Historia
When Miles Hammond is invited to a meeting of the Murder Club in London, he is met instead with just two other guests and is treated to a strange tale of an impossible crime in France years before; the murder of a man on a tower with only one staircase, under watch at the time at which the murder took place. With theories of levitating vampires abounding, the story comes home to Miles when he realises that the librarian he has just hired for his home is none other than Fay Seton, a woman at the heart of this bizarre and unsolved past murder.

Could be a short story
Revisado: 10-26-24
Towards the end the person who solved the mystery announces that it all came together in three seconds. But the author takes about 47 chapters to explain the resolution.

Historia
Trauma is a fact of life. Veterans and their families deal with the painful aftermath of combat; one in five Americans has been molested; one in four grew up with alcoholics; one in three couples have engaged in physical violence. Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, one of the world’s foremost experts on trauma, has spent more than three decades working with survivors. In The Body Keeps the Score, he uses recent scientific advances to show how trauma literally reshapes both body and brain, compromising sufferers’ capacities for pleasure, engagement, self-control, and trust.

Both technical and practical
Revisado: 05-31-21
It’s a little surprising that this book has been on best seller lists for so long, as it has a lot of technical information about how the brain functions in response to trauma, though the language is quite approachable. It also had a lot of information about healing and restorative techniques that you’d like to think every therapist had read and understood. A worthwhile read!

Don’t bother
Revisado: 05-22-21
The plot is full of psychotic images, and an underlying premise that is beyond the normal suspension of belief that books like this require. The ending makes no sense given the character development that preceded it. There are a lot of good gothic novels out there and this is not one of them.

A good mystery unfolds in your mind like a movie. This story unfolds like a one hour TV show. It’s pretty predictable though the descriptions of characters and places are well done. Have the British Library folks already reissued all the really good ones???

Historia
When Douglas B. Douglas - leading light of the London theatre - premiers his new musical extravaganza, Blue Music, he is sure the packed house will be dazzled by the performance. What he couldn't predict is the death of his star, Brandon Baker, onstage in the middle of act two. Soon another member of the cast is found dead, and it seems to be a straightforward case of murder followed by suicide.

Historia
With the papacy embattled in recent years, it is essential to have the perspective of one of the world's most accomplished historians. In Absolute Monarchs, John Julius Norwich captures nearly 2,000 years of inspiration and devotion, intrigue and scandal. The men (and maybe one woman) who have held this position of infallible power over millions have ranged from heroes to rogues, admirably wise to utterly decadent.

The book with 5000 names and 10000 dates
Revisado: 09-02-15
The occasional anecdote makes this book acceptable, but because Norwich writes about every Pope it becomes hard to follow. So many names, so many dates, it gets a bit confusing. The book gives a good sense of the swing between traditionalism and reform within the church that has gone on for centuries. And also makes you wonder if there is any connection between God and the Catholic Church except for the occasional moment in history.

In a Sussex town on the south coast of England, a widely disliked art teacher at a posh private girls' school disappears without explanation. None of her students miss her boring lessons, especially since her replacement is a devilishly hunky male teacher with a fancy car. But then her name shows up on a police missing persons list. What happened to Miss Gibbon, and why does no one seem to care?

Good not great
Revisado: 08-22-15
A well told story but with a few odd twists to the plot that NO detective, even Peter Diamond, would pull. Like failing to acknowledge a former relationship with one of the characters under investigation. Interesting story, it did not feel like it was written to be a major motion picture, a liability among modern crime writers. Believable?? No but a good summer read.
