Historia
When they meet in the 1930s, Doris and Tup’s love is immediate. They marry quickly and Doris commits to the only life Tup ever wanted: working the Senter family farm. Soon their first child, Sonny, is born and Doris and Tup understand they are blessed. More children arrive - precocious, large-hearted Dodie and quiet, devoted Beston - but Doris and Tup take nothing for granted. When an unimaginable tragedy turns the family of five into a family of four, everything the Senters held faith in is shattered.

A Nice Surprise
Revisado: 02-03-25
I wasn’t sure what to expect. I’m currently reading books by Maine authors, or books set in Maine, and this book was recommended. This is a tale told so, so slowly. I thought I would need to bail. But once the story and the characters got into my head, I could not stop listening. It’s a fascinating story of a family that goes seriously off the rails after a terrible tragedy— beautifully considered and written.

When the Performance Gets in the Way
Revisado: 11-20-24
The story was not what I expected— less lighthouse and more chick lit romance and melodrama. Still, the story wasn’t completely terrible. The performance, unfortunately, was completely terrible. Isn’t there an English saying about over-egging the pudding? That was what was going on in the reading, to the point that every long, ragged, emotional-filled breath could actually be heard. It was like listening to a soap opera, a really bad soap opera.

Completely Ridiculous Story
Revisado: 10-28-24
The story made no sense, and was laughable. It felt like a really cheap way of making one book into two. I like Bob Hoon as a character, though. He may be the king of expletives, but he’s entertaining.

Historia
Photographer Isla Wilson is thrilled she's landed her dream job, but the clients who hired her are getting stranger by the day. It sounded so perfect—a month's assignment at the lush Scottish Highlands property of architect Alban McGregor, and his wife, Jessica. But in the woods, there's a playhouse with a chilling history. Two years ago, the McGregors' daughter Elodie was abducted and then died in that playhouse. The townspeople insist her abductor had to be a stranger in their town. Alban refuses to knock the playhouse down, even keeping a picture of it on his wall.

What?
Revisado: 05-30-23
The first half of this story is fairly good. And then it went completely off the rails. I like stories with a few twists and turns, but this was so totally ridiculous. The story also became tedious. The only reason I finished was because I was curious about how bad it would get. It was worse than I thought it would be. A waste of time.

Disappointing
Revisado: 02-17-23
I was drawn in by the rave reviews and the promise of a dark and twisted story. While it was dark and twisted, and well written, the villains of the story are just way too cliche. I won't give away any spoilers, but, for those who read books like this, the bad guys were not hard to spot-- most of them, at least. I expected something more interesting.

Historia
Convicted serial killer Benjamin Fisher has finally offered to lead San Bernardino detective Daniel Ellis to the isolated graves of his victims. One catch: he'll only do it if FBI profiler Reni Fisher, his estranged daughter, accompanies them. As hard as it is to exhume her traumatic childhood, Reni can’t say no. She still feels complicit in her father’s crimes.

Good, but
Revisado: 12-10-22
The story has an interesting premise. It’s well paced and has a cast of compelling characters. The problem is: to create a dramatic ending, almost all of the characters make very questionable decisions that put them in danger. Disappointing.

Historia
Olivia McAfee knows what it feels like to start over. Her picture-perfect life—living in Boston, married to a brilliant cardiothoracic surgeon, raising their beautiful son, Asher—was upended when her husband revealed a darker side. She never imagined that she would end up back in her sleepy New Hampshire hometown, living in the house she grew up in and taking over her father’s beekeeping business. Lily Campanello is familiar with do-overs, too. When she and her mom relocate to Adams, New Hampshire, for her final year of high school, they both hope it will be a fresh start.

Too Long, Too Implausible, Too Many TED Talks
Revisado: 11-28-22
I had high hopes for this book, but it was a big disappointment. The story is too long. It drags in parts and information is repeated. And, there were too many completely unbelievable aspects of the story— a high school student in NH is arrested for murder and his surgeon father at Mass General doesn’t hear about it??? The defense lawyer goes to court without ever talking to the guy who did the autopsy?? I don’t think so.
Finally, the story contains just too many TED talks, places where characters find ways of “teaching “ the reader about transgender issues. There are important issues, to be sure, but I had expected these talented novelists to weave that information more seamlessly into the story instead of relying on the various mini TED talks scattered throughout the story.

Abuzz
Revisado: 12-02-21
It’s a little slow to start, but once the story settles in, it’s quite a ride. I laughed. I cried. I gasped several times.
I am amazed, and gratified, by the author’s ability to carry multiple story lines, in such a deft and delicate way. She does a fine job at holding a large array of characters in the vast landscape of the Outlander world.
I just hope that the next installment takes significantly less than seven years!

Don't. Just don't.
Revisado: 04-19-21
This book is riddled with problems. It's too long (for what it is). It's meandering. It just doesn't make any sense, but at the same time, it's predictable. I thought it might turn into a fun, campy thing. But, it didn't. In the end, it just felt like a waste of time.
