Did not disappoint
Revisado: 07-02-23
This was a blast. Old Hollywood history plus swampy ritual magic are a reliable recipe for a story, plus a creepy carnival? Hell yes.

Blazed through this
Revisado: 06-05-23
Wanted more! I’d listened to an earlier novel from LaValle and this was much more engaging. Did notice a name stopped from that one among Adelaide’s books. I love a good western/paranormal/historical mashup.

Although the title includes the words “Book 3”, the text indicates that I missed part of the overall story somehow. Events and characters were referred to which I don’t remember.

It’s long, but you’ll stay up nights taking it in. I thoroughly enjoyed this performance and the story is tragic and terrifying.

Historia
Elegiac, bittersweet and profoundly moving, The Leopard chronicles the turbulent transformation of the Risorgimento, in the period of Italian Unification. The waning feudal authority of the elegant and stately Prince of Salina is pitted against the materialistic cunning of Don Calogero, in Tomasi's magnificently descriptive memorial to a dying age.

I wish I could read Italian

Livid Dust. Swan over a frog-filled pool.
How much more could you feel, in the original language? The end of this book is devastating. Unexpected characters turn out to be the actual protagonist. Decades old emotions return.
So glad I came back to the book after the stupefying movie. Something I read said “Thank god they restored that ballroom scene back to its original 45 minutes.” Um yeah.
Anyway, this book is something you need to soak up. Might update after visit to Palermo.

I'm sorry but finishing this, until I actually started finishing, was something I kept putting off I actually enjoyed the wrap up, but getting there a bit of a slog. Could have been three books!

Get over the mispronunciations
Revisado: 10-09-15
It was jarring but I got used to it. fascinating history of a time when everything changed but not everyone realized it was happening. I do like oral histories, this is the first one I've experienced as an audiobook. Mike Nichols comes across as a talented asshole. So so much film gossip. So so much history.
