I started listening to Obitchuary podcast during the earliest episodes and have been a loyal Geoff ever since. I’m old enough to be their mom; but I love hearing their take on life, death and seeing the comfort and laughter they’ve helped to bring to their listeners.

Yes, there are quite a few “Best of Obitchuary” moments here. But they’ve organized it into an engaging book you can enjoy to also get the gist of a BUNCH of shows.

Spencer and Madison seem to share the understanding I have that the one guarantee we are born with is that we will die. It can be scary and overwhelming to consider the our mortality and that of those we love. What can we do to make something less terrifying? Educate ourselves, learn to laugh (even irreverently), show compassion, kindness, listen and learn from those who work intimately in healthcare and the funeral industry, and learn from and support one another through the whole process. And you need to know how to make Funeral Potatoes like any Southern Lady worth her salt. (Go find that episode!)

Everyone misses Richard Ferrone’s amazing, familiar voice for our longtime favorite characters. But Robert Petkoff did a great job with cadence, pacing, distinguishing characters consistently and capturing the comic tones in his first time read as these characters. Yes, it’s hard to adjust when we’ve heard Mr Ferrone’s amazing gravelly voice all these years. I never envy a new narrator’s first entry in an established series. But Mr Petkoff did very well interpreting these characters who are already so established in our minds; and that’s no small task.

The storyline finds our heroes on the other side of serious injuries needing to make strong physical and mental comebacks. What better way to divert the mind from depression and pain than to be needed on a tough investigation?

I always enjoy the psychological development of each character in the Davenport and Flowers series. This book is no exception as we watch several characters devolve. The black and white of right and wrong falls on a vast scale of grays in between for each character. It’s delving into the gray scales and watching each one discover their personal sand lines that make these books so brilliant.

The whole series is just a dose of happiness

And who doesn’t need some happiness? The evolution of the characters has been delightful. Kind of like the contents of Gertie’s purse and the speed of Ida Belle’s SUV, you can count on some plot consistency. However, whatever the situation, rest assured there will be a surprise; and it’s going to make you laugh.

BTW, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the evolution of Ronald’s relationship with Swamp Team Three. It’s added more dimension and opportunities for various plot developments.

Cassandra Campbell may not get some Louisiana pronunciations right, but I enjoy her interpretation of the characters. In all fairness when I first saw the name “Hebert” I said “He-Bert,” too. Unless you’ve ever lived in or near NOLA, you won’t know it’s pronounced “A-Bear.” (Don’t ask me how they get “A-Bear” out of “Hebert,” but there you have it nonetheless.) We lived just north of NOLA for 7 years, so I got an education! :D When I read the books before the audiobooks are released, I hear her Ida Belle and Gertie voices in my head. Considering I’ve listened to each book a dozen times like a favorite album, I obviously enjoy listening to her.

Subject matter too dark, detailed and depressing

I’ve never returned an Eve Dallas Series book, but I couldn’t get past the first few chapters before being overwhelmingly saddened by the subject matter. I don’t read these books to be overwhelmed by sadness. I can watch documentaries and listen to or read other books on the subject of child sex trafficking if I choose to be depressed by stark reality. I’m no Polly Anna who can’t handle a dark subject. I’ve listened to every book in this series multiple times. I rated this book low because of how it affected me, and because people read reviews with low ratings to see why the person didn’t like it. So here’s why: bluntly, there’s nothing lighthearted here which is what people looking for an emotionally uplifting book should know. There’s no way to feel happy or uplifted when reading about a child’s indoctrination into becoming a sex toy for sick, sadistic adults.

Susan Eriksen is brilliant as always. And I know in this book, good will overcome evil. However, this book is graphic in describing indoctrination and shaping of children. In reality, sex trafficking of children is a hideously disturbing subject that has no miraculous, happy ending. Also maybe there needs to be a big trigger warning that this could be disturbing for survivors of childhood sexual assault or trafficking.

What a gem to find. A staff of one, Shannon Ballard, does an incredible job of researching, presenting, recording and producing this great podcast. She’s a wonderful storyteller!

When you listen to enough podcasts about life and true crime, you realize that some problems are universal. That said? Oh, there’s no place like home! As a life long resident of the South (in MS and AL), the author/narrator introduced me to people I haven’t met yet. Lol. I was pulled into the story hearing John’s first rant. All I could think was, “Oh this is gonna be good!” It was. It was a funny, sad, very thought-provoking, fascinating portrait of a man, who he was and what he meant to others. Beautifully done.

I enjoyed every minute of listening to Billie Joe’s impressions, recollections and feelings about the music he and Green Day have written and performed through the years. Hearing the music performed was an extra gift of awesomeness, unless you’re the unfortunate guy in the car next to me hearing me sing along!

How delightful! This is a collection of infrequently told or little known stories that are part Hollywood’s fascinating history. They’re told with great insight and appreciation of how they impacted the Hollywood of today. I truly enjoyed every minute of it. The author did a fine job of narrating as well.

Female reader not best choice for this series

I enjoy this series, and the short stories were light and fun mysteries. My one complaint is the female reader. Her skills with accents aren’t the most versatile or adept. Okay, neither are mine; but I’m not being paid to read aloud. Hang with the series though because the newer reader, Ms Mary Jane Wells, does much better with character accents and performance. Mr Prebble does a great job as always.

Better female reader for this series now

Ms Wells does a great job clearly delineating between characters and much better with accents and interpretation than her predecessor. I hated to deduct stars before because the plots are fun and enjoyable. However I should have, because the content deserved a more skilled female reader who could adapt to the numerous accents. Mr Prebble has always done well which kept me listening to the series. Thanks for the change. Nothing personal against Ms King, but her repertoire wasn’t broad enough for these characters.
