Great Start on a new Renegade Universe Series

The book is set following the events of the Renegade Star series, but it doesn't rely on pre-existing knowledge and sets itself up fairly quickly. This is essentially a found family story in the vein of Farscape, and that includes alien crew. It has a unique tone, at times funny, at times somber, but always moving forward with a story that logically and organically builds on itself. That's an increasingly rare thing in the genre, where too often grand high-concept ideas are wrapped around contrivances, and for that I'm grateful and feel it deserves 5 stars. Looking forward to the continuing story of Cole and crew.

Chaney brings us another trippy cyberpunk adventure in the follow up to Sol Arbiter. Like the first book, it's a slow burn that eventually becomes a wildfire before too far in. We learn more about the characters that were introduced in the previous book and meet a couple new faces that I have no doubt will pop up again. Where this book really stands out is it's exploration of technology and the impact on society. Without giving anything away, there's a twist comparable to the first book that changed how I interpreted the entire story.

This series explores the more street-level parts of the Renegade Star universe, giving us a more fleshed out idea of how people in the Deadlands live. Good start to a series.

R.C. Bray is a fixture in audiobooks, so it's likely that if you were brought to this book by his name you'll enjoy it. His performance is, as ever, outstanding. The book's content, if you are expecting something similar to traditional military scifi, may surprise you, but I say this simply as a heads-up and not as a criticism. Christopher Hopper is mostly known for fantasy, and that background is apparent here. Without spoiling the narrative, there are several elements that make Ruins of the Galaxy more space fantasy like Star Wars than military scifi like Babylon 5. That doesn't mean there isn't overlap between the two, and the book strikes a reasonable balance, though it will err on the side of fantasy.

The presentation similarly feels more like Star Wars than Starship Troopers, which initially seemed to me a bad idea. By the middle of the book, however, I understood that it is intended to be approachable by all ages, a rare thing in military scifi. I think that's commendable, even if it means fans of the genre don't get all the usual grit and hyper-violence they're used to. Again, this isn't a criticism of the book, just a heads-up.

Overall, Ruins of the Galaxy is a solid introduction into military scifi for people new to the genre and young scifi fans not quite mature enough for typical content.

A love letter to 80s action

I didn't know Ray Porter before this book, but its easy to see why he's so popular. His narration fits the tone and style perfectly, capturing the delicate balance of cheeze and awesome that defined the 80s action movies this book calls back to.

That's not to suggest it's a superficial dressing like in Ready Player One; The Last Reaper truly feels like Escape From New York because it touches on the same human fears and hopes, not because it makes shallow references. Cain is a capable operator faced with overwhelming odds in complex so full of danger even the concrete bleeds a sense of menace. Couple that with themes of transhumanism and you have a unique take on a classic sci-fi adventure.
