for being so damned stupid. I found myself alternately rooting for and against her throughout the book. At the end, I couldn't be mad at her fate, although the "twist" was contrived and lame.

What didn't I hate about story? I have rarely been left feeling so frustrated/irritated/annoyed by characters. Jenny was forgiving and naive to a fault, and her horrible son and daughter! I was appalled at how they treated and spoke to her. She did not once correct or hold them accountable for their words/choices/actions. What son, let alone a teen son, speaks to his mother that way, and what type of mother allows it?! it's a huge "hell no" for me. The issue between Ed & Theo was never explained or resolved, or maybe I was just checked out at that point. A huge waste of time.

Such a great story and the narration was PHENOMENAL! I related to Ellie and especially to the the struggles of Sarah as the single professional working mother of a disabled child. Her story resonated with me and brought me to tears more than once. Living through the pain, isolation, judgement, self-doubt, loneliness, uncertainty... her story and her desire to fight for others is my story. very well done.

I was so disappointed by how this turned out. Jane, Jane, Jane...sociopath indeed. She proved to be a pathetic lap dog, and Thalia? once again, bad behavior rewarded, not to mention framed with racist undertones. No thanks.

I highly recommend this book. Granted the pace is a bit slow at times, but the payoff is worth it. This novel succeeds where so many others that deal in moral dilemmas fail; it explores all of the relevant what ifs. The narrator's pace became a bit slow and tedious, but overall it was a great listen.

So convoluted and preposterous. I'm kicking myself for returning to it after initially stopping after the first few dreadful chapters. Mindless characters with mindless motives. The setting seemed more suited to Victorian England than the 1980's. If you don't mind a huge waste of time and money, then add this to your list.

This was torturous! so many plot holes, and the twist at the end? I won't even go there. Where did this story take place, Sodom and Gomorrah? So many self-absorbed, clueless individuals, and teachers from hell! Perhaps it wouldn't have been so bad had I read it in print, but the narration was disturbing. The Eve character sounded like a phone sex operator the entire way through, and the teenager sounded like a whiny perpetual victim. I want DOUBLE my money back!

I was intrigued by the premise of this book, but there was a huge build up for very little pay off. Actually, no pay off. I feel deflated, defeated, betrayed, well, you get the point.

I really appreciated the narration, It was obvious to me from the beginning that Dawn was on the Autism spectrum given her manner of speaking and her fixation on monochromatic foods & certain objects ( turtles), despite it never being stated. The fact that her coworkers could be so outright dismissive, rude and cruel for no other reason than here was a woman who was " weird " had me rooting for her the entire time, regardless of her actions. I completely empathized with her and I saw through Natalie's machinations. I tend not to enjoy endings when the villain doesn't receive his/her comeuppance, and based on others' reviews it is clear why bully culture is alive and well in today's society. The actual villain in this story, the starting point for all of the ensuing madness, is allowed to walk off into the sunset unscathed without having ever had to account for their actions. That's too much like real life for me. I read to escape real life, not to be reminded of it.

I didn't understand the title or what it referred to, let's start there. There was so much I couldn't get on board with in this novel, despite my efforts to remain open-minded and engaged.

First of all I found the narrator to be annoying and over the top. In the beginning she kept switching up the pronunciation of Alix's name; at times she was "A-licks", other times "A-leeks". The stereotypical way she voiced Emira and her friends was cringeworthy, not to mention the way little Briar sounded. Based on the narration I couldn't tell how old the child was supposed to be. Two? Four? Nine with a severe intellectual disability? Perhaps had I read it rather than listened to it that would've resolved some ( not all) of the issues I had with this book.

Emira was written as mostly harmless and fairly likable, but the biggest problem I had with her was the fact that she seemingly had no ambition, no motivation to improve herself. She was perfectly ok with being " just ok". As the story progressed, she remained, well, an aimless loser who had the gall to question others' motivation/intentions.

Alix was written as very one-dimensional, with a stereotypical set of high-achieving friends. The fact that she remained stuck in the past and emotionally stunted was frankly no surprise. The venom with which she went after Kelly and ferocity with which she inserted herself into his and Emira's relationship was pathological. She was petty, spoiled, manipulative, and completely lacked the ability to admit that she was wrong. I think the author missed an opportunity to explore the relationship between Alix and Briar. Alix clearly favored her infant daughter, and Briar had an awareness that her mom didn't like or appreciate her. This was an area in which Emira was able to shine, and it would have been nice to have this relationship explored.

I very much disliked the assumptions that were made by many of the characters. This IMHO was probably my biggest issue with this book. The fact that none of them were challenged, resolved, or even discussed was off-putting. The assumption that Emira was committing a crime, the assumption that Kelly had given out his gf's address, the assumption that Kelly was fetishizing Black women based on his dating "history". The assumption that he leaked the video, the assumption that Alix and her friend were " the best to ever happen" to Emira. My head was spinning from the ping-ponging assumptions, even when facts to the contrary were presented. I did not like the fact Emira's friends didn't seem to encourage her to do better for herself, or that Kelly was never vindicated. I didn't like how Emira handled the situation at the interview, once she learned what Alix had done. what was the point in asking her friend to act a fool during a televised news segment, trotting out every negative stereotypical ghetto trope? And who would agree to do something like that? What cause did it advance? it speaks to Emira's poor problem solving skills and immaturity, and was one of the reasons I couldn't fully get on the Emira love train. I thought the care & concern she showed towards Briar was sincere and genuine until the point at which she chose to make her exit. That showed a complete lack of concern for a child she supposedly loved. I'm really surprised by all of the positive reviews and accolades this book has received. It makes me sad to know that the bar has been set so low when it comes to plot and character development.
