Historia
13 Acorns is the debut work of up-and-coming American author G. Edward Martin. It is composed of twelve original short stories written in multiple genres beneath the umbrella of philosophical fiction. Each unique story addresses one central idea or moral question, with each story being akin to a single acorn—something small or simple with the potential to grow enormous. The False Treeing Hound- Daniel, a lost young man, abandons everything and sets out on a road-trip headed west.

A book of thoughtful short stories
Revisado: 03-12-25
This was an interesting collection of short stories. I liked the different genres, and I especially enjoyed the first sci-fi story and the one about the dragon. The author obviously has a great imagination. Each story has a moral or physiological bent that makes you think. Some of these work better than others. I appreciated the chance to listen to this book.

Historia
When you live in your car the way 18-year-old Eddie and his sister, Maya, do, the rules are pretty simple: lay low, trust no one, and make sure you have plenty of duct tape on hand. But Maya is growing up fast. She's forgetting how to play the game, and Eddie is finding it harder and harder to keep them both safe from the outside world. When their lives suddenly become complicated through a mistake Maya makes, Eddie begins to lose his composure. And why wouldn't he? He hasn't had time to address his own emotional wounds.

A heartbreakingly beautiful coming of age story!
Revisado: 12-26-23
This book has some trigger warnings needed, SA and PA. It shows how vulnerable homeless children are. It also shows the resilience of the spirit and how people can overcome amazingly difficult things. I loved Eddie and how hard he worked to care for his sister Mia. He tried so hard. But there will always be bullies and Eddie and Mia face many in this book.
They also face people who give them hope, friendship and ultimately love. It's a great example of the arch of the universe bending toward justice.
The author uses quotes from Picasso throughout the book which I found delightful. I never knew Picasso said so many deep things. The book is well-written and read beautifully by the narrator. It kept my interest from start to finish. It was ultimately heartwarming, but you had to earn the ending. A good book which I highly recommend!

A stunning family saga
Revisado: 11-10-23
This book is a five-course meal, not fast food. The author relates her mother's memories of Italy during WWII and does it beautifully. The characters come alive, a harsh and exacting mother, a warm and loving father, poverty, war, and hope. What I love best about this book is that I learned things I did not know about Italy during WWII. I had no idea that the war caused a civil war between those Italians who supported Hitler and those who did not. I had no idea there was also an Italian Holocaust, with around fifty thousand Italians killed most of them from poor peasant families. There is no such thing as History, only Histories. It is important that we learn about all the ways different people were affected by war so as not to repeat it.
The other thing I loved about this book was being part of this family. These people will stay with me for a long time.
Also, Nancy Peterson did a fantastic job of narrating this story. Her ability to do the accents and pronounce the names and foods made it feel very realistic. It was like her voice was made for this story. Exceptional all the way around.

Historia
Bad things happen in threes; at least, that's what Annie Fullerton has always believed. And the way her life is shaping up, she feels like the proverbial poster girl! Her career as an up-and-coming sous chef has gone up in smoke, she's lost her beloved pet, and then her roommate, Danica, has betrayed her in the worst possible way. It's the straw that breaks the camel's back. I mean, come on! A person can only take so much!

A fun enjoyable read
Revisado: 10-27-23
I needed a break from the heaviness of the world and I decided to listen to this book. I enjoyed every moment of it. It's read by the author and Carol Ann is a wonderful narrator. She brought the characters to life and with every one that had an accent she was able to do it. I enjoyed the settings which were well described and the characters who were funky and memorable. The descriptions of food made me really hungry and I wondered if the author is also a good cook. I highly recommend this book to anyone who longs for something fun and simple and enjoyable.
This book is for grown ups and has a lot of language but if you're looking for an excellent book for middle to high school students I would encourage you to read this author's book, The Peculiar Language of Llamas. It's one of the funniest most enjoyable books I've ever listened to.

Best middle grade fantasy I've listened this year.
Revisado: 06-10-23
I loved everything about the story. It reminded me of The City of Ember, or The Giver, where there's a society with a lot of rules that supposedly keep the society running but are actually detrimental. I love the magic system that the author created and his characters that grow over time. I love the constant battles they had to face to get to their quest destination. The author did not spare the main character hardships at all, but that overcoming attitude was very inspiring. I highly recommend this to anyone age 11 and up.

Lindy Johnson, private investigator, has always had the insatiable desire to solve puzzles. But while she's quick to learn everyone else's secrets, she's careful to keep her own private life guarded. Diagnosed with multiple sclerosis five years ago, she does her best to keep that side of her life concealed, unwilling to let others see her internal weaknesses. It makes for a lonely life, but isolation has never been something that bothered her—at least it didn't used to.

Loved it!
Revisado: 03-25-23
This but grabbed my attention and didn't let go. It wasa fast-paced detective novel with a strong female lead.
I would highly recommend it. I did have trouble when the detective continued to make decisions that put herself in terrible danger and I found myself yelling at the audio "Call the police already! Ask for help!"
But that happens a lot with this genre so I think it's acceptable. The only real problem I had with this book was the cover. It's a beautiful book and deserves a beautiful cover. But the cover is so dark I can't tell what it's supposed to be. Other than that I highly recommend it.

Noah Ramirez thinks he’s an expert on romance. He has to be for his popular blog, the Meet Cute Diary, a collection of trans happily ever afters. There’s just one problem - all the stories are fake. What started as the fantasies of a trans boy afraid to step out of the closet has grown into a beacon of hope for trans listeners across the globe.

Laughed out loud a few times!
Revisado: 03-23-23
I enjoyed this book. I liked the idea of a blogger who makes up meet cute stories, getting to live a fake, and a real meet cute.
I liked the humor.
Norah was too self centered to be a likable main character but did grow some. I wish he'd grown more. Devon was darling but over the top codependent. All in all, pretty accurate for teens. It was a great pick for the trans rights readathon and I recommend this to any nonbinary teen. Everyone deserves a love story.
