Historia
It began on New Year’s Eve. The sickness came on suddenly, and spread quickly. The fear spread even faster. Within weeks, everything people counted on began to fail them. The electrical grid sputtered; law and government collapsed - and more than half of the world’s population was decimated. Where there had been order, there was now chaos. And as the power of science and technology receded, magick rose up in its place.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
This story is incredibly compelling. The characters are fully developed and pull the listener in.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Year One?
All the scenes in the subway was VERY interesting. I can't wait to find out what it all means.
Have you listened to any of Julia Whelan’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I like Julia's voice. I haven't listened to any other performances but I thought she was amazing. It must've been difficult keeping track of all the different voices (to include any accents) but she nailed it.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I didn't laugh or cry but I was sad and happy at turns. This book, this story, and the narrator made me anxious for the second. This whole story actually also made me a little nervous every time I hear someone cough in public.

Historia
Rescued by Calvin McLoughlin from a would-be subway attacker, Holland Bakker pays the brilliant musician back by pulling some of her errand-girl strings and getting him an audition with a big-time musical director. When the tryout goes better than even Holland could have imagined, Calvin is set for a great entry into Broadway - until he admits his student visa has expired and he's in the country illegally. Holland impulsively offers to wed the Irishman to keep him in New York, her growing infatuation a secret only to him.

Not A Fan

What would have made Roomies better?
The self-pity described over and over by the main character about herself was really off-putting. Also, it didn't seem like Calvin was really interested in Holland until he knows who she's related to. And I've had crushes before but her obsession with the male lead without having even seen his face was weird. I also didn't enjoy the narrator (I'll get into that in the performance notes).
How could the performance have been better?
I can't figure out if KC Sheridan is Irish and trying to do an American accent or American and trying to sound lyrical. Either way, she didn't sound like the character was from either the Midwest or NYC. Her mispronunciation of common words like "Manhattan" (just putting the emphasis in a weird place) kept pulling me out of the story. Also, I thought her reading was flat. I don't know how to describe it but there wasn't a lot of inflection or acting - she just read the words, sometimes with an accent and sometimes trying not to have an accent.
