Historia
Night. Sleep. Death. The Stars. is a gripping examination of contemporary America through the prism of a family tragedy: When a powerful parent dies, each of his adult children reacts in startling and unexpected ways, and his grieving widow in the most surprising way of all. Stark and penetrating, Joyce Carol Oates’s latest novel is a vivid exploration of race, psychological trauma, class warfare, grief, and eventual healing, as well as an intimate family novel in the tradition of the author’s best-selling We Were the Mulvaneys.

Cliché, boring
Revisado: 08-24-24
This book would have been at least 30% shorter if she hadn't been so repetitive. This seemed like the essay of a child who just discovered a thesaurus; constant statements like "he was surprised, in that it was unexpected and astounded". The characters seemed from an era decades before the 2010's. There was discussion of racial issues, but the main theme was adult children's childishness.

50 shades of a Hallmark movie
Revisado: 12-10-22
Cliche story line, bland characters. It seems like the author is trying to make a Hallmark version of 50 shades of grey.

I don't know what demographic this was targeted for, but listening to this made me feel like I was sitting in the back of the library for 5th grade story time. With the exception of 2 references to sex, this is definitely not an adult book. And the language made it seem like it was a middle or high schooler's essay. The dialog and narrative seemed like the author over-used a thesaurus. ("He placed a kiss upon her lips.") It didn't flow at all.

Ok
Revisado: 07-15-21
Overall, it was alright. I personally felt that way too much of the book was taken up by sex but that's just my taste.
My only peeve was the medical side of it, which is what drew me to the book in the first place. Most of the stuff seemed fine/ accurate. But with the one critical patient, I had to wonder if the author did any research or just based it on a bad TV show. A trauma patient that she determines is in "sinus arrhythmia" by listening and then that she must trach him because of it. With a plastic straw? That produces a hissing sound when inserted? Then administers subq heparin to help this bleeding trauma patient?? Who she then auscultates going into "V Tock"???? I try not to be a snob about medical entertainment being 100% accurate but WHAT?!

Couldn't finish
Revisado: 02-16-21
ED RN here, with past and current prehospital experience. This book was a huge eye roll for me. I stopped listening when the book turned into what seemed to be a huge ego stroke for the author. I tried to skip ahead, but was chapter after chapter, so I dumped it.

Nope
Revisado: 10-17-20
I really had to push myself to finish this. I don't like giving mediocre reviews, and much less bad reviews, but this book was rough. It was way too over-the-top. The plot was fine but the story itself made me think of a 15 year old trying to create the next Marvel film. I also did not care for the narrator. The "voices" were a bit ridiculous, to the point that some of his characters sounded like he was trying to mimic a voice changer/ disguiser.

Skip it.
Revisado: 01-31-20
I wish I didn't have the compulsion to finish anything I start because I'd have turned this in 1/4 of the way through. Tully is a selfish and manipulative "friend" and Kate is a pushover. It's not exactly a relationdship that I'd create to showcase friendship. To avoid potential spoilers, just know that the story is generally eye-rollingly cliche and ridiculously repetitive.

I really enjoyed this book. The only thing I can "complain" about is that there were obviously 2 narrators, and they at times changed back and forth mid-sentence.
