An amazing audiobook for fans of fantasy & LitRPG!

James Hunter's work has been on my wishlist for quite some time, so I knew I was interested in the sort of thing he writes. I'd read one of eden Hudson's books and was very impressed with her writing talent. I decided that I wanted to try out the LitRPG genre as I used to play RPG games and read Fantasy novels in my youth, not to mention many years of playing World of Warcraft. So this title seemed like it would be a good one to try. Wow, am I glad that I tried it.
The fantasy world drew me in with it's rich world and character building to the point I was ready to continue in that world and would have been content if the RPG elements never happened. But they did happen, and they brought with them a really engrossing world with well established rules and interesting characters. There was a lot of fun as I recognized the RPG tropes, I grew to love all of the characters and was eager to follow their stories. Nick Podehl brought this well crafted story to life with enthusiasm and talent. Have no doubt, this is a top-notch audiobook. I'm eager to hear the story continue.

It's the end of the world as we know it

Just when you thought things couldn't get any worse, Brian Keene returns to what's left of the world from “The Rising” to torture his characters again. There is a beacon of hope for our characters, but it is the zombie apocalypse, so don't expect everyone to make to the end alive. I enjoyed Keene's fresh take on zombies in the first book, and they are just as despicable and disgusting in this one. While still a very personal tale for the survivors, the scope is much bigger in this sequel. If you enjoyed the first book, you'll definitely find more of what you liked here. Including a cast of familiar characters faithfully brought to life once again by Joe Hempel.

Character driven fantasy, adventure w/ anime flair

Fates Aflame spent a lot of the early part of the book setting up the relationships between the characters and introducing you to this original sci-fi world. It was a little bit of a slow start, but well worth sticking with it. You get to know and understand the characters so you are really attached to them when the action starts. I have to say, I really enjoyed the flashback sequence, and it was especially good with the performance that the narrator brought to that scene.

Now to the really good stuff. This book has great fantasy action sequences that should appeal to fans of not only fantasy, but video games, and anime.

Not only are there classic mythological creatures, but plenty of new creatures that are well thought out and described in detail. The author has created a wonderful, original world. This book had it all; hidden lands, lost cities, elemental powers, magical swords, sci-fi weapons, and spacecraft. The action scenes were really well done, and brought to life with a great reading by the author. Overall, an enjoyable story, that was well written. I'll be eagerly awaiting the next one in the series.

The Rising breathes new life into the undead

I had the pleasure of meeting Brian Keene about a year ago, but I had never read the story that put him on the map. Luckily, this newly recorded version of the Author's Preferred Edition was just released and I was able to listen to it despite my busy schedule. With the proliferation of zombie-everything these days, it is hard to stand out from the crowd, but I found this story still (despite originally being released in 2003) held plenty of surprises and twists that were unique and unexpected. It's a gritty world that you really don't want to live in, and the zombies are a far worse threat that any others I have seen. Without any spoilers, I'll say that the story plays out as both sci-fi and horror, touching on characters from very different walks of life to make for an interesting, if bleak, experience. Joe Hempel did a great job of bringing the diverse characters to life... even the undead ones.

Frank's Magical Mystery Tour

Frank's adventures are out of this world as he encounters a diverse collection of gods, including some of the elder variety. He is once again with many of the characters from the previous books, both friends and foes (their alliances often changing). This third book in the series goes beyond the usual urban fantasy and deals with the metaphysical and the stakes couldn't get any higher with the fate of all of reality hanging in the balance. Hempel once again makes Frank a likable character, as well as bringing other more unique characters to life, like the golem with his very recognizable speech pattern.

Frank's excellent extra-dimensional adventure

If you enjoyed Heart of Gold, then you'll be happily reunited with the cast as their magical battles continue. It had been months since I'd listened to the first book in the series, but hearing Joe Hempel bring the characters to life helped quickly ease me back into Frank Butcher's world. As always this series has twists and turns, don't expect things to be as they seem... and don't expect Frank to have an easy time!
