Men in Black meets H.P. Lovecraft and Harry Potter. Clever, hilariously witty, and kept me listening

Differently Morphus is a hilarious tale
where the British government secretly knows about and regulates magic. Creatures from another world have sought asylum on Earth and must be protected by the British government, literally and politically. I laughed out loud many times, and kept listening for hours on end. Yahtzee isn’t the best narrator, but he connects with his characters’ performance in a way that only the author can. Very enjoyable listen and I strongly recommend it!

Wonderfully witty story, lessened only slightly by amateur voice acting

I love Ben “Yahtzee” Croshaw’s quintessentially British style. Imagine Terry Pratchett and Douglas Adams wrote the lore for World of Warcraft and you’ve got the idea!

Some of Yahtzee’s voice acting is a little lacking and the overall production and editing could use some work, but I loved every minute and immediately started listening again after I finished.

It’s a surprisingly deep, dark, and funny story that will appeal to anyone passingly familiar with fantasy video games and RPGs, but might not be as impactful to someone unfamiliar with the concepts. Overall, 9/10!

Without being too dramatic, this is the most annoying audiobook I’ve ever heard. I tend to not like multi voice audiobook performances, but I thought I would give this a try since I loved the series so much as a kid. I made it about an hour into the book before I quit. It’s not that the actors are bad, it’s that their rendition of the characters is annoying. Sonny in particular was unbearable, there was a moment fairly early in the book where she is crying at Olaf and there’s over a minute straight of high pitched baby crying under the narrator and I just couldn’t take it anymore.

If you really want to listen to the series, find a different version.

The book is interesting and insightful, as is all of Sebastian Junger’s work, but this one feels a bit rambling and untethered to the main theme. If you have a free credit and have enjoyed any of his previous work, you’re likely to enjoy this book, but I found a good deal of the content to be untethered from the theme.
