Historia
1468. A young priest, Christopher Fairfax, arrives in a remote Exmoor village to conduct the funeral of his predecessor. The land around is strewn with ancient artifacts - coins, fragments of glass, human bones - which the old parson used to collect. Did his obsession with the past lead to his death? Fairfax becomes determined to discover the truth. Over the course of the next six days, everything he believes - about himself, his faith, and the history of his world - will be tested to destruction.

A Gripping Cautionary Tale
Revisado: 11-29-24
An engaging story, a poignant message and perfectly executed. A very good reader. Loved every bit of it, including the ending - what else could have they done? Every plot and subplot came to their logical conclusion.

Historia
Michael Crichton, creator of Jurassic Park, ER, Twister, and Westworld, had a passion project he’d been pursuing for years, ahead of his untimely passing in 2008. Knowing how special it was, his wife, Sherri Crichton, held back his notes and the partial manuscript until she found the right author to complete it: James Patterson, the world’s most popular storyteller.

Wanted to like it - but sadly it’s horrible
Revisado: 09-21-24
Wasn’t sure of myself at first - then reviewed other comments. Yep, it’s horrible. Bad contrived narration with predictable pauses, too many characters cut out of cardboard and glued together with cliches, MC would have been very sad to see this hackneyed job. Waste of a credit.

Millions of Amor Towles fans are in for a treat as he shares some of his shorter fiction: six stories based in New York City and a novella set in Golden Age Hollywood. The New York stories, most of which take place around the year 2000, consider the fateful consequences that can spring from brief encounters and the delicate mechanics of compromise that operate at the heart of modern marriages.

Historia
It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother’s coffin as the world watched in sorrow—and horror. As Princess Diana was laid to rest, billions wondered what Prince William and Prince Harry must be thinking and feeling—and how their lives would play out from that point on.

A Sad Story of an Unqualified Man for the Accident of His Birth
Revisado: 09-08-24
I was prejudiced from the beginning feeling that Prince Harry had betrayed his duty as a prince to his homeland. However, listening to this story, I could start to see his side of the story and appreciate the circumstances he had found himself. It is indeed a complex story overlayed with a lot of emotion. Having said this, you cannot but help thinking that this man believed from the beginning that there was a conspiracy of the entire world (as manifested in the press) first against his mother and then against him and eventually against his wife Meg. Well… not really. You could hear the smallest violin in the world playing in the background from page 1. It is also quite clear that there is quite a bit of an artistic license here taken by his ghost writer - a kid cannot possibly remember intricate details and the dates from his school. Clearly, mental illness plays a part here - but for a 30 year old guy sitting home, doing drugs and feeling sorry for himself with occasional trips in a private jet to Botswana is not an answer while millions of “normal” people got up every day to go to work and care for their kids. And Meghan… she really had no idea what she was getting into? Really, as in seriously? There is no global conspiracy and it is hard work to be a royal, and it was clearly not the job for a thick mate like Harry. Hope he can find peace in LA and hope his family will one day forgive him for making $$ on fanning the dirty Landry. Wonder if there is any difference between Harry making $$ exposing the sordid little facts about his immediate family vs the press making $$ by publishing candid photos of Harry. Actually, I think it is worse to sell your own family than make a living as a journalist. But a good product and an enjoyable entertainment. Happy to support his lifestyle and his kids by buying this book.

Historia
On November 6, 1860, Abraham Lincoln became the fluky victor in a tight race for president. The country was bitterly at odds; Southern extremists were moving ever closer to destroying the Union, with one state after another seceding and Lincoln powerless to stop them. Slavery fueled the conflict, but somehow the passions of North and South came to focus on a lonely federal fortress in Charleston Harbor: Fort Sumter.

Demystifying Narrative of the Start of the Civil War
Revisado: 08-06-24
This is an amazing insightful book full of details that really places you back in the era of antebellum and gives you a witness perspective how civilized people collectively plunged the country into the civil war. I kept wondering whether the war was unavoidable and how different things could have been if both parties were to come to a negotiated settlement. It also showed the horrors of slavery and that everybody understood that it was abnormal but the South just could not let the literally “human capital” disappear. The book clearly tells the story from the Union’s perspective BUT it is honest to provide a lot of Southern perspective and in fact most of the narrative is provided from the Southern sources. An excellent work.

An excellent narrative of a remarkable life
Revisado: 04-05-24
The book starts a bit dry in the beginning, but when you are done, you realize that it is the purpose of merging the form and the substance - it exemplifies the immensely hard and meticulous work undertaken by Lord Carnarvon in his journey to find and excavate the tomb of King Tut. Very well read by the countess. To use her favorite phrase - “how extraordinary”!

Historia
Though Anderson Cooper has always considered himself close to his mother, his intensely busy career as a journalist for CNN and CBS affords him little time to spend with her. After she suffers a brief but serious illness at the age of ninety-one, they resolve to change their relationship by beginning a yearlong conversation unlike any they have ever had before. The result is a correspondence of surprising honesty and depth in which they discuss their lives, the things that matter to them, and what they still want to learn about each other.

Historia
Digital platforms are changing the rules of competition in the global economy. Until recently, it took Fortune 500 companies an average of 20 years to reach billion-dollar market valuations. Successful platforms now reach that milestone in an average of four years. In The Platform Paradox, Wharton professor Mauro F. Guillén highlights a key incongruity in this new world. Most platforms considered to be successful have triumphed in only some, rather than all, parts of the world. There are very few truly global digital platforms.

As with the previous work by this author - essentially this is a collage of newspaper clippings and other authors’ observations without his own analysis. I feel cheated that I was suckered to read his book (again).

Historia
From 1783, when German immigrant John Jacob Astor first arrived in the United States, until 2009, when Brooke Astor’s son, Anthony Marshall, was convicted of defrauding his elderly mother, the Astor name occupied a unique place in American society. The family fortune, first made by a beaver trapping business that grew into an empire, was then amplified by holdings in Manhattan real estate. Over the ensuing generations, Astors ruled Gilded Age New York society and inserted themselves into political and cultural life, but also suffered the most famous loss on the Titanic.

A superb story!
Revisado: 12-28-23
After watching the Gilded Age, I wanted to learn more about the protagonists. This book is a great deal more than just an excellent account of the fortunes (and misfortunes) of Astor family. It is a history of New York and America and the people who built it. Highly recommend. Also, being narrated by Anderson Cooper himself makes this book even more entertaining.
