A wonderful way to hear the story of the Battle of Midway
Revisado: 04-28-25
I wish it had delved a bit more into the difficulties the airmen had on the attack - one of the characters should have been one of the dive bomber pilots who put the bomb into one of the carriers.

One of the better one in the series
Revisado: 06-10-23
A bit implausible at times and leaning on the stubbornness of downtime captains for the success of the Spanish more than once is a bit repetitious but it weaves action, romance and history so well. I just wish I knew which book was next!!!

Historia
A cosmic accident sets the modern town of Grantville, West Virginia, down in war-torn 17th-century Europe, and a new nation is forged. Now after carving a place for itself among the struggling powers of Western Europe, Grantville must throw up its eastern bulwarks against Dark Age domination. But the challenge for the down-time Eastern European horde is just as great: how to crawl out of a deeper feudal shadow than any in the West - and step into the light of freedom.

Finally back to the main story!
Revisado: 04-08-23
Finally. Finally! FINALLY!!! Back to the main characters and story. After all those prattling stories that could have been told in a single chapter in other books (except for the Italian set stories) we follow up on the Baltic War, formation of the USE and the rest. Back to Mike Sterns, Gustav Adolf and the rest. The only problem is that they are too lacking in military detail. What are the specs on the new airplanes and ships being built? Why is it taking the USE so long to mass produce breech loading rifled guns since the French beat them to it? But overall this and the next one are the best ones in the series in a long time!!! Enjoy!!!!

Historia
In the year 1635, the Rhineland is in turmoil. The impact of the Ring of Fire, the cosmic accident which transported the small modern West Virginia town of Grantville to Europe in the early 17th century, has only aggravated a situation that was already chaotic. Perhaps nowhere in central Europe did the Thirty Years' War produce so much upheaval as it did in the borderlands between France and Germany. Archbishop Ferdinand of Cologne shares the religious fanaticism of his older brother, Duke Maximilian of Bavaria.

Worst waste of time of the entire 1632 Saga yet!!
Revisado: 03-15-23
What a waste of time!! The events that move the 1632 saga forward could have been outlined in one, maybe two chapters in another book. The endless prattling of female characters, the countless Franzs, Ferdinands or Franz-Ferdiands that confuse the story, Explanations of familial relations that are forgotten as soon as you hit a period in a sentence. The performance of the narrator is, of course, familiar and excellent. But that is not enough to make this worth wasting your time with it.

Worst book of the series so far
Revisado: 09-05-22
This was a slog through book. Just not enjoyable at all and little mention of the events in Denmark in 1634. You make your way through it to an anticlimactic ending. About the best thing was the mooning at the end!! You can entirely skip this. I keep waiting to find out what is happening in the Baltic and with Cardinal Recelieu and in England after “The Baltic War” and I’m taken on this forgettable journey and now on to Italy in the Galileo book? Too expansive for me…… there were some chuckles in this book but enough to spend 16 hours on it. Pass.

Historia
New York Times best-selling author Eric Flint has received glowing critical praise for his Ring of Fire alternate history series. In this first installment, a West Virginia town is transported from the year 2000 to 1631 Germany at the height of the Thirty Years’ War. Thrust into conflict, the town residents must also contend with moral issues such as who should be considered a citizen.

Ok, not great…
Revisado: 07-12-22
I really wanted to love this series since there are so many sequels and it would be fun. It’s OK. Just OK. Actually enjoy it less after looking at a map and seeing that a 6 mile radius around Granville WV would encompass a lot of Morgantown, including the airport and the university,m, things that would come in handy in sequel 1633. Plus when I compare it to the “Island in the Sea of Time” trilogy, which goes back thousands of years earlier and yet is able to make guns and other weapons much, much quicker than this lot - what good is an M60 with three boxes of ammo? Sure, the characters are nice but you can spot the romances miles away and it’s the Americans just don’t have the advantages they should have. Also, any sane group would have locked down the libraries and books as soon as they realized what was going on as THAT was their advantage that they had to keep - and again, in 1633, it comes back to bite them. So, nice, but not awesome like “Island in the Sea of Time”.

Again takes liberties with the actual state of US readiness
Revisado: 06-08-22
Ok - so not bad - interesting premise and ok up until they start attacking the west coast and invading Alaska proper. It just strains credibility too much to say that it was only the US Naval strength that prevented the Japanese from air bombing of the West Coast In 1942. Land air power was still the major deterrent and that plus the distance was what prevented the Japanese fleet from setting up shop off the West Coast. That is without even trying to fight the assertion that American Subs were 100% ineffective, which is wrong - 50% maybe, but they did have some successes on 1942-3. That plus a formulaic love story which is almost lifted directly from his other books just made this a mild enjoy. The performance was excellent.

Denigrates the US capabilities in Europe to make a story
Revisado: 05-20-22
Conroy’s stories are incredibly detailed, well researched and suspenseful. But this story is predicated on a denigration of US capabilities in Europe in WWII. US AirPower commanded the skies and outside of the bad weather around the Battle of the Bulge would have made most of the events in the story impossible. US AirPower would never have allowed the Rhine Wall to be built and would have made the German retreat to behind it very very costly. The repeated lack of air support is ludicrous. It makes the story difficult to enjoy.

Historia
A trusted anesthesiologist, Dr. Roxanne Roth, is healing from the loss of her fiancé by consuming her time with work. It doesn’t hurt that her new love interest, Dr. Justin Kirkland, spends almost as much time at the hospital as she does. Entranced in the throes and complications of new love, Roxanne looks forward to work every day. Her time at the hospital would almost be cathartic if not for Dr. D. K. Webb, a neurosurgeon, who is quickly amassing a pile of complaints - and bodies.

Mediocre story, horrible narration
Revisado: 01-14-22
Ok - so who thought it was a good idea to have a female with a British accent do male voices from Memphis, TN? The narration here is horrible - from amazingly unprofessional editing (clearly there are parts that are re-recorded that have different sound quality and make it sound underwater) to having a narrator who is not very good at doing varied female voices, let along doing male ones. Sorry, but the men all sound like they were interviewed on a farm some where.
Then, the story. Mediocre at best. To have someone make it through all those years of neurosurgical training, some of the most demanding in the world, and THEN show themselves to be a sociopathic, drugged up killer? It would have shown up way, way earlier.
And hospitals don’t just give out privileges to a doctor in another state on a whim. There is a usual 45-60 day vetting process that occurs and you almost always uncover privileges at other hospitals, and, if they are not on the application, it is grounds to lose your license!!
The only thing that saves this book and let me be able to finish it at all with the horrible narration is a great character in Roxanne, interesting and (mostly accurate detail) about the anesthesia parts of it, and the loyalty the boyfriend (whose name escapes me).
Ok for a listen but be prepared for horrible narration.

Revisado: 12-13-21
This was an intriguing and enjoyable story that kept my interest. The narration, however, really sounded monotonous, almost computer like most of the time. And the ending is way, way too abrupt. But a fun, quick and engrossing listen….. the sum was defiantly more then the quality of the individual parts…
