Historia
The Interdependency, humanity’s interstellar empire, is on the verge of collapse. The Flow, the extra-dimensional conduit that makes travel between the stars possible, is disappearing, leaving entire star systems stranded. When it goes, human civilization may go with it - unless desperate measures can be taken. Emperox Grayland II, the leader of the Interdependency, is ready to take those measures to help ensure the survival of billions. But nothing is ever that easy.

Frustrating Narrator
Revisado: 03-09-25
I love Scalzi’s work, and this book has a decent plot and good pacing. I can’t imagine how much better this might have been with a better narrator. Wheaton can”t convey a female voice, much less two females having a discussion, so I’ll need to read it to myself to get the “Scalzi Effect”. Everyone “sounds” like enthusiastic Participants in a Trivia Match. Tiring.

Historia
Mimi is a "waste girl". A member of the lowest caste on Silicon Isle, located off China’s southeastern coast, and home to the world’s largest electronic waste recycling center. There, thousands of miles from home, Mimi struggles to earn a living for her family and dreams of a better life. Luo Jincheng is the head of one of three clans who run the island, a role passed down from his father and grandfather before him. As the government enforces tighter restrictions, Luo in turn tightens the reins on the waste workers in his employ. Ruthlessness is his means of survival.

Elegant, brutal sci fi noir
Revisado: 09-09-24
I agree with all the comparisons to Snow Crash and Wind-Up Girl (a great compliment). The structure and pacing are excellent, the plot is eco-dystopian relevant and the writing is masterful. This author has “it”. Looking forward to more.

Historia
The Martian meets Gravity when Army Pilot Vaughn Singleton, Earth’s last man, rushes to Area 51 in search of a spaceplane after he discovers the last woman is stranded on the International Space Station and barely alive - thus beginning a race against time. The event that wiped life from the planet started at the supercollider. It created a rift in space-time. The astronaut stranded aboard the space station, Commander Angela Brown, is a theoretical physicist who used to work at the collider.

Very light in terms of science. And seriously, misogynists will love this tale. Can’t grasp mice reproduction in zero gravity but yeah.

Historia
This is the way the world ends...for the last time. It starts with the great red rift across the heart of the world's sole continent, spewing ash that blots out the sun. It starts with death, with a murdered son and a missing daughter. It starts with betrayal, and long dormant wounds rising up to fester. This is the Stillness, a land long familiar with catastrophe, where the power of the earth is wielded as a weapon. And where there is no mercy.

Shockingly Outstanding
Revisado: 01-16-22
The book folds like origami; line by line revealing plot lines with stunning episodic crescendos and twists. The author’s writing style fondly brings to mind Bone People by Keri Hulme. This is a great compliment.
Sci fi at its lyrical best. Operatic scope of time as explained from the perspective of half a lifetime. It conveys a Grand Canyon’s worth of ideas and peoples.
Utterly brilliant.

Overrated
Revisado: 07-04-21
I love sci fi, but have never cared for this book. Gave it another chance; still dislike it. The narrator speakers three syllables then pauses, for hours. It’s torture. Plot line is thin, cast is miserable. So glad it’s over.

Historia
Neal Stephenson is a blazing new force on the sci-fi scene. With the groundbreaking cyberpunk novel Snow Crash, he has "vaulted onto the literary stage." It weaves virtual reality, Sumerian myth, and just about everything in between with a cool, hip cybersensibility - in short, it is the gigathriller of the information age.

Stephenson's Best Ending!!
Revisado: 07-26-19
Really outstanding, and crazy to see how he predicts the future so astoundingly well and plausibley. The plot is RICH; the infodumps are perfect in quant and qual, and IMHO, herein you will find his best ever character development . I was actually sad that it had to end. Solid narration, great accents!! Read it, listen to it, and think about which sovereign franchise you would be a member of....

Historia
On the day the government decrees that women are no longer allowed more than 100 words daily, Dr. Jean McClellan is in denial. This can't happen here. Not in America. Not to her. This is just the beginning. Soon women are not permitted to hold jobs. Girls are no longer taught to read or write. Females no longer have a voice. Before, the average person spoke 16,000 words a day, but now women only have 100 to make themselves heard. But this is not the end. For herself, her daughter, and every woman silenced, Jean will reclaim her voice.

Nowhere near the quality of Atwood. YA fiction with rated R moments, which is too bad as it might have been great for high school level discussion.

Good stuff. A complex storyboard made easy to follow by a skilled writer. Space, dystopian future, clones, AI, guppies. the list goes on. Nessecity and its cousin Invention, or how we deal with bad stuff and come out better if we aren't killed by weird parasites or resource hungry alien tech...

Historia
We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.
