It's just not good
Revisado: 04-13-25
The writing is hacky and doesn't know what tone it's going for, with a relatively dark setting and occasional formulaic and out of world feeling jokes. it's billed as lit rpg, which I already have relatively low expectations for but usually find to be fun and it's not clicking on that front either. it's got too many POV characters. Some of the narrators seem to not understand the natural pacing of the sentences they're reading and the volume difference between them can be jarring. The whole thing is just a mess.

Good overall story, but aspects that are just annoying
Revisado: 06-04-24
I'm sympathetic to the author's fascination with the idea of culture rapidly shifting after an apocalypse, but the wiccan stuff and archaic language from people who live in Oregon in the 90's just grated for me. it's not a moral complaint, I couldn't care less, but Jesus Christ, so many characters interact with Juniper and not one person says "wait, you're not Irish? so why are you faking the accent?".

Historia
Retired from his fighting days, John Perry is now village ombudsman for a human colony on distant Huckleberry. With his wife, former Special Forces warrior Jane Sagan, he farms several acres, adjudicates local disputes, and enjoys watching his adopted daughter grow up. That is, until his and Jane's past reaches out to bring them back into the game — as leaders of a new human colony, to be peopled by settlers from all the major human worlds, for a deep political purpose that will put Perry and Sagan back in the thick of interstellar politics, betrayal, and war.

I know there are more books but I'm taking this as a good end of a trilogy
Revisado: 12-23-23
it's pretty good! one thing did stand out though, which is that there's a major plot that just gets dropped out of nowhere. Really weird choice. It's still a very engaging story, but it just feels like it's not that tightly written

Historia
The Catenan Republic—the Hierarchy—may rule the world now, but they do not know everything. I tell them my name is Vis Telimus. I tell them I was orphaned after a tragic accident three years ago, and that good fortune alone has led to my acceptance into their most prestigious school. I tell them that once I graduate, I will gladly join the rest of civilized society in allowing my strength, my drive, and my focus—what they call Will—to be leeched away and added to the power of those above me, as millions already do. As all must eventually do.

Red Rising meets War Breaker but way worse
Revisado: 11-11-23
With a basic plot that echoes Red Rising (our hero infiltrates an elite academy in a Roman inspired fascist culture) and a magic system that seems to be almost completely borrowed from War Breaker with the only changes made coming from it being less subtle. I would have lived in peace with these bits of borrowing (I like both of those books!) but then it brought me incredibly contrived plot points that defy all reason. Not to spoil things, but quite early on a person explains to the main character that they managed to get him recruited, because they tipped off the military about a guy in prison. This plan worked because they knew that the guy the military would send would notice that the prison guard (our hero) was such a brilliant orphan that he would insist on adopting the prison guard orphan immediately, even though the prison guard is explicitly trying to keep a low profile, and it just keeps getting more elaborate and just-so with each plot point.

Historia
Tamsyn Muir’s Gideon the Ninth unveils a solar system of swordplay, cut-throat politics, and lesbian necromancers. Her characters leap out of the audio, as skillfully animated as arcane revenants. The result is a heart-pounding epic science fantasy. Brought up by unfriendly, ossifying nuns, ancient retainers, and countless skeletons, Gideon is ready to abandon a life of servitude and an afterlife as a reanimated corpse.

Took me a minute but I'm sold!
Revisado: 07-31-21
I almost set it down after the beginning, but I'm glad I stuck it out and I'm looking forward to the sequels.
