Historia
Michael is coming undone. Adrift after his wife's departure, he has begun taking himself on long, solitary walks across the English countryside. Becoming ever more reclusive, he’ll do anything to avoid his empty house. Marnie, on the other hand, is stuck. Hiding alone in her London flat, she avoids old friends and any reminders of her rotten, selfish ex-husband. Curled up with a good book, she’s battling the long afternoons of a life that feels like it’s passing her by.

Historia
Outside of a childhood nickname she can’t shake, Piglet’s rather pleased with how her life’s turned out. An up-and-coming cookbook editor at a London publishing house, she’s got lovely, loyal friends and a handsome fiancé, Kit, whose rarefied family she actually, most of the time, likes, despite their upper-class eccentricities. One of the many, many things Kit loves about Piglet is the delicious, unfathomably elaborate meals she’s always cooking.

Historia
The Barnes family is in trouble. Dickie’s once-lucrative car business is going under—but Dickie is spending his days in the woods, building an apocalypse-proof bunker with a renegade handyman. His wife, Imelda, is selling off her jewelry on eBay and half-heartedly dodging the attention of fast-talking cattle farmer Big Mike, while their teenage daughter, Cass, formerly top of her class, seems determined to binge drink her way through her final exams. As for twelve-year-old PJ, he’s on the brink of running away.

Why all the fuss ?
Revisado: 01-13-24
I just could not see why this book got so much hype. Tedious details, weird plot twists, gratuitous details of fights, although I was drawn in initially I skipped the second half . Authentic details on life in rural regions of N Ireland were surprisingly on point but a bit empty without the upside of the dramatic scenery, depth of the place ….

Disturbing …

The opening story bears no reference to Antarctica - it’s just another story about violence against women … didn’t listen any further. There’s enough of that IRL

Historia
Ken and Abby Gardner lost their mother when they were small and they have been haunted by her absence ever since. Their father, Adam, a brilliant oceanographer, raised them mostly on his own in his remote home on Cape Cod, where the attachment between Ken and Abby deepened into something complicated—and as adults their relationship is strained. Now, years later, the siblings’ lives are still deeply entwined.

Tedious, good context poor story
Revisado: 08-31-23
The basic premise of the book being around a marine biologist drew me in but the details were inaccurate - humpback whales don’t use echolocation, and the milk is not pink !!! The plot around the biologist and his work was very flimsy. The family dynamic was a little more believable but the ending was really contrived … can’t honestly recommend this book

Historia
Josie and her children's father have split up, she's been sued by a former patient and lost her dental practice, and she's grieving the death of a young man senselessly killed. When her ex asks to take the children to meet his new fiancée's family, Josie makes a run for it, figuring Alaska is about as far as she can get without a passport. Josie and her kids, Paul and Ana, rent a rattling old RV named the Chateau, and at first their trip feels like a vacation.

Unpleasant
Revisado: 07-09-23
First the bighorn sheep would be Dalls sheep - more research would solve this issue but what left me cold was the vivid descriptions that were basically gross / I couldn’t see the point and couldn’t get past this . Otherwise I did find the story engaging but couldn’t deal with the unpleasant descriptions ….

Less angst more park details
Revisado: 02-07-23
I was really excited to listen to this and enjoyed the first half. I did empathize with the author as her mental health issues took hold, but for the book, I would rather have heard more about the parks . I can’t quite understand why someone with so much fear of time alone would set off on a trip like this - it’s a fabulous opportunity to travel and write , so it’s sad that she didn’t make the most of her time and opportunity. Also - in Lake Clark NP, go see the brown bears on the coast … amazing !!! Maui - visit during whale season and yes the back road to Hana is a one lane road - every guide book tells you that . A good alt to this is Heartbreak by Florence Williams .

Historia
With an eye for rendering the timely in a timeless way and enchanting audiences with lyrical prose and grace, Ali Smith's ambitious Seasonal Quartet—a series of four stand-alone novels, separate but interconnected—artfully guided us through #MeToo, Brexit, the refugee crisis, a global pandemic, and more. Now, Smith's highly anticipated Companion Piece looks to the future and builds upon this "time-sensitive project". This new novel stands apart from the Quartet, which remains discrete unto itself.
