I Truly Enjoyed This!
Revisado: 08-30-20
I love the work of Mervyn Peake! Gormenghast has always been my home away from home in the imaginary sense, It and the Castle of Lord Juss in Eddison's The Worm Ouroboros. The stories and poems contained herein as the smallest sample...the merest soupcon of this genius' wide ranging work and the readings are by his sons. You can't get closer to having the Master tell you his tales and sing you his songs than THAT!!!

Historia
Three of the most popular and sought after apocryphal books are now presented in a single volume. The Book of Enoch is quoted by Jude, cited by Peter, and read by the apostles, Enoch (1 Enoch) informs our ideas of angels and demons. The book describes the fall of a group of angels called the Watchers, who took the daughters of men as wives and fathered the Nephilim (Genesis 6: 1-2). Enoch goes on to record amazing visions of heaven and the workings thereof. Enoch is an ancient Jewish religious work, traditionally ascribed to Enoch, the great-grandfather of Noah.

The Late Sir Christopher Lee Reminds Us
Revisado: 10-06-19
What it is like to listen to a great story told by a great storyteller. M. R,. James could write Ghost Stories the way Lord Dunsany could write Fantasy. Both could take words and fashion them into stories that are glittering gems of prose. And these are four of James' Best. And Sir Christopher is the best narrator they could have gotten. Once his voice starts in you KNOW you're in for a blood chillingly ghoulishly good time.

Simply a Great Story!
Revisado: 11-30-18
And one that inspired some scenes in Colin Wilson's modern vampire novel called LIFE FORCE (in some editions) and THE SPACE VAMPIRES originally. M. R. James Legacy is continuing well into the 20th and 21st Centuries and David Collings' performance as the famous Don of Midnight Shivers is, as is that of the late Sir Christopher Lee on television, to be treasured by all Connoisseurs of Chills.

Fine Rendition of a Classic Tale of Terror!
Revisado: 11-18-18
This classic Machen Tale which was the main inspiration for the Serpent Men of Valusia in Robert E, Howard's tales of King Kull (and some of his Lovecraftian Horror stories as well) receives a surprisingly good reading by Mr. Herriot. Either he's getting better as he goes on. or the recording was edited better, or he just really liked the story, or a combination of all three but in this performance the accent is softened, the feel of the narrator's being actually involved with the events he is relating are, by turns, both fascinating and occasionally even heighten the sense of the outré and horrifying that Mr. Machen knew so well how to evoke. Let's call it 4 and a half stars out of five!

When Ms Lally walked out into the cold night devoid of hope, hungry and penniless, she expected to find a quiet place to lie down and die. What she found was a benefactor, an academic with a mysterious passion and secret knowledge of a hidden world beyond the realms of known science. The Novel of the Black Seal is cited as one of the primary influences on H. P. Lovecraft and his tales.

Mr. Herriot Struggles a Bit
Revisado: 11-15-18
Mr. Herriot (not the Vet, the Narrator) has some problems with this one. The first one being that he is an Australian Narrator trying to read a Welsh author. Now, he can't help being Australian, poor chap, but the accent is going to be off and he doesn't do dialect well. Or at all, actually. So characters all sound the same (and Australian) in a story written, as I said, by a Welshman and set (primarily) in London and Wales. Also, his performance contains what should have been out-takes. H mispronounces words and place names and inverts the word order a couple of times. The story is one of the classics of horror and well worth your time. If you've never read or heard it (and, especially have never read the novel of which it forms one chapter...THE THREE IMPOSTERS...then you have some real chills ahead in the IMPLICATIONS of this story which, together with his story THE SHINING PYRAMID will have you wondering about the Welsh Countryside a LOT 😵 Again, Mr. Herriot stumbled a bit on this one but if you can ignore that (as we are used to ignoring typos in print media for the sake of a good yarn) then you can still enjoy Mr., Machen's tale of Terror.

The music and sound effects in this audio version are eerily atmospheric, and the narration by actor Tim Dalgleish brings Bram Stoker's chilling tale vibrantly back to life. This deleted first chapter of the world-famous novel Dracula - not published until two years after Bram Stoker's death - has been unearthed and dusted off and is now as fresh as any corpse could possibly be!

Not Dracula But...Not Bad, Either.
Revisado: 05-01-18
Tim Dalgleish presents a very well read version of this famous (in certain circles, anyway) missing chapter pf Bram Stoker's most famous novel DRACULA. Of course, other of his tales have been filmed which makes their names, if not the books themselves, familiar to fans of supernatural fiction. The Lair of the White Worm which starred Hugh Grant and Peter Capaldi and The Jewel of the Seven Stars (Stoker's tale about a wicked Egyptian Witch-Queen's plans for resurrection has been filmed half a dozen times at least...the one with Charlton Heston and a very young Stephanie Zimbalist being, perhaps, the best known today). At any rate Dracula's Guest helped inspire a few other vampire stories J. Sheridan Le Fanu's (despite his French name a fellow Irishman to Stoker) CARMILLA being the best known of these and both drawing on the real-life story of Countess Elizabet Bathory (herself a cousin to Vlad the Impaler) after whom the abattoir (slaughterhouse) got its name. It means, literally, "blood-bath" and the Countess used to bathe in the blood of young virgins in order to retain her youth. Good version, Good narration, great mood-setting music. Worth twice what they are charging for it.
