Historia
In the near future of Robert Charles Wilson's Last Year, the technology exists to open doorways into the past - but not our past, not exactly. Each "past" is effectively an alternate world, identical to ours but only up to the date on which we access it. And a given "past" can be reached only once. After a passageway is open, it's the only road to that particular past; once closed, it can't be reopened.

Clever Premise, Well-Developed
Revisado: 01-08-25
'Last Year' is an excellent example of what I love about Robert Charles Wilson's work: it has a fabulous & clever underlying premise (time-travel as a tourism industry), and believable characters that you really care about. As expected, he also treats us to a satisfying conclusion.

A Sleeper SF Masterpiece
Revisado: 10-22-24
Wow, Backburn was a most satisfying and entertaining conclusion (so far?) to this 5-Star series. In this book, Vaillencourt unveils an Asimov-worthy greater meaning underlying the events of the entire series. I don't understand why the books in this series haven't yet attained blockbuster status! A BIG congratulations to the author on this significant and lasting contribution to the body of SF literature!

Historia
It takes a brave soul to mess with Dockside. Roland Tankowicz has made a career out of teaching this lesson, and the galaxy is starting to notice. Yet despite filling entire graveyards with corporate raiders, pirates, criminal organizations, and the occasional marauding cybernetic psychopath, somebody out there still thinks the lucrative district is worth harassing.

A Seminal Work In AI Sci-Fi
Revisado: 10-14-24
Wow! Andrew Vaillencourt has become one of my favorite authors. His writing style has just the right balance of descriptive prose, action and comedy. The entire Fixer series has wonderful characters and compelling story lines. So far, Head Space is my favorite in the series, which is saying a lot.

Great Plot, Wonderful Characters
Revisado: 09-18-20
I don't usually get excited about "Super-Hero" stories but this one grabbed me right away. I enjoyed the story's perspective, as narrated by the young adult who embarks on an amazing adventure.

A New, Original SciFi Dilemma
Revisado: 09-06-20
Bottom line: I'm impressed w/ this plot & highly recommend it to SF fans!
Pros. 1) The fate of humanity was at stake in an *original* & compelling manner. This is an impressive achievement for the author; there are only so many ways to spin standard SF themes.
2) To my knowledge, the initial source of tension
(displayed in the cover art; I'm being vague to avoid spoilers) is also original.
3) I enjoyed the intellectual nature of the challenges faced. Top-level: how to save humanity against impossible odds? Details: how to communicate in code under omnipotent surveillance (think: Asimov's, "I, Robot")? The author serves up satisfying solutions!
4) This takes place in the future. The several references to present-day SF pop culture were fun/playful :-D
Con. Greater character development wd have vaulted this book into a SF classic.
Yes, I connected w/ the protagonist, and appreciated the handling of the military lead. However, I found myself "wanting more" w/ pretty much every significant character (including the military lead). The romance could have been a compelling subplot. More backstory/concerns of the key players wd have helped readers empathize even more w/ the wonderful tension created in the story.
Regardless, SF fans will appreciate this original & well-conceived storyline.
