Historia
Neal Stephenson is a blazing new force on the sci-fi scene. With the groundbreaking cyberpunk novel Snow Crash, he has "vaulted onto the literary stage." It weaves virtual reality, Sumerian myth, and just about everything in between with a cool, hip cybersensibility - in short, it is the gigathriller of the information age.

grab bag of good worldbuilding & bad storytelling
Revisado: 12-17-23
At the start I really enjoyed this book. The first third is an excellent 90's-era views of a semi-dystopian cyberpunk-ish future. You can really tell the author of Ready Player One got a lot of inspiration from this book. The story structure was really interesting jumping between past and present across the two main characters while building on the details of the world but not overpowering the reader. Also, as a software engineer I really liked the perspective on where tech would be in this world.
Then the middle of the story hits and it becomes a slog of having someone read college-level theology essays to you. The shift in tone and pacing almost gave me whiplash. This continues for a good few hours until finally the author seemed to remember that the story needed an arc and so far all we had was a wobbling line. So, we rush right into the final part of the story with very little explanation and at this point a lot of the motivations and characterization completely fall apart for the sake of bringing the story where the author wants it to go. This part also includes a very sudden and awkwardly written sexual plot with a 15 year old girl that felt extremely out of place in the larger scope of the story.
I won't give any spoilers, but usually when I read a book I expect it to have an ending. This story just... stops. And I don't mean the "draw your own conclusions" type of ending I mean the climactic scene takes place then then we immediately get about 20 seconds of denouement with a whole *ton* of threads left hanging loose.
For the first third of this book I absolutely agreed with the other positive reviews and thought this was great, but after the rest of it I just can't understand why people enjoy it.
The narration was good. I've most certainly heard much worse. There were some very noticeable shifts in audio quality throughout but none of them really took me out of it and, to me, it matches with the quality you tend to get from "books on tape" of that time period.

Historia
The Reaper is a legend, more myth than man: the savior of worlds, the leader of the Rising, the breaker of chains. But the Reaper is also Darrow, born of the red soil of Mars: a husband, a father, a friend. The worlds once needed the Reaper. But now they need Darrow. Because after the dark age will come a new age: of light, of victory, of hope.

Can't wait for the conclusion
Revisado: 10-05-23
Great story and I can't wait to see how it all comes together in the last book. I understand some people's complaints about TGR in this book but I think he did a great job. My only complaint is that I feel like he never really nailed down Lysander's voice. Also, a bit of personal preference, but I find it easier to follow conversations when the narration isn't also in the character's voice. The only reader I really missed was Lyria's - she knocked it out of the park in the previous two books.

Always a fun time
Revisado: 05-25-23
The narration is, as always, fantastic. As for the story, this series has never been one for the ages but every installment has been an enjoyable experience that is always well written. Everything always works out fine for the good guys, but you know what? That isn't a bad thing. Sometimes you just need this kind of story in your life and this installment continues to fulfill that. I'm looking forward to the next one.

Almost everything they've done since then has, in one way or another, blown up in their faces. So of course they decide to make dragons. It does not go well.

Below Expectations
Revisado: 05-26-17
I loved all the previous books, but this one just felt like filler to me. All the others had an engaging story where you couldn't obviously see what came next. This book was basically the slow and predictable resolution of the event set up in the first handful of chapters. Having just heard the end, it almost felt like it was supposed to be the intro part of a much bigger story that ended up being too big for one book, so they took the intro and padded it out into its own volume. That said, I am very eagerly awaiting the next book as it seems we'll be getting back into some of the unique and interesting material that made this series so engaging in the first place.
Also, Luke Daniels is awesome, as always.
