Great story, great reader
Revisado: 11-15-24
Love everything to do with this series though there are a few points in the first few books that highlight a need for a feature that audible doesn't have, this is not a critique on the book mind you but a way to report when an audio book has an obvious misread/typo in it would be nice, as this one does indeed have one, late on in the book when Jason is getting some new powers the reader gets the name of one of the powers wrong at one point, mixing it up with another one, they describe the information past that properly but still...
its not too bad and it only happens the once but not being able to get it fixed after having listen'd to this book like 10 times it frustrates me every time i hear it.

show don't tell
Revisado: 08-03-24
this story is sadly a very good example of 'why' that is a rule of writing, the entire story only covers '3' days of in world time for the characters, maybe less then that, yeah that's right in 14 hours plus of reading, only THREE in world days pass, the large part of this is due to the author taking 'way' to darn long describing EVERY LITTLE THING
i love the concepts involved in this but the writer needs to take a few steps back and maybe think about what needs to be said and what doesn't need to, there are several points in the story even where the same point or bit of information is repeated, verbatim, one or two even get repeated three times
the shere amount of wasted space on irelavent details is mind boggling, and the 'tangent' chapters and 'foot note' sections that go off on random details that im sure the author thought were hilarious but honestly were just cringy to annoying
the reader does an amazing job, the overall experience is good enough to warent a read (if you can get it on sale or buy it with a free monthly credit) but unless the author breaks that habit of over explaining things or gets a realllly good editor to reign them in i don't recommend any future books in this series

great ...that ending stinger though
Revisado: 08-01-24
great as ever left most of it the characters were interesting as usual and the story development was nice, power scaling is getting a little bit wiggy but we expected that with how diamond rankers and gold rankers were portrayed in the earlier books knowing we're getting closer to that means that things are about to go off the rails, but honestly I'm kind of looking forward to that and seeing how far it can be taken... that ending though honestly I'm not sure whether I hope that was a joke or if that's legit no spoilers though you have to listen to find out what I'm talking about.

bullet points
interesting characters and situations overall
cool setting and interesting world and world building
the reader does a good job
nit picks
bit power fantasyish, MC is a bit of a gary stu at times (which is a bit of the point, he even gets made fun of in world for it)
author has a bit of an issue with chosing poor moments to end chapters often having one chapter end in the middle of a conversation and having a single combat encounter span thru 3~5 chapters with chapters ending mid action and picking up right where the previous chapter left off

another great entry.
Revisado: 01-13-24
I honestly don't know what all the people complaining in the comments and reviews are gripping about this was just another wonderful entry in this series yes it gets a little bit predictable towards the end but that I think is more because I've been listening or reading this particular tale for almost 3 years now I've come to know the characters and how they think and act so thus when they're put in a particular situation I can easily guess the choices they're going to make this does not make it badly written this actually means it's good it's consistent the characters don't pull 180 personality heel turns out of their ass just to serve the plot unlike some stories do so yeah it's fun, my only real Wonder is how far is Sugarland going to take us down Jason's story will he tell us how it goes all the way to Jason taking his place among the great astral beings cuz let's face it at the rate he's going that's where the logical conclusion lies, or will the tail end when his time on palomestus is over, will his exploits in the larger universe be left to our imaginations time will tell sorry for the poor spelling on some of that I'm using speech to text on a cell phone

Felix's life on Earth had become a series of dead-end jobs, ruined relationships, and rotating apartments smaller than most postage stamps. By all accounts, even his own, he was a coward. Too afraid to move forward, to take risks. Yet when given the chance to choose between risking his life or walking away from a deadly encounter, he didn't hesitate. Moments before his untimely demise, Felix was snatched from earth and thrust into a magical world known only as "The Continent". Good story, ripped off mechanics
Revisado: 08-01-22
Anyone listening to this that is a fan of lit rpgs is very quickly going to notice something familiar...especially if you've read or listens to the 'he who fights with monsters' series as the system there, and the system here have some striking similarities, i suspect that there are aspects of this in just about all lit rpgs but this is particularly egregious in them
That said imitation is the sincerest from of flattery and whats more thats how genre's are built, each work slowly builds on what came before, things that work are carried over things that don't are left behind
that said this is 'not' as good as he who fights with monsters but its more then good enough, the reading is especially good however, this reader has experience with reading other lit rpgs and is quite good at it, even providing sound effects now and then so thats nice, so yeah if your looking for something to enjoy while waiting for the next episodes of other series to come out you could do far far worse then this one.

Historia
The ancient magic of wizards was anything but dark. It was the enlightenment that lifted humanity from the squalor of superstition, and the worship of fell spirits and capricious gods, but those days are gone. The shining glory of the sorcerers burned away the subtlety of wisdom, replacing it with easy power, held only in the hands of the elite - a new age built upon the elemental supremacy of aristocrats and the ignorance of the masses.

An interesting story with some issues
Revisado: 12-17-21
I wont beat around the bush with this one just gonna give the bullet points
pros
--Interesting cast of characters
--well built world and lore with a nice hard magic system
--compelling overall narrative
cons
--the main character carries the idiot ball for most of the story, not learning from his mistakes and frequently making the exact same ones
--plot convenience drips from some of the later chapters.
--the pacing moves sporadically, sometimes barely giving you a second to breath, other times a single brief event can drag on thru an entire chapter, sometimes several.

Great story overall, fumbles at the end.
Revisado: 12-10-21
This series in general really had my interest from start till now, the characters are amazing the setting is interesting and well thought out, the story while nothing new is told in a fun way and the readers help it a great deal, an amazing tale of love, hardships, adventure and mystery
That said the ending, which i wont spoil but to say its such a cliche cliffhanger sequel hook that it feels like the entire story slammed into a 50 foot wall, all my interest died within the space of a few lines delivered right at the end...
others may not mind it as much but for me it was a complete and total deal-breaker
