True crime with a good dose of humor and a whole lot of charm. Mike knows when it's appropriate to make a joke and when to be serious and it's always at the killer's expense instead of glorifying them. I love his attitude and upbeat storytelling.

Not a fan of the dynamic but it's really my own fault for not reading more about the book.

TW:

Stalking, kidnapping, SA, abuse, just all kinds of ickiness going on that I was not a fan of. Got the first book on sale super cheap and decided to just get both since they're shorter books. Mistake on my part.

I will say, the voice actors are really good. pleasant voices, great acting. 5 starts on that front.

Spoilers below!

He never revealed that he stealthed her by bribing the doc to not give her the birth control shot so he could knock her up. That's mega messed up and is a form of SA in my opinion. Also the reactions of Callista and Harper when the find out Hayden is a psychopathic murderer and stalker is so far out of reality it was laughable. But I understand NOW that this is a dark fantasy novel, so if that's what gets you going, have at it. It's very unrealistic but still is triggering if you're not in the right mindset.

I kind of wish everything had turned on Hayden at the end. Like she leaves him, he gets arrested and punished by the justice he loves so much. And Callista either gets an abortion or gives it up for adoption. Or she kills him for killing her father. And for sure gets a tattoo removal. Which was also messed up for him to do while she was drugged and injured.

I like the cats and the main character. The narrator was hard to listen to at first, but putting the whole thing on 1.2 speed made her sound normal. She's got burger king foot lettuce vibes a normal speed otherwise and it was a bit off putting.

What can I say about this spinoff that I didn't already say on the comment I left on the first series "Elemental Magic: The Complete Series".

First up, this one is about the best friend of the main character from the first series. Which at first I was rolling my eyes hard at, but the author explained the reason of why there were two besties that didn't know they were magical pretty well for the most part. Definite kudos for that.

The writing, as with the last one, was overly dramatic for the sake of drama rather than exposition it seems. And we had another issue with main character being instantly turned against which I'll get into in the spoiler section of my review later down. Just going to say, are they really friends if they turn on you that quick? So frustrating.

Another huge issue in the writing that I noticed with this spinoff was the reusing of lines. A few of them being:

"Well, what had happened was" (funny for the meme the first time not so funny the fourth or fifth.)

"Saw movement in my periphery" and "Saw something out of the corner of my eye" or variation of the two. (The amount of times these sentences were used was absolutely wild. I'm surprised these characters weren't half blind from eye strain with the amount of times they were said to be doing this. I'd have a migraine for sure.)

"...and the world exploded" and "...and the magic exploded" (these were used mostly at the end of chapters as a dramatic transition for a big use of magic that creates bright lights or something. It's not exactly for explosions, but I kept thinking there'd be body parts raining everywhere with the amount of times something "exploded".)

Same issue with narration as with the first series too. Hard to tell characters apart sometimes because the unique voices aren't used when it's their pov sometimes except for the dialogue parts. It gets a little confusing at times.

WARNING - mild spoilers below:

We're starting off hot in this one. What the absolute flock was up with Jackson being such an absolute ahole to Bettina right off the bat? This isn't Kindergarten in the 90s, boys don't have to be mean to girls they like anymore, I thought we were past that toxic thinking. So freaking annoying. Ugh!!! If you're going to make an enemies to lovers, make it a good reason instead of "How dare she be hot and distract me like this!? I'm going to make her life hell because I'm emotionally stunted, tiny weenie boy!! It's all her fault because women bad!" And the whole time Bettina is just as dumb "He's so mean, but so hot! I'm so angry until I look at him and get wet." Let's just perpetuate toxic and abusive relationships because they might work out later! He might not abuse you down the road when he's done being stressed! (big sarcasm right there).

Bettina's friends turn on her and think she's a murderer in no time. Not only that, but they don't even let her defend herself. They instantly magic cuff her and magic tape her mouth closed and throw her in a dungeon. Don't even talk to her about it until Tegan shows up days and takes the tape off herself. Great reunion btw (not sarcasm I actually liked that Tegan came through and kicked ass for her bestie.)
I will admit, not all of her friends instantly abandoned her. One stood by her and even smuggled stuff to her, but that's just one friend. Where were the rest of those jerks? I'm even mad at the ones that were on the fence about her. Not with her, then against her. They certainly didn't help.

The supposed twists for the books were obvious from miles away. The dancing around the truth and characters seemingly going out of their way to be oblivious of it was just exhausting. Even worse, once stuff gets revealed, Tegan and sometimes Bently will be like, "Oh yeah, we knew, just didn't tell you because we had a really good reason. What's the reason? Well, I'm sure there was a good one, but only the goddess or dead people know I guess and we'll never question them or ask about it. K?"

Ruth should be shamed for her baby names, seriously.

I'm sure there's more, but I think I've said too much already.

Interesting Concept, Iffy Execution

The concept of thus series is actually really interesting and pretty darn cool in my opinion. BUT, also my opinion, the writing and plot line was pretty rough. Definitely not a bad read and something I would have adored in middle school, but being out of school, the constant drama just seemed messy and unnecessary. Drama is good a lot of times but it has to be done well. In this instance, there seemed to be drama just for the sake of it and to create weird cliffhangers to give people a reason to go to the next book.

Not sure if it was the narrator or the the director that dropped the ball on the narrations.. Kept getting mixed up what character they were on because the accents or different voices for the characters weren't used all the time. The dialog parts were unique enough, but the internal dialogue was all the same baseline narration. If I put the book on pause and came back later, I wasn't sure what character it was until someone addressed the character again.

WARNING - semi spoilers below:

The whole "no dating" thing for the twins was just frustrating which I guess is what the author was going for, but the reasoning was idiotic. The previous twins were evil and maybe went evil because one of them liked some dude but he betrayed her or something so she did dark magic? Something like that, and it turned out not to be that issue at all, but let's put consequences on the new twins, "just cause they might get boyfriends and be evil." If you tell ANY teen they're forbidden to date, then they're going to be evil little jerks anyways and go behind your back. You're just making worse.

Also, the constant lies and deceit going on between all parties makes this coven seem like they aren't a real team at all. The adults literally have no mind of their own apparently they just blindly followed rules about the twins from the 1600s and because of that, they split up a whole family for over a decade and raised kids apart from their siblings. It was nonsensical and unnecessary. Even if it was because they wanted to hide their magic, they could have still done that and still been a family together.

This next issue was the biggest ick in this collection for me. The "betrayal" of Tegan. Her soul mate believed she was evil so fast it was ridiculous. She asked him to trust her, and when she got sketchy, he was like "nope, heart broken, she's evil. but also, let's bang. I'm still sad though." THEN he throws a hissy fit and is so pissed at her when he finds out she was faking it to save a coven mate. Boy, you better sit down and shut your mouth. If I had been friends with that kid, I'd have slapped the stupid out of him.

That being said, it wasn't a horrible series to go through, I just recommend breaks so you don't get too irritated about it.

The premise is cool, but the characters could use some more fleshing out. Especially Kian, being "brooding and mysterious" is so overplayed and is just a cop out for making any dimension what so ever for any character. The other two boys are a little better because they actually talk to the main character enough to get some depth but their personalities are also pretty common. You have shy, virgin nerd, and joking, extroverted man-ho.

Then you have Amora. She an over the top strong female lead. Hides her emotions, can't be seen as weak ever, impatient to the point of rudeness just cause "life hurt her but no one can know". She'd be 1D if us as the readers weren't in her head most of the time.

Last but not least, this book feels like it was written by a horny housewife that gets no orgasms from her partner, so she writes as many sex scenes as she can fit. I swear if I were reading this book physically, I'd be surprised if there were two pages side by side without sex in it. Even when Amora isn't with the guys, she constantly has sex dreams about them so you never get a freaking break from it.

You hurt? Time to bang! I'm sad... Time to bang! Are you angry? Time to bang!

I'm sorry, but not everything is solved with sex... unless you're in this universe I guess. Not much going on between all the humping. When there is something important, they have a fight and either have angry sex, sad sex, or make up sex. There's just weiners flying at this poor girl every time she turns around or bends over or whatever.

The narrorators are alright. Someone needs to get the masculine narrator a throat lozenge though, sounds like he blew his voice out before starting this book.

Getting this out of the way but RC Bray is a great narrator there's no way he'll not get 5 stars from me. As for the book...

At first I was confused, then felt betrayed, then angry. And finally, amazement and adoration.

I thought the previous books I listened too were just tantamount to a soap opera episode where everything was just the dream of a (practically) comatose patient. I was PISSED to say the least. I went through all those books, got invested in the characters and story only to find out they were just simulations that our protag lived through. Like, I get it, it would kind of help us understand the shit he went through a little, but I still did not like the fact that the characters that I grew fond of and got my heart hurt over weren't real (listen, I know that sounds nuts because they're fiction and they already don't exist, but they like DOUBLE didn't exist and I was very upset. Until JR was like, "yeah, they were Sims, but now they're real because space donut went funky." There's more context of course, but don't want to be too spoilery. Anyways, turned out pretty badass. thanks JR & Bray

I like this author. Has some parallels to her vampire detective main characters but the setting is different. Grouchy detective that falls for a weird guy that keeps butting into police work, bot using underhanded yet funny ways to get assigned to said grouchy detective. Still funny and enjoyable.

Has the standard zombie apocalypse stuff. Zombie hazards and raiders that treat women like sex dolls. But what I really liked about this one was the character Mike. Finally a character that knows the world has gone to the dogs and doesn't whimper and cry about getting stuff done. He had a small adjustment period in the beginning, but he bucked up and knew that's how it was from then on. And I like that he's fleshed out well as a character he's not all cold and badass, and it shows his struggles and vulnerability. The other characters are likable in their own ways. Some are still stuck on morality and ideals that don't work anymore, but they're not terrible. I am disappointed that one character had an addiction, but instead of doing anything in story about it, it cuts to the next book and briefly mentions they kicked the habit in a few weeks. Kind of makes bringing it up in the first place a moot point. But who knows, there's more books in the series and it might come back again.

This series isn't ground breaking, or particularly relatable. By that I mean that I don't particularly care about any character, but I still enjoy the setting and action.
