Really good overall story, weird emphasis on...

I really liked the story and found the characters engaging, but what is this author's fixation with fat people? The fat shaming is almost comically over the top. She describes a female character being size 16 as if it's a horrible moral failing. She repeatedly refers to her arms as being "meaty." It was weird and distracted from the narrative. I don't think I'd buy another book by the same author.

Leland Gaunt opens a new shop in Castle Rock called Needful Things. Anyone who enters his store finds the object of his or her lifelong dreams and desires: a prized baseball card, a healing amulet. This book and the performance were fantastic, but the interstitial music really takes away from the experience. It's loud, almost never matches the tone of the scene, and is totally unnecessary. Cheery video game style muzak plays during a murder scene that really didn't need it. Author's words are enough without that.

At first, I was worried this would be a hard story to follow without being able to flip back and reference earlier pages in a book, but I was so wrong. It works very well as an audio book, and the narrators performance makes it possibly one of the all time favorites.
