Jarring, struggling, snooty, choppy and occasionally dead wrong readings make listening painfully slow and tedious.

Don't judge an audiobook by its cover

Total
2 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 11-15-19

While a bit more attractive than products from other vendors of adult prose, you may find the cover to be the best thing about this selection. Mechanically simple plots:something-is-added to the scene-someone-reacts-DONE. With occasional interruptions while the narrator tries to decide how to pronounce the next phrase, ALOUD. Better packages are available; you can safely skip this one

The story of sexual assault in Hollywood and NBC and the journalist who didn't give up. Farrow narrates his own story and his association with the TV giant and the New Yorker. Well done, and well worth hearing.

Pitching laughs rather than strikes, this naive Babe Ruth legend clears the bases! Great fun.

A Crackling Drama about Love and Social Media

Revisado: 02-08-19

Highly recommended. The wonderful narration by Ms. Etter keeps the action moving.

The premise is droll - two women entertainers accept their scheming managers plan to have them stage a wild public relations campaign: the two will live together VERY publicly while attracting as much media attention as possible. The (straight) cynical pop music star is creating her latest album; the (lesbian) actress wants to crash her teen ingenue image to fight for a dramatic role she feels only she can bring to life.

The opening sequence with the managers is high-level farce, but the story opens up as the two women examine how this live-action drama fits self-interest and self-awareness. Two women who barely know each other discover even a penthouse can provide insufficient personal space. And both carry baggage from previous, less public, relationships.

Along the way there are warm moments and huge arguments, a lot of female-empowerment and a few side trips regarding celebrity and its coverage in new media, ageism, heterosexism, the horror of conversion therapy and one ringing soliloquy about the value of books. Hear hear!

A very good story. It would make a terrific movie, but I won't hold my breath. DR. .

Nothing "Grey" about "The Red"

Revisado: 02-08-19

It's hot, it's funny, it's a wild adventure, it is captivating. "The Red" is the aging, small, failing art gallery Mona swore to her dying mother she would keep alive. Surrounded with fear and debt, Mona meets an elderly patron who promises to save the enterprise on one condition - Mona must make herself available to him for a year. As the meetings become more elaborate and impossibly extravagant, Mona becomes more and more concerned about her sensual customer and how his fantastical visions are possible, while becoming more and more worried that her donor may be unable able to fulfill his promise.

With lubricious language, Ms. Reisz, whose main weakness is a tendency to use "orgasm" as a verb, and with the sultry narration of Ms. Hart, this adult wonderland is a ride you will enjoy taking again and again.

Jane Austen - still devilishly funny

A cast of voices working through a gentle adaptation and Emma Thompson whispering in your year between scenes? What a delightful way to hear Jane Austen, especially the lesser-known "Emma."

Like the books themselves, one occasionally loses track of which gentleman caller is which, but "Crazy Rich Asians" have nothing on this neighborhood. Oh, to have a house large enough to invite visitors for a month at a time...sigh.

Straight, frank and unafraid, the film author, director and performer starts with her first horse and first table dance, then takes us to the golf course where she ran into a certain New York real estate investor, the dark street where her child was threatened, and even the office of her plastic surgeon. She has a story to tell and she has a very straightforward explanation of why you can believe her. Best moment for this reader was her giddy tale of her appearance on the show she'd watched since childhood, joining a huge grade A cast to yell, "Live from New York, IT'S SATURDAY NIGHT!"

Kudos also to Ms. Burton who makes it easy to forget we're not hearing from the author herself.

You've heard parts of the tale - why not go to the horse-lover herself and get the full story. Entertaining and memorable.

Not familiar with Offerman, and not even fond of Twain? Don't worry! This 8-course banquet will fascinate even the toughest cynic.

Based on a whimsical, very long order of what Twain demanded as his first meal when he returns from the "awrul" food of Europe, the menu has been researched, investigated, and when possible, even recreated (no animals were successfully hunted in the development of this production).. You are invited to take a seat and eat, drink, enjoy, learn, and laugh with a very entertaining table of new friends. The only negative thing I can say is the party ends too quickly.

Possibly the best-constructed audible offering in my very long years of membership, this is truly a feast for the imagination and American literature history..
