Historia
February 1862. The Civil War is less than one year old. The fighting has begun in earnest, and the nation has begun to realize it is in for a long, bloody struggle. Meanwhile, President Lincoln’s beloved eleven-year-old son, Willie, lies upstairs in the White House, gravely ill. In a matter of days, despite predictions of a recovery, Willie dies and is laid to rest in a Georgetown cemetery. “My poor boy, he was too good for this earth,” the president says at the time. “God has called him home.”

A rousing triumph
Revisado: 05-07-25
A unique, hilarious, and astounding work of empathy, and an ode to the beauty of life and the gut-punch of loss. Reading this book was exhilarating and inspiring. I listened to the fantastic audiobook while reading along in the physical book, which was helpful given the uncommon structure and gave me the best of both worlds. Loved every moment of it.

Historia
Pearce Oysters, a lush, evocative, finely drawn debut novel set on the Louisiana coastline during the historic 2010 oil spill, follows the Pearce family, local oyster farmers whose business, family, and livelihood are all on the brink of collapse. Macro factors beyond their control are slaying them. Eye-opening, eco-fiction at its best, Pearce Oysters highlights the grit and beauty of lives lived in an overlooked corner of the American South and the interdependence of nature and man.

Remarkable and moving
Revisado: 11-15-24
I loved this book. Rich characters, vivid setting, compelling drama, and great narration. The Louisiana bayou landscape during the oil spill is described with haunting beauty. The characters will stay with me for a long time. Highly recommended.

Historia
On a sunny day in Berkeley, California, in 1942, a woman sees a sign in a post office window, returns to her house, and matter-of-factly begins to pack her family's possessions. Like thousands of other Japanese Americans, they have been reclassified virtually overnight as enemy aliens, and they are about to be uprooted from their home and sent to a dusty internment camp in the Utah desert.

Beautiful, lyrical, haunting
Revisado: 10-07-24
This is a masterful and lyrical exploration of the internment of Japanese Americans during WWII. Through skillful use of point of view, the author explores this unimaginable chapter in American history through the eyes of multiple characters, including two young children. The whole novel almost feels like one long poem, gently gathering momentum until you realize you’re moving at breakneck speed.

Historia
In the nine masterful stories that comprise Thrillville, USA, debut author Taylor Koekkoek depicts Americans living on the margins of society, seeking escape from isolation and underemployment in drugs, booze, and self-destructive relationships. While the action is set largely in the rural Pacific Northwest, the characters’ malaise and disaffectedness is endemic of the country as a whole. The title takes its name from the aforementioned amusement park, but Thrillville is as much a state of mind as an actual place.

Brilliant stories

I loved every single one of these beautiful, funny, heartbreaking stories. The characters are vivid, the dialogue sharp, the sentences crackling. My goodness, what a remarkable book. The three readers do a great job, and I couldn’t stop listening.

Historia
Andrea Elliott follows eight dramatic years in the life of Dasani, a girl whose imagination is as soaring as the skyscrapers near her Brooklyn shelter. In this sweeping narrative, Elliott weaves the story of Dasani’s childhood with the history of her ancestors, tracing their passage from slavery to the Great Migration north. As Dasani comes of age, New York City’s homeless crisis has exploded, deepening the chasm between rich and poor. She must guide her siblings through a world riddled by hunger, violence, racism, drug addiction, and the threat of foster care.

What an important work of journalism and literature. The scope of the project is incredible, delving into the lives of numerous people to capture their stories and struggles. After reading about their lives over the course of many years, I feel close to them and am grateful for it.
