Historia
Still spinning from the hustle and bustle of city life, Jodie ‘Nosey’ Parker is glad to be back in the Cornish village she calls home. Having quit the Met Police in search of something less dangerous, the change of pace means she can finally start her dream catering company and raise her daughter, Daisy, somewhere safer. But there’s nothing quite like having your first job back at home be catering an ex-boyfriend’s wedding to remind you of just how small your village is.

Writing Is Not Good Enough
Revisado: 05-30-24
I can't believe that an editor didn't get involved in this book. The author could have made something satisfactory with some professional guidance. As it is, this is just not good enough. It's very difficult to review a book without any spoilers so you might consider some of this the smallest spoiler, such as the murder suspect being a "he/him" but I won't give away the plot. It's just that the female main character moves home, runs into an old friend from high school, there's a murder, he is one of the suspects, and our fmc spends the rest of the book saying I know he couldn't have done it, I KNOW, he can't have done it, I'm telling you he couldn't have done something like this, I know deep down he didn't do it, but I'm telling you I KNOW, I know him he couldn't do this, but I know him, I know he didn't do this. It is the laziest writing, it's so annoying, and we don't get any reasons why someone you knew twenty years ago can't have committed a crime, until almost the end of the book where we're told he can't have done this because he's nice and he used to birdwatch with his grandpa. (eye roll). I can't stand being told things, especially over and over, where a better writer could have shown us through this person's actions or background or flashbacks or something showing why they are so different than any other random human who may well be pushed to violence. The things we do read about him show him to be a dolt with no personality (meaning the author didn't bother to give him a personality). And the weird thing is, there are a couple of times this guy loses his temper, can't keep it together when talking to the cops, has to be physically restrained from throwing a tantrum with food - it's ridiculous to beat us over the head with he can't, I know he can't, then show actually maybe he could. Anyway, there's also the YA like possible love triangle set up for later books, which again is so lazy to write, and these people are 40. It's crazy that our main character spends 30% of the book thinking about how hot the assf*ce detective is, 30% of the book constantly touching, hugging, squeezing the hand of, etc, our suspect, 20% promising her daughter she won't do anything dangerous even though she's constantly poking her nose in a murder investigation which is by it's very nature dangerous, and the other 20% annoying the detective with her detecting and just lying about how and why she's doing whatever she's caught doing instead of just explaining her train of thought which would show a logical progression. The whole thing is a mess and it's a shame because there could be a cute book in there. The only reason I would listen to this again would be to literally count how many times the main character says a variation of "I know he couldn't have done it" because it must be at least twenty. Ugh. The narrator did a good job.

Lady Emily Hardcastle is an eccentric widow with a secret past. Florence Armstrong, her maid and confidante, is an expert in martial arts. The year is 1908 and they've just moved from London to the country, hoping for a quiet life. But it is not long before Lady Hardcastle is forced out of her self-imposed retirement. There's a dead body in the woods, and the police are on the wrong scent. Lady Hardcastle makes some enquiries of her own, and it seems she knows a surprising amount about crime investigation...

Great Main Characters
Revisado: 05-26-24
I really enjoyed this. The two female main characters are so fun. They aren't in any way vapid or slapstick like. They're very good friends with great rapport and are smart and capable. The side characters are nice and behave like rational humans, not caricatures. The mysteries are good and even with that I didn't really care because I was enjoying the leads and just everything about the story just as much. By coincidence I listened to this immediately after another women's detectives book taking place in probably the exact same time frame also in the UK and while I liked that book, too, for different reasons, this was much more lively? almost. That's not the right word, but it just had like more joi de vivre. And I loved some of the more modern sayings and things that were introduced, like when Lady Hardcastle wanted to establish an idea of events as they occurred and was trying to figure out what to call it, and finally settled on "a time...line?" It was cute and occurred naturally, if you know what I mean. It was not forced or done with a wink, it just added to the fun. I also really liked the narrator. She reminded me of Mary Jane Wells. I would like to listen to this entire series.

Tight, tense, and packed with excitement! No director in radio could do more with 30 minutes than William Spier...and no half hour in radio could do more to keep you on the edge of your chair than Suspense!

Interesting, But Not As Fun As I'd Hoped
Revisado: 05-20-24
I'm still kind of undecided about this. I am so used to the more recent adaptations and full cast recordings of books from Jane Austen, Agatha Christie, and many others, which are usually 1 to 2 hours long, if not longer. They are able to give fully realized characters and stories in the radio program format. I didn't notice that each story here would only be 30 minutes minus short ads and introductions. Thirty minutes is enough time to tell a story but it's not enough time to know anything about the characters. It just kind of fell flat for me. I was excited to maybe find some new to me short story authors, and I really thought I'd love this, but I'm just not that into it. Sound quality can vary but it's good for it's age. The actors and production value are both excellent.
