Historia
In this urgent and timely book, Patrick Cockburn writes the first draft of the history of the current crisis in the Middle East. Here he charts the period from the recapture of Mosul in 2017 to Turkey's attack on Kurdish territory in November 2019, and recounts the new phase in the wars of disintegration that have plagued the region. The ground battle with the caliphate is perhaps over, but was this the end of the conflict that has scarred these nations for decades?

Mr. Cochran has compiled a series of his own reporting from Syria and Iraq mainly since 2011. He has a justifiably critical view of all sources of official information including the US Gulf states the Russians Iranians and of course the Syrian and Iraqi governments. The great value of this book is his own personal interviewing under dangerous conditionsOf all sides of this multifaceted conflict.

It’s as if your own brain is telling you the story. Lecrae is the best reader of novels that I have heard. I would recommend this book to anyone who cares about knowing how the real world works and wants to be entertained by it. The spy craft is as always impeccable.

Historia
It is 1940. For the past decade, Walter Benjamin - the German-Jewish critic and philosopher - has been writing his masterpiece in a library in Paris, a city he loves. Now Nazi tanks have overrun the suburbs, and Benjamin is forced to flee. With a battered briefcase that contains his precious manuscript of a thousand handwritten pages, he sets off for the border and is led by chance to a young anti-Nazi who is taking Jews and other refugees over the Pyrenees into Spain, where they may (with luck) make their way to freedom in Portugal or South America.

A novel for our time
Revisado: 04-19-22
This novel captures the time leading up to the apocalypse, or the coup de grace, for the European civilization that we love and still today try to emulate. Benjamin abhorred the mechanization and mass marketing of art, something that we take for granted today --albeit with subconscious unease. Mr Parini captures this revulsion in the awkward and stunted interactions the hero has with everyone whom he loves or who tries to love him. Like all good novels, this one makes the reader love the hero despite his profound flaws of character. In that way the reader gets a glimmer of what happened to Europe's best minds and why they were unable to stop the madness and cruelty that has scarred their continent and global culture forever. Excellent reading, totally in character, with a rare appreciation for accent and tone. The novel makes one hunger to know more about its characters, each one of whom would merit a novel on his or her own.

Under Western Eyes, Joseph Conrad's novel of political treachery and oppression, of betrayal, guilt, and intrigue, begins with a bomb that kills its intended target, a hated Russian minister of police, along with a number of innocent bystanders. A young student named Razumov hides the perpetrator, then betrays him and becomes a spy among his exiled comrades. He faces a moral dilemma from which there is no escape.

Hi Lily authentic sounding exploration of Russian dilemma
Revisado: 04-03-22
One of Conrad’s most enigmatic novels. But one that is extremely contemporary. Conrad examines motivations -The motivations of autocrats, the motivations of revolutionaries. and most of all the motivations of those who try to defy their own moral principles and live ruthlessly only for themselves. Western incomprehension of the East is a brilliant conceit in the narrative though in the end the author has a pretty good grasp of what is tormenting these Russian souls.
The reader strikes exactly the right tone of somber fatefulness.
An excellent read for these days when the cold war is flaming up again.

Historia
For the past three decades, the United States and Iran have been engaged in an unacknowledged secret war. This conflict has frustrated five American presidents, divided administrations, and repeatedly threatened to bring the two nations to the brink of open warfare. Drawing upon unparalleled access to senior officials and key documents of several US administrations, David Crist, a senior historian in the federal government, breaks new ground in virtually every section of The Twilight War.

Revisado: 01-18-21
The book explores the animosity between the US and Iran over 50 years. The author conducted countless interviews with Americans and Iranians. He captures their perspectives on each other very well. Opportunities for peace were missed by both sides.I would especially recommend this book for policymakers and journalists specializing in the region because it is very long and very detailed.

Revisiting the Iranian Revolution
Revisado: 05-08-19
A good fiction account of Iran’s excursion into Jihad and the demonization of the West by Islamist firebrands. Clavel
‘s more developed characters are
Western with a few Iranians thrown in as symbols. The action doesn’t stop and pulls one along. Skillful suspense. Great scenes of violent action in the air and on the ground. Good historical context well researched.
