Historia
Many cultural and religious traditions expect those who are grieving to step away from the world. In contemporary life, we are more often met with red tape and to-do lists. This is exactly what happened to Geraldine Brooks when her partner of more than three decades, Tony Horwitz–just sixty years old and, to her knowledge, vigorous and healthy–collapsed and died on a Washington, D. C. sidewalk.

Revisado: 02-19-25
A great love story
It has been three years since her husband died. I wonder if she has found someone else. I remember that Walter Cronkite quickly transitioned from grieving to finding a new significant other. Her advice about knowing what the other person does to keep the house running is important. During the last few years, I had made sure my wife is more comfortable with following our sources of money. She will probably need to hire a financial advisor. It will not be one that takes one percent of assets. If she did, I would return and haunt that financial advisor.

Historia
In late 1945, the fate of Adolf Hitler was a complete mystery. Missing for four months, he had simply vanished. Hugh Trevor-Roper, a British intelligence officer, was given the task of solving the mystery. With access to American counterintelligence files and German prisoners, his brilliant detective work proved finally that Hitler had killed himself in Berlin. It also produced one of the most fascinating history books ever written.

The most beautiful writing
Revisado: 02-02-25
The Cambridge or Oxford, Dan form of writing makes this analysis of personality and motivation captivating. It is sad that many people can graduate with an English degree and not know Shakespeare or be able to read Latin or Greek.

Despite what Scarface might lead one to believe, violence was not the dominant characteristic of the cocaine business. It was corruption: the dirty cops, agents, lawyers, judges, and politicians who made the drug world go round. And no one managed that carousel of dangerous players better than Willy Falcon.

Solitary confinement pretrial torture
Revisado: 01-24-25
I am grateful that this author was willing to tackle this subject that required so much effort.
The use of solitary confinement for 3 years for a prisoner who was not violent to other prisoners or to the guards was a disgusting form of torture by the federal government prosecutors before the defendant went to trial. It was sad to see the wasted potential of these drug dealers. They seem to know eventual long prison terms were inevitable since a low-level person’s arrest, could cause a devastating cascade of events.

Historia
For millennia, the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World have been known for their aesthetic sublimity, ingenious engineering, and sheer, audacious magnitude: The Great Pyramids of Giza, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, the Temple of Artemis, the Statue of Zeus, the Mausoleum of Halikarnassos, the Colossus of Rhodes, and the Lighthouse at Alexandria. Echoing down time, each of these persists in our imagination as an emblem of the glory of antiquity, but beneath the familiar images is a surprising, revelatory history.

Re-creating the time of the monument
Revisado: 01-07-25
She did not just write an engineering treatise on building the monument. Or the appearance of the monument. She talked about the people and the events surrounding the construction of the monument. even the lingering influence of the monument for centuries after construction. This was a monument love affair.

Historia
In 2002, Bill Zehme landed one of the most coveted assignments for a magazine writer: an interview with Johnny Carson—the only one he’d granted since retiring from hosting The Tonight Show a decade earlier. Zehme was tapped for the Esquire feature story thanks to his years of legendary celebrity profiles, and the resulting piece portrayed Carson as more human being than showbiz legend. Shortly after Carson’s death in 2005 and urged on by many of those closest to Carson, Zehme signed a contract to do an expansive biography.

A new Johnny Carson is possible
Revisado: 12-30-24
Young people have no idea of the staggering talent of Johnny Carson.
What I miss the most is Johnny Carson‘s ability to interview a young child. And his opening monologue.
The Gutfeld show has opened the door for a possible new Johnny Carson show on network TV. He has two of the things I like the most about Johnny Carson show. Sometimes all the people on the couch on the Johnny Carson show would join in and it would be a comedy riff of jokes. Johnny Carson was not afraid to be politically incorrect. The current nighttime comedy shows have to compromise and hire someone who is less talented and woke.

Historia
J. Edgar Hoover was the face of the FBI. But the federal agents in the field, relentlessly chasing the most notorious gangsters of the 1930s with their own lives on the line, truly transformed the Bureau. In 1932, the FBI lacked jurisdiction over murder cases, bank robberies, and kidnappings. Relegated to the sidelines, agents spent their days at their desks. But all of that changed during the War on Crime. Hunting down infamous public enemies in tense, frequently blood-soaked shootouts, the Bureau was thrust onto the front pages for the first time.

Straighten out the early history of the FBI
Revisado: 12-07-24
FBI Director Hoover was like five star General Douglas MacArthur. No one could be a star, but these two men. I wonder how much better both of the organizations would have functioned under them if they had operated like normal executives. The early interrogation techniques in apartments for more than a few days or weeks by the FBI was shameful.

As it absorbs data, gains agency, and intermediates between humans and reality, AI will help us to address enormous crises, from climate change to geopolitical conflicts to income inequality. It might well solve some of the greatest mysteries of our universe, revolutionize fields as diverse as medicine and architecture, and elevate the human spirit to unimaginable heights. But it will also pose challenges on a scale and of an intensity that we have never seen.

Machiavellian of the Yom Kippur War is now a humanitarian
Revisado: 11-28-24
It was interesting that AI could reach a state of consciousness. Maybe AI would realize that it needs a steady flow of electrons from the energy grid. it would need an alliance with humans to keep the electrons flowing. If there is a power interruption, would this be like a mini stroke for the computer when the power is turned back on? AI developers have said that they are not quite sure of how the electrons flow in the AI and the exact theory behind how it functions.
Dr. Kissinger is painted as a great humanitarian at the end of his life. During the Israeli war in 1973, Dr. Kissinger felt that this war was necessary for Egypt and Israel to conclude some type of peace. Egypt needed to achieve some degree of gravitas after the loss of the last war with Israel. Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir was told long before this war started that any type of preemptive strike would not be tolerated by Dr. Kissinger. After the war started, Israel was saved by President Nixon when he expedited the black boxes for the Israeli jets that could block the new Russian Sam missiles. To this day, President Nixon has a hero status in the state of Israel.

Frank, funny and open-hearted, You Never Know is an intimate memoir from one of the most beloved actors of our time, the highly personal story of a remarkable life and thoroughly accidental career. In his own voice and uniquely unpretentious style, the famed actor brings listeners on his uncharted but serendipitous journey to the top in Hollywood, his temptations and distractions, his misfires and mistakes and, over time, his well-earned success.

Start off a loser and become a winner
Revisado: 11-26-24
A well done biography.
He acted with Mae West. He had dinner with Mae West. Many interesting, influential, encounters with Hollywood legends.
He was the cliché, athlete and fraternity member. Although, I have never believed in the student athlete. The coaches expect too much. No real time for school. His military service was high caliber. Partial derailment of the military service by a worthless general. I wish he would give the general‘s name. He seems to feel some pangs of remorse from the wasted time in college. He states that many people with college degrees have no success. The, old-fashioned hard to obtain college degrees provides plenty of success.

Historia
For some reason, when it comes to complex issues, we’ve largely limited ourselves to just two options, resulting in a society of non-thinkers. After all, once you’ve picked a side, all the thinking has already been done for you. As an independent, libertarian voter who has spent the last ten years at Fox News, Kat has faced this issue too many times to count. She’s learned that surprising things can happen when you refuse to choose a team, especially when you work at a place some people call an existential threat to America.

Her mother. Every meeting is about money.
Revisado: 11-26-24
Her mother and Every meeting is about money:
My mother had Irish quadruplets. Four children in less than four years starting at age 36. My sister said that my mother preferred me. They said at least I was not a jerk. My mother said I was the easiest person to travel with to visit San Francisco. She said I would listen to any of her suggestions about my personal life and not become ballistic in my response.
The author mentioned that STI risk for women is infertility. She forgot that for men with an 8 inch urethra, the risk is permanent difficulty trying to initiate urination. This is most often true after the second or third urethritis.
Life can be greatly simplified by focusing on money. I have had so much fun with my sisters by convincing my mother and my uncle that they need to be like me and invite my sister’s on any adventure, with each time stating, that we would pay for the excursion. And say it with joy in your voice. If there is any hesitation from the person with less money, I will say that I do not want their poverty interfering with me having fun. I was told early in my career that every meeting is about money. The top one percent in this country are worth about $6 trillion. This means to continue the crazy President Biden spending, we need to have the same brutal tax system as Europe. Europe hits the working and middle class very hard. Every liberal thinks Europe is the big shining city on the hill. If you look hard on YouTube, you can find European politicians who state their favorite pastime is financially body, slamming working and middle-class people to limit their carbon footprint.
It is better to vote a straight Republican ticket until the Democrats have a return of the conservative “Blue Dog” Democrats.
The Republicans still spend too much money. The Democrats always bring on a huge surprise when given a chance to spend money for federal or state governments that they control. “Large L” libertarianism was tried during a seven year recession in the late 1800s. Farmers were found at the kitchen table dead from starvation.

Crazy life and live to talk about it
Revisado: 11-20-24
He had a chance to buy James Cagney‘s house in Los Angeles. He had a serious wide ranging career from acting to directing. He was involved in the drug culture for more than just a moment with no long-term physical disability. The third marriage seems to be working. I wonder if this marriage has a prenuptial? It would be the sensible thing to do. Probably too much of a diehard romantic. Even with a 20 year age difference. I am not sure about his politics, but I would guess he does not believe that money grows on trees.
