Mixed Feelings.....
Revisado: 03-19-23
Unusual storyline I haven't come across before this author, so.... pretty stoked actually to see this from the average tropes.
1. Narrator: the one thing I've learned since becoming a beloved audible customer, is that the Narrator makes or breaks a story. Their voice has to fit, or they must have the ability to use a distinctive voice for each character. In this instance, her voice doesn't fit the young woman, the young ENGLISH woman. She needs a lighter voice, idk the musical terminology to describe what i'm thinking: tenor or soprano, etc...
The natural talking voice of this narrator is deeper, older, gruffer, you can tell this. Her male voices all sound the same. Occasionally i can hear an attempt at a British accent. I also had to increase the narration speed as the original pacing was too slow and pedantic sounding.
2. Misogynist: the backstory of the Mc has only 3 (sister, ex-wife, ex-fiancé) for all of his 38yrs. The 4th is just a Friend. But this is enuf to form an absolutely horrible opinion of an entire half of the human race. The author is making this man too unlikable, too blind, too qik to lump her with her brother in all things.
3. Timing: the author had the Mc not give any thought to a possible child from his short-term marriage to the Fc, not for the whole 6yrs. did he consider conjugal rights might have produced one. Then as soon as its brot to his attention, he cant see any other course but to pressure the Fc.
4. The Fc signs the Affidavit without the author showing the Fc being smart before signing by having her lawyer review it, by having stipulations placed in giving her equal rights or at least, legal consultation in his care. As of her signing, acknowledging his parentage, she no longer has any other parental rights herself.
After thinking about this more, maybe I dont have as much mixed feelings about this book as i thought.
5. Then, abruptly, he cant stop thinking about her, jealously not wanting other men around her....
you know what...nevamind, sum will like it, mayb sum won't. Yall decide, although I don't change my mind about the narrator!...yeesh!

Had Loose Ends, but Overall, I'd Recommend...
Revisado: 11-23-22
*Ok, so first, where is Kevin Dugan. luv'd that he had helped her grandmother in her time of need.
*Why'd her grandfather do those things, betrayed his granddaughter that way. no reason given, maybe in the 2nd bk. idk
No Spoiler's coming up i dont think:
Those were biggest for me, so...the narrator is not new to me. I think she did a better job in the The Hunter series by Mercedes Lackey. she differentiated all the characters very well there. Here, not so much. Still a decent job, jus could have been better. my personal preference would have been Marcella Riordan, who narrated, Murder in Thrall, by Anne Cleeland. Oh man she had that wonderful Irish accent down pat and could move between various characters seamlessly.
So, I've read a Traveller romance once, her research fits well with that, so no issue with author's research there.
Luv'd Wilco, actually have several bks and audibles featuring K9 partners bc i luv that specific genre so much. Showing that dogs get traumatized too in war, that was great. what wasn't was the fact that the author didn't at least mention the resources that are available (whether the character uses it or not) to combat vet's. Injured or not, diagnosed with PTSD or not. They offer job search assistance too. and dont think they leave the pups out, there are vet services for combat dogs too. those are limited and specific to certain areas near military bases but still, they're there.
not so much on a romance basis, that's for those that might want more of that. brief, very brief, intimacy with Dugan. Well, maybe not intimacy, ok yes, changed my mind, sharing her traumatic past culd be considered an emotional as well as their brief physical intimacy, which the author didnt go into alot of detail, so for those who dont like that, say for instance the way Laurell K. Hamilton can in her books, dont worry.
So, Plot's good, Pacing slow in beginning, when it sped up 3/4s in, her abitlity to defend herself was a 2 out of 5 in my opinion, especially considering Marine basic training, then the additional training for their specialty, as well as military usually offer more hand to hand defense training if desired, after those two prerequisites. so the author's action sequence wasnt believable there, on how the fmc defended herself, plus, when she discovered all this info due to Wilco, not once did it occur to her to pull out her cell, either to call the Sheriff, or document what she found by pic's, video recording, ANYTHING??
So of course she's discovered, surprised, overpowered, and drugged. Really?!!!?
And where was Wilco? Author didnt mention what the dog did, or if the Perp did something to him or if he tuk off or anything. next we the reader know, Wilco is coming with the Sheriff, after all the action tuk place. so there's that.....
Yall it's still a gud story, didnt give too much away i hope, just spoke about specific issues related to structure.
Good Reading and Listening yall.

I can get thru the story as its gud enuf 2 put u there action wise, but the narrator chose a tone that's way 2 soft 4 the female MC. Definitely not authoritative enuf for her background & position .

Sorry Narrator. ...but dang U Suck.
Revisado: 09-07-17
She reads like a middle schooler having 2 read her report in front of the class.
But the story is so freaking interesting! I only blame the author if he didn't listen 2 a sample of her work b4 hiring her.
And dang it.....yes I'll get the nex one bcause, again the story itself is entertaining.
if u've ever heard Davina Porter who reads the Outlander series , u'll better understand why I feel jipped with this narrator. Also hear Heather Wilds, who reads the Lady Darby Mysteries. ..awesome 4 both those females !
On the male side is Dick Hill who is the voice of Jack Reacher, Ray Porter for the Joe Ledger series, damn he's GOOD!
