Unraveling racism
Revisado: 03-31-22
This book was so much better than I expected. I was expecting a book of instruction for white people on antiracism (I blame the title for that), but what I got was a black man's journey through the unraveling of his own internalized racism and the choices he made to become antiracist. Masterfully told. The only thing I think detracted from the book was the very last chapter. I won't spoil anything, but I'll just say that I felt the analogy he used was pushed a little too hard.

Historia
Hiking with Nietzsche is a tale of two philosophical journeys - one made by John Kaag as an introspective young man of 19, the other 17 years later and in quite different circumstances: as a husband and father. Both journeys are made in search of the wisdom at the core of Nietzsche's philosophy, but they deliver him to radically different interpretations and, more crucially, revelations about the human condition.

I guess if you have read Nietzsche, you can probably relate more. I couldn't relate, though.

New in sight into stale old language

I found this book interesting for the first 10 or 11 chapters, but only academically. It was in chapter 12 that it really kicked into gear making good use of the foundation Jonathan laid with the previous chapters, so pay attention in those earlier chapters! This book absolutely changed the way I look at sacred language and the carelessness with which I use (abuse?) sacred words. Good read, definitely recommend. Looking forward to his next project.

Conventional wisdom holds that America has been a Christian nation since the Founding Fathers. But in One Nation Under God, historian Kevin M. Kruse argues that the idea of "Christian America" is nothing more than a myth - and a relatively recent one at that.

Eye opening!

The depth and detail of the rich history of the religious right in America is on full display in this wonderful book. If you've been told the same hearsay hand-me-down lies my religious leaders have told me because that was what they were told, this book will give you great new perspective of the truth behind today's American conservative republican Christianity.
