Historia
Ninety-one-year-old Gretel Fernsby has lived in the same well-to-do mansion block in London for decades. She lives a quiet, comfortable life, despite her deeply disturbing, dark past. She doesn’t talk about her escape from Nazi Germany at age 12. She doesn’t talk about the grim post-war years in France with her mother. Most of all, she doesn’t talk about her father, who was the commandant of one of the Reich’s most notorious extermination camps. All The Broken Places moves between Gretel’s girlhood in Germany to present-day London as a woman haunted by the past.

Just ok for me.
Revisado: 11-24-24
This book and the first (only saw the movie), seem like fine books to introduce young readers or new students of history to this topic. I think maybe I’ve studied these things too long and read too many fiction and nonfiction books in these genres to get much out of this. I’ve even toured the camps. The book didn’t shock me. If anything, I think the truth is more shocking than any fiction could be. The reader was excellent. I will say that. I felt the characters were un interesting and I can’t believe women really feel this way, talk like this, think like this. It was just hard to identify with them, so naïve…
I just kept thinking, well, duh.

Like the ridiculous betrayal of Nash never happened.
Revisado: 09-28-24
Always enjoy the Mitch books. Like others have said in reviews I miss George, but George is pushing 90 now so I get it. Like that this new author ignored some of the ridiculous plot tangents that were taken previously and seemed completely out of character and unbelievable based on the work that Vince did while he was alive. This book and narrator left me wanting. It was not bad, nor was it great. The love affair with Claudia, the little girl Anna, and the ridiculous, out of character betrayal of Nash, need never occur.

The parts that are good are very good
Revisado: 01-31-24
As a crime story, it’s pretty creative. I sometimes thought that real people don’t act this way and talk this way, but you know, it is fiction. Too much energy put into relationships in my opinion. Not a big fan of the storyline with the autistic brother. I thought the artificial drama with the girlfriend was a bit much. I like the Max Rupert books better.

Historia
Two years ago, a hostile Prime Minister launched the Monochrome inquiry, investigating "historical over-reaching" by the British Secret Service “to investigate historical over-reaching.” Monochrome’s mission was to ferret out any hint of misconduct by any MI5 officer—and allowed Griselda Fleet and Malcolm Kyle, the two civil servants seconded to the project, unfettered access to any and all confidential information in the Service archives in order to do so. But MI5’s formidable First Desk did not become Britain’s top spy by accident, and she has successfully thwarted the inquiry at every turn.

Fascinating hours
Revisado: 12-23-23
You mustn’t start reading this and draw up a mental list of all the characters you don’t know, or things you don’t understand. After all, you haven’t got all day. This is Spook Street, and you don’t get to know your neighbors by waving over your trilby as you walk your Corgi. It takes time. This said, Herron does far more tying up and checking in than le Carre would have. Jesus! Do readers today need all the mansplaining? Mansplaining is when a man tells a woman something she already knows in a patronizing, condescending manner. Do you need me to repeat that?

Great
Revisado: 10-10-23
If you do the math back to the years when Walt was at USC and then the Marines and some time in Alaska… He must be in his late 70s by this book. George himself is getting up there now. I’ve listen to these books for a lot of years, all read by the same man. He also did a lot of my other favorite books and some real classics. I love this one. It’s dark and threatening like Hell’s Empty. I thought the storytelling was excellent especially the last few hours. The drama with Vic is getting a little old and she must be more than 40 years his junior, so I wish the author would just let that go. Someday someone besides George will read these and we’ll all complain like we do. For now I look forward to the next one.

My poor son
Revisado: 08-19-22
I read this b/c my son got assigned to for AP. Those poor kids. Ok some of the typical playing with language from the 30s that all the classics have from that era is here and at the time maybe it was interesting that a black woman was writing this way and telling a story about black women with all the metaphors etc…but it lost its charm over the last hundred years. What served as drama and intrigue then is just not that exciting in an age when our movies and books are so graphic, scary, and realistic. When this came out it only sold in limited numbers and it has become more popular as folks now have searched more for AA literary roots. For that, it must carry more value.

Mitch Rapp has worked for a number of presidents over his career, but Anthony Cook is unlike any he’s encountered before. Cunning and autocratic, he feels no loyalty to America’s institutions and is distrustful of the influence Rapp and CIA director Irene Kennedy have in Washington.

Best Rapp book since The Survivor
Revisado: 09-23-21
I did not love the last couple books and thought the power grid plot was boring.
This book seemed very authentic to me. The dialogue and plot seem like something from old Rapp books by VF.
But Mr. Mills did something Vince didn't as much, he let Mitch off the CIA leash and left out some of the beltway soap opera.
This is a bit older and more mature book with less shooting, much less, and less torture to obtain informaiton.
It is more a thinking Rapp book. The little plot diversions with Rapp's "family" seem a forced but they are brief and tolerable.
I liked the new direction, away from Islamic terrorists some and toward enemies within, but did think it a bit of a stretch. Don't want to spoil it but you will see. New supporting characters are very well written in and well developed.
I really like Guidall as a reader and although he is getting late in his career, he has been my favorite story teller for 20 years so...
I do think listening at 1.1 or 1.2 speed helps but I do that with most books.

Contrived and melodramatic.

Nicely read but the plot is drawn out and silly. It all fits together just too cute. Characters in the book do not behave or talk like real people.
