As usual well told story but nothing really fresh about it. Parallels of generations too obvious and led in to more India and Matt also obvious.

Historia
Relentless phone calls interrupt the peace of a warm August morning in Three Pines. Though the tiny Québec village is impossible to find on any map, someone has managed to track down Armand Gamache, head of homicide at the Sûreté, as he sits with his wife in their back garden. Reine-Marie watches with increasing unease as her husband refuses to pick up, though he clearly knows who is on the other end. When he finally answers, his rage shatters the calm of their quiet Sunday morning.

Fast paced and worth reading or listening to if you are a Gamache fan.
Revisado: 11-05-24
It took some time to get used to the new narrator. Personally, I think the old narrator was better at discriminating between the characters. By the time I was well through the book I did appreciate this new narrator, and I wish him well. Having read all of the Gamache books I appreciated the interweaving of the old stories with the new. I am wondering if perhaps it is time that this character be retired. It was an interesting story. very fast paced, and at times the accent was a little confusing. As always, I admire the authors, fine writing. It was an absorbing and interesting story but did not offer much in the way of new ideas.

This was a tidy and simply plotted story. It is not up to the standard that I think the author normally writes. It’s a fun listen and I always enjoy de Lint’s writing.

Historia
Librarian Sylvia Ashe knows nothing about her past, having grown up without a father and a mother who refused to discuss him. When she stumbles upon a diary that suggests she's descended from magicians, she's skeptical. After all, magicians are special, and she's just an ordinary woman who loves books. She seeks answers from a member of the most prominent family of magicians, but she quickly learns that finding the truth won't be easy, especially when he turns out to be as artless as her, and more compelling and dangerous than books.

The Glass & Steele Lineage Continues!
Revisado: 10-02-22
While it was pleasant to encounter some of the characters from the previous Glass & Steele Series, it also seems like a repeat of the original - I found that disappointing. The use of the character Willie once again does not enhance this new series. She is even more obnoxious than the first series and there seems no mellowing or growth of her character. Not certain that I will continue this second series.

Historia
Esme is born into a world of words. Motherless and irrepressibly curious, she spends her childhood in the Scriptorium, an Oxford garden shed in which her father and a team of dedicated lexicographers are collecting words for the very first Oxford English Dictionary. Young Esme’s place is beneath the sorting table, unseen and unheard. One day a slip of paper containing the word bondmaid flutters beneath the table. She rescues the slip and, learning that the word means “slave girl,” begins to collect other words discarded or neglected by the dictionary men.

A Completely Wonderful Use of Words!
Revisado: 10-02-22
I found this book so very pleasing. It was relaxing to listen to and also extremely interesting. I love words and to read a book about how the Oxford Dictionary was created was fascinating, but at times annoying in its discrimination toward women that was common at the time. I appreciate the “real” and fictional characters and the author’s intent to retain historical accuracy. A very fine book indeed.

Historia
Art & Fear explores the way art gets made, the reasons it often doesn't get made, and the nature of the difficulties that cause so many artists to give up along the way. This is a book about what it feels like to sit in your studio or classroom, at your wheel or keyboard, easel or camera, trying to do the work you need to do. It is about committing your future to your own hands, placing free will above predestination, choice above chance. It is about finding your own work.
