of the U.S. and a call for us to learn AND to act to put in place antiracist policies.

The writing is good, and the story moves along effortlessly. The honest focus on both bulimia and social media makes this not just another beach read. A valuable book for women — younger women and teenage girls especially. Nice (and accurate) love letter to Martha’s Vineyard.

Jonathan Kaufman seems to me to be captivated so completely by the “kings” that he fails to tell us much about their failings until a hurried final chapter in which he alternates between descriptions of everything that was negative about the “kings” and attempts to soften the negative descriptions. Kaufman is writing about an important time in history and about important historic figures. I appreciate that. The work is not very good as history but it will lead readers to want to know more about the time, place and the people — both the 1% and the Chinese 99%.
