Historia
A hurricane is building, threatening the coastal town of Bois Sauvage, Mississippi, and Esch's father is growing concerned. A hard drinker, largely absent, he doesn't show concern for much else. Esch and her three brothers are stocking food, but there isn't much to save. Lately, Esch can't keep down what food she gets; she's 14 and pregnant. Her brother Skeetah is sneaking scraps for his prized pitbull's new litter, dying one by one in the dirt. Meanwhile, brothers Randall and Junior try to stake their claim in a family long on child's play and short on parenting.

It tried to engage, like a popsicle on a hot day.
Revisado: 05-03-22
The Good: It was a very good story, and I was totally in love with all of the characters. The complexity and closeness involved in the family and close friends was obvious and made me feel like I was part of them. The Narrator! I don't have the words to describe her performance, really. But she had at least 7 different people going with her voice, and I could tell which one was which as easily if there'd been a whole cast. I'm flabbergasted. The Sixth Day is a masterpiece. It's rare for me to feel such suspense and horror at the same time, but she did it. The Bad: The metaphors and similes killed me. At first, some of them were really great, but when I hit a bad one, they all became so choking, because you can't go 3 sentences without one, like an alcoholic with a steady paycheck. They were put together like a cobweb that just got swept away by a broom. They were as annoying as pecans. Anyway, I was about to pull my hair out to get through it, and the only reason I even got through is because of The Good, above. The Ugly: The description of this book kind of sort of mentions dogs by saying that Skeetah sneaks food for his dog (which I don't even remember happening), and that's it. But most of the story is about dog fights. As I said in The Bad, I kept going because the story and characters were so good, but there were a lot of times I had to fast forward because that's absolutely NOT why I got this book. Final verdict: I want to read more books that are narrated by Januaray LaVoy, but I'm not sure I'd read another book by Jesmyn Ward. Well, maybe I would, but only if it's free.

I loved this whodunit. The story had me hooked from the beginning. The psychological games and twists and turns kept me interested, and a lot of the time, on the edge of my seat. The narration was FANTASTIC. She was a lot of people and did each of them well. Time well spent.

Maya loves to cook with her grandmother - her Halmunee - to connect with the rich family history associated with each dish, a history Maya's mom would prefer stayed in the past. While cooking with Halmunee, something remarkable happens - the food creates such a strong memory that Maya and Halmunee are transported back in time through the memory itself. Halmunee explains that the women in her family have the gift of time travel through food and Maya can do it too, if she practices.

Not fun.
Revisado: 04-20-22
It could've been fun, but have you ever read a book, then got to the end and found that someone had ripped a chunk of the pages out? spoiler: That's what this is like. I enjoyed the story up until the part where there is a death match with an immortal. How does that even happen? Why did she shoot Kai? What was kai's plan? Why does she think he's coming back from the dead? Why is she confused when Rissa and co. are pissed off at her for killing Kai? Why does she say, "they think I did it" when she did, indeed, do it? Why would she expect an apology from Rissa? For not knowing that she had a seeeeccreet plan the whole time that's supposed to fool everyone? I'm as stupid as Rissa is, I guess. No apology will be coming from me, that's for sure. I didn't like the narration, but I stuck with it, because I was enjoying the story. That's a lot of wasted time to learn that the resolution is a secret that lives in the author's head and nowhere else. Thoroughly disappointed.

From podcasts and documentaries to online forums, true crime is booming. But as one Audible editor and self-professed crime obsessive observes, the genre is being pulled in new and different directions along with a changing social landscape. She wanted to know: Can we ethically engage in true crime as real concerns surface around the crimes, victims, and systemic issues that directly impact the humans we are hearing about?

Waiting for the murder?
Revisado: 02-11-22
If you can handle the first half of story that's written from the point of view of the most egotistical ass, you might enjoy this. However, it's about as predictable as you can get. I figured out what was going on and how it would end within the first hour. Wouldn't rec. this to anyone. Well, maybe my worst enemy or my ex.
One thing's for sure: this is a story about a self-absorbed man written by a woman, then narrated by a man, so there's that.

Really happy about this anthology
Revisado: 02-10-22
I think most of the stories can be found online in magazines, but I'm so glad these were put together in audiobook format. N. K. Jemisin Is consistently brilliant, and this anthology is a good collection of many of examples of her novels, and a lot of things that are outside those realms and genres. I was immersed, sad, excited, heart-broken, angry and some emotions I can't name. It was interesting to listen to some of the "bones" of her novels that I've read in a few of the stories in this book. The only bad thing I can say about this is that I want more.

Revisado: 02-09-22
The format of the story, with all of it basically focused on the baby, was just riveting. It seemed as if it was all told through his eyes, as well as hers. The words. The narration.
Give this one a read if you're looking for cli-fi that's off the beaten path and that's so well written it will make you gasp.

Historia
Dellarobia Turnbow is a restless farm wife who gave up her own plans when she accidentally became pregnant at 17. Now, after a decade of domestic disharmony on a failing farm, she encounters a shocking sight: a silent, forested valley filled with what looks like a lake of fire. She can only understand it as a cautionary miracle, but it sparks a raft of other explanations from scientists, religious leaders, and the media.

All those words
Revisado: 02-05-22
When I read paper books back in the ancient times, I would underline passages or words otherwise linked elegantly, profoundly, interestingly. Sometimes, to the horror of other book nerds, but not me, I would bend the corner of a page down. Not much, not enough to cover any words, but enough to tell me, "here it is, the spot you want to find again." I would run out of ink reading this book. I gave up trying to jot things down because I might as well jot down the whole book. I felt like there wasn't a single word that was wasted, none that were otherwise needed, just perfection. The wordplay was so fun, but the double meanings of so many things could be devastating at the same time. I loved the story itself, but I was lost in the beauty of the woods, and in the soft sweet voice and temperament of Dellarobia, the kindness she had for everyone. It was the way the words were entwined with each other and everything in the book. The narrator's voice was perfect. I love it when an author reads her book, because there are no misunderstandings, mispronunciations, accents on the wrong word. Perfect. I didn't think I would like this book, because I'm not "into" butterflies. I'm glad I read it. I was immediately and completely hooked from the first few sentences. Happy about this experience.

Are there editors anymore?
Revisado: 02-02-22
I can't believe how bad this writing is. The story is all over the place, contradictory, repetitive, assuming, and very very precious with itself. I really tried, because I hoped that it would settle in and get its legs, but it didn't, and I was not going to spend much more time trying to make myself like it.
I can't imagine that this went through without an editor (?), so I would put some, if not most of the blame for this disaster on them.
The narration was pretty bad, too. He was going a million miles an hour.
Unpleasant experience.
