Colin Wilson gets 5 stars, this review is about this volume as an editorial project. I suppose a book of excerpts is always going to suffer some repetition and discontinuity. That's fine. For a writer with such a reputation, and with hints at some omitted writings and areas of focus , this seems like a pretty poor summary, If this is somehow "ultimate" it speaks poorly of Wilson. Why, for instance, lengthy speculations on subjects that have been amply superseded by general knowledge of our time. There's not all that much about mysticism, consciousness, and existentialism. Maybe this is about inducing sales of other Colin Wilson titles. It worked, I might just do that. But seems like a bit misleading to suggest the reader is getting something comprehensive or even representative. Other than that, the reader at least sounds like Colin Wilson looks.

Great courses are background surveys on a subject; and, that's exactly what this is. It's not theology, it's not interpretation, it's not guidance. It's historiography. Good stuff to know. But probably not everything you want to know. At least it wasn't for me. But I didn't expect more. True, the title suggests more. But you should know this is how Great Courses roll.

What I want in a book about Philosophy

The author isolates some key elements of the Philosopher's thought and deftly describes them in clear language as part of a narrative of Spinoza's life and struggles in publishing one work in particular. It is telling that the author humbly qualifies his work as incomplete and overly committed to vernacular, even as he delivers a really clear description of at least some of Spinoza's thought. Personally I find most Western philosophy obtuse to the point of tedium. I don't need either the polysyllabic, latinate original or the tangled and overly qualified text book style mediation. I need the easy reading "need to know" summary by a competent intermediary. Here it is with bells on.

I think if you're just curious about the enlightenment along with a lot of other historical episodes, this will book will probably be too much. You'll get into a forest and trees situation. But if you really want to more deeply understand the period, or the present day for that matter, I doubt there's anything else so comprehensive and in-depth. And you're in safe hands. Lots of backing up of what is asserted. Lots of receipts. What surprised me is the breadth of the whole thing. Still I could have used less focus on touching every major and middling figure and more on the relevance of the works on what followed. And what is still following. The reader is good. I particularly liked how he does the quotes in the sort of stuffy, overly loud voice. I think they all talked just like that.

Genuine Wisdom, Folks, Right Here!

This is kind of like Lao Tzu or Khalil Gibran or even Marcus Aurelius, it's a vehicle for a lot of counter-intuitive wisdom about all the big subjects. I might call it mystical stoicism. It checks out with a lot of other deep reality writings, so it's not some guy just free styling. Think of the books that feature what is supposed to be an amazingly wise character, who never says much wise at all. Because in order for it to work, the author actually has to at least appreciate that wisdom. Coelho does, clearly. You can't fake that. Jeremy Irons is the perfect reader. I guessing Irons doesn't need the gig and is some kind of true believer. Sure sounds like it. Sure adds to the aura of it all.

Delivers what you want from Great Courses - the events described in context. I lived through a lot of this and heard a lot about the events but this series puts it all together without either over simplifying or taking an overbearing perspective.

Off the cuff, untutored observations of the main character, make the book. Having been a high schooler in a rural area who even played football and walked on the wild side a little bit - a pretty unobservable corner of human consciousness that its denizens would just as soon forget - I can say Kingsolver nails it. Respect for that alone. Not that it was entirely comfortable reliving all that stuff. It's a great thing when something you need to hear is also something entertaining to hear. The reader is great. The characters are true. A bit on the long side, but with a lot of zingers.

Like another reviewer said, a rare case where the movie is better than the book. True, I did see the movie first. Then there's the 50 year gap, which would matter for a story that relies on a certain cultural fluency. The book has a sparse, noir vibe - it does not fill in a lot of blank spaces. Which I can appreciate. Still, I thought I would find something more nuanced in the Ripley character. I would definitely recommend it. The story is one of those touch points that a lot of people know.

Bell is an impressive character and her story is amazing. My impression is that this is written for young readers. Over and over again the author emphasizes how and why it is all the more remarkable that Bell is female. Informed readers will find this overbearing. But, perhaps, and I think probably, this is written for readers who might not have a lot of context.

A morality tale with the familiar cast of life's likeable losers, struggling to connect, mostly failing, but finally, coming through. The characters are likeable and true to life, if a bit compacted to serve the plot. Nice work to get an octopus in there...if you like that sort of thing. I might not have read it but for the Octopus.
