Worthy sequel to a dark horror tale

Ive been a big Jeff Strand fan the last few years. Ive listened to or read all of his adult books, some of them multiple times. All of his adult books except Pressure and Deathless. Im not sure exactly what kept me from finishing pressure. Im a hugh horror fan and I dont mind consuming uncomfortable things, however for some reason I couldnt get myself to finish pressure.

After listening to both Pressure and Deathless I think I have it figured out. I see Jeff Strand as doing horror comedy, and this series of books is just horror. The main charachter reminds me a bit of Andrew Mayhem, except without the funny ha ha moments. It threw me off and kept me from consuming these last two books by the author.

Had I not had the opportunity to listen to the audiobool for free, for an honest review I may still have had Pressure on my To Read list.

Deathless is a worthy follow up to pressure. A little less serious, and somehow a little more dark. Well written as all his books are. An enjoyable read all in all. Definitly a must read for someone loooing for a unique horror tale to consume.

Why all the hate?

I just logged into my account to give this book a 2nd listen and saw the 3 star rating. Yikes. Well I love all books Konrath. if youve listened to or read the previous 8 novels then theres no reason you wouldnt find this rediculously amusing. On the otherhand if this is your 1st or 2nd Konrath listen, Id recommend starting with Book 1, then go ahead and give Book 2 a try. If that does it for you, 3 would be the next logical step. This is book 10. Most can be read as stand alone, but theres soo many cross over characters in the last few books you may find yourself lost or not caring about specfic plot pieces, without reading the others.

Not my favorite Jeff Strand book

This past year or two Ive become a pretty big Jeff Strand fan. Ive managed to listen to or read every book hes put out fhat isnt a short story collection. Ive listened to the Andrew Mayhem series twice and Bring Her Back 3 times. This is basically unheard of for me. Ill reconsume a few cherished book series every 5 years or so, but almost never re-read anything. Anyways, on a sliding scale of his work this book is subpar. When compared to 90% of the other books I read and listen to, this is a solid 4 stars. It seemed a bit rushed and the dark humor Im used to experiencing seemed a bit lacking. Still Ill be spending another credit on the next book he pushes out.

Took me a while to get through this one.

I honestly gave up on this book about halfway through. Had I not recieved the book for review I probably wouldnt have gone back to it. I'm glad I did though because the last quarter of the book tied it all together well. It wasnt the greatest audio experience I've had, however I'd give the author another try.

The old man wasnt right, but he wasnt wrong either

This third installment in 'The Waiting Mortuary' series is yet another departure from the original. I'm kinda seeing the series as a sort of anthology at this point. You have the story revolve around the waiting mortuary, but most the characters change, leaving the story plenty of room to evolve. I'm not going to go into specifics, however where as the 1st book was more down to earth, this book is very supernatural. I would recommend the story and the series to a horror fan.

A Mysterious and Engaging Sequel

Book 2 marks a distinct departure from its predecessor, emerging as an entirely unique experience. Newcomers can dive right into this sequel without feeling adrift. Unlike the original's dark ambiance, this installment weaves a tapestry of mystery. There were moments where I found myself retracing chapters, thinking I must have missed something, only to discover that patience would have alleviated my confusion. The book was engaging enough that I finished it in a day. While my personal preference leans towards the first book, this sequel enriches the overarching enigma of the waiting mortuary.

VHS like anthology

Ireceived this book complimentary in exchange for an honest review. Generally, anthologies and short stories aren't my preference, and had I been more attentive to the book's description, I might not have chosen it. However, to my pleasant surprise, the book captivated me by the end. It resonated with a strong VHS anthology feel, particularly with a Christmas theme. The first half of the book was decent, neither outstanding nor disappointing. The second half, however, was quite impressive. The final story, in particular, stood out and would translate exceptionally well into a video format. The narrator's delivery was well-suited to the characters, enhancing the overall experience.

Horror light with some heart

Interesting story that i finished in a single sitting. I wouldnt say it was creepy or scary, but it was definitly a horror story. It had some slasher light vibes and another horror trope / twist that I wont elaborate on. Unlike alot of the horror fiction I consume, the author can actually write and there were points in the story that I found surprisingly deep. While this free book was supposed to be background noise for the day while I repotted a few dozen plants, I found myself becoming more and more invested in its ending. The narrator was spot on aswell. A suprisingly good listen.

4 on a sliding scale. If you like slasher movies.

I grew up with and love slasher movies. Dont ask me to explain why.... for either of those statements. I honestly have no idea. Anyways Im always looking out for slasher like books. The closest thing Ive found, generally lays in the splatterpunk catagory of horror. Generally if I listen to one of those, Ill find myself skipping thru large portions (splatterpunk usually has graphic sexualixed torture). I dont really consider myself a prude, but I rarely enjoy splatterpunk. This story is more like a proper B slaher movie. Just theres violence and you could kinda sorta call it graphic, but its not so bad that you worry itll change you at a cellular level and make you a psychopath. This bookset had little to no sexual violence until the last book.

The Univited reminded me of a B Slasher from front to back. Which is a good thing, however I had to remove a star for the dialog. OMG the dialog. B movies arent know for their poetic dialog, but if this book was a screenplay, it wouldnt have made it to film B movie or not. I dont even know what to say about it other than I found myself randomly muttering "the dialog" and shaking my head more than once a book. Idk of th3 author did that on purpose to keep with some sort of B movie vibe, but it was bad enough where Im not going to check out his other books, even though I gave this boxset 4 stars.

80 Slasher Movie Vibes. I loved it YMMV

Im a sucker for a good slasher flick. Sadly the closest things Ive found in book / audiobook format are splatterpunk. If youve never read a splatterpunk book, imagine Halloween crossed with Hostel, with a XXX rating. Anyways more often than not, Im disappointed and disgusted. Here though, with this book, its a pure (kids doing stupid stuff) grade A slasher. I mean its not Shakspeare, but its solid wholesome horror entertainment. The only real critisism of the book is the narrator. She was great with all the female voices, and ok with most of the male voices. But for the killer it was not a good voice. It made him seem more cartoonish than sinister. I feel especially for horror books having a male and female narrator would work best. When you are teying to scare someone listening to your book in the middle of the afternoon in a bright area, anything that breaks the immersion of the story will negate the fear factor.

Still Id highly recommend this to someone with a love of the slasher genre.
